EGGGCELLENT... . I took a bunch of quick pics of the chickens a while back and this one caught my eye. This guy looks possessed!!! I lost sleep that night because I kept thinking he was gonna get me. Some glimpses of the journey of a cured egg yolk. One of the most unique umami flavors I have ever experienced. They are very simple to cure and well worth the effort! 5 days buried in a 50/50 mixture of salt and sugar, the rinsed and dried for 2 hours in a 150° oven. That's it! Grate them on salads, pastas, anything you would grate a hard cheese on. Its richness is impressive and very unique... live bold! #curedeggyolk #chefslife #knowyourfarmer #knowyourfood #eatlocal #havefun #learneveryday #r2 #roamingradish

Looking for a crazy (crazy goooood!) veggie recipe to serve this Christmas?? 😀🎅🎄 Omg, this!! 😍😍💕💕 - I'm sure you can find similar things on the interweb, but I just winged it. - All the pictured veggies: Parsnip Carrots Golden beet Brussels sprouts Chards & Rutabaga (only 1/3 of the rutabaga though, they're big & it was a big parsnip already haha) - While you're cutting up your veg, have the oven preheating to 280F (random, I know, I wanted "low-ish"). - I then took 3tbsp Coconut oil 2tbsp Sunflower oil Put them in a bowl with a good sprinkling of Cumin Garam Masala Cinnamon Nutmeg Coriander Paprika & Ginger ...what's "a good sprinkling of each" mean? Not quite a tsp of each I suppose? Or roundabout, +/-? I just give a good few shakes from my shakers 😋 It's cooking, it's Your meal, it's what you like, have Fun, play with it! 😋😁💕 - Anyways, mix the oils & spices for a dressing of sorts. Put your veggies all in one bowl if you haven't yet. Throw in some sunflower seeds 🌻, walnuts & cranberries 💕 Smother the veggies with your lovely oil creation - After I mixed mine up, I took it to the bf, "Smell this. It smells like sex!" *smells* "Wow! That smells Amazing! I wouldn't say like sex, but Really good!" "Hah, I know. That'd be gross if it smelt like that." - Seriously though, #winning ! - Mix it. Throw it in an oven safe cooking container. & let it cook for an hour.. a bit more mightn't hurt too (or a bit less depending your veggie portion & heat setting). - Either serve right away orrrr this is actually for the Lapidary(/Rock) Club Christmas party tomorrow sooooo yeah, letting it sit a day, the spicey oilyness has more time to sink into & flavour the veggies. - Mmmmmm!!! 😍😍💕💕 - #parsnips #rutabaga #goldenbeets #coconutoil #yellowchard #pinkchard #redchard #swisschard #deckgarden #growagarden #growSomething #knowyourfood #yardtotable #greeneating #supportlocalfarmers #SwanLakeNursery #recipes #Christmasrecipes #Christmascooking #growfoodnotlawns #gyo #saynoGMO #urbanfarming #garden #gardening #womenwhofarm #nature #foodismedicine #LOVE

Herb crusted prime rib. One of my go to methods is a combination of Cypress white flake sea salt, black peppercorns and fresh rosemary. Grind them down (a small coffee grinder will do the job just fine) and liberally coat your roast the night before you will be cooking it and refrigerate it uncovered. Roast slow and low (225° is ideal if you have the time) until the desired temp (I pull mine at 125°), let sit for an hour, then roast at 425° until desired crust is achieved (usually 5-8 minutes in a commercial convection oven) Rest for 15 minutes before serving... then sit back and accept the accolades! #primerib #slowandlow #takethetime #chefslife #knowyourfarmer #knowyourfood #whidbeyislandgrown #eatlocal #r2 #roamingradish

Although we often associate farmers’ markets with warm weather temps, there are plenty of cold-weather crops at the farmers’ market to inspire fall and winter cooking, and you’ll have so much fun stocking up on hearty veggies for a cozy evening in the kitchen. Leafy greens are actually in season during the winter, along with cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage. Onions are an underrated workhorse. And don’t forget the Winter Squash selection! In the winter fruit selection, there is a bevy of personal favorites including, persimmons, pears, and pomegranates. Not to be missed is the citrus family, oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, and kumquats the cheeriest of the cold weather crops. #optoutside #getoutgetshopping #coolweather #coolproduce #marketdaysarethebestdays #smfms

After finishing reading “The Vegetarian’s Guide to Eating Meat” by @marisqwksa this week, I was re-inspired to find more local food. Lo and behold, I stumbled upon @hildebrand_farms_dairy at a natural grocery store today. They also make butter, but the store was out currently. This creamline, close-to-raw milk comes from a dairy in Western Kansas, just 100 miles from me. Standing in the dairy case today, holding this glass (!) bottle, I felt a rush, and I remembered how much I loved farmers markets when I lived in Oklahoma. I can’t wait to find a market here in Central Kansas, and I plan on taking my girls on a little road trip next summer to visit the Hildebrand Farm. 🥛 #HildebrandDairy #milk #grassfed #localfood #KnowYourFood #creamline #nonhomogenized #farmersmarket #Kansas #glassbottle #bottledeposit

🤤Mmmmm Mayo...there’s something about that delicious, creamy texture that makes everything better! AMIRITE?⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The classic mayo we all know and love is really high in calories, with a total of 90 and 10 grams of fat per tablespoon. If you want to add a thick and creamy characteristic to your meals, and you do not want to add the extra calories to your diet, you should try these equally awesome alternatives instead.⠀ ⠀ 1. 🧀Cottage cheese. Salty and creamy flavor that's similar to mayo. This yummy sub is low in calorie, high in protein, and has no cholesterol. It works especially well in tuna and pasta salads as well as dips.⠀ ⠀ 2. 🥑Avocado: Creamy and dense, like mayo. You can smear them on sandwiches, and save 77 calories, 9g fat, and 89mg sodium per tablespoon. Plus, you get an extra gram of fiber. ⠀ ⠀ 3. Greek Yogurt: Tangy like mayo, similar texture, too. You can use this substitute in basically any recipe, especially in dips and salad dressings, and it will save you 90 calories, 11g fat, and 85mg sodium per tablespoon...PLUS, you'll add a gram of protein, too.⠀ ⠀ 4. Pesto: Oil-based, just like mayo, but with waaaaaay more flavor, this delicious sub will help you save 25 calories, and 4g fat per tablespoon. Add it to your favorite whole wheat pasta, or your grilled chicken for a delicious meal!⠀ ⠀ 5. 🥜Nut butter. Ok, we know what you’re thinking…not the most common thing to substitute mayo with, but you can use this in so many ways! Especially in sandwiches… #YUM ! It will help you save 2g fat and add 3-4g protein per tablespoon. ⠀ ⠀ 6. Hummus: Nutty and fluffy. Thick, like mayo. You can use it for sandwiches or thickening some of your recipes or even your tuna salad! Using hummus will save 65 calories, 8.5g fat, and 25mg sodium per tablespoon. ⠀ ⠀ -----⠀ ⠀ 📷 by @MealPrepOnfleek #GetFit2StayHealthy #healthytips #knowyourfood #healthyandhappy #healthyhabits #healthmatters #eatinghealthy #consistencyiskey #healthmatters #nutritiontips #eatwellfeelwell #eatingforhealth #fatlossjourney #fatlosstips #HealthyLiving #healthycooking #getfitnowaskmehow ❤️ @CoachGinnyToll

That rose bush down the road yielded two quarts of rosehips in probably no more than fifteen minutes of picking. As you can see in the first picture, these rose hips have been out for a while and have started to dry a bit. This freezing and drying sweetens the flesh and gives it a texture like a date. The crinkly older rose hips are easier to pick, easier to clean the woody bits from, and tastier--focus on those. . . . . . #hookriflespade #forager #foraging #forage #forageforfood #backyardforager #woodstotable #foresttotable #eatwild #nature #liveoutdoors #wildfood #feedyourself #outdoorsman #wildedibles #eatlocal #foragedfood #woodsman #builtforthewild #publiclands #fieldtotable #knowyourfood #publiclandowner #urbanforaging #urbanforager #rosehips #rosehipjelly #rosehip #wildfoodcookery #foragedfood

Ever wonder why people describe mushrooms as "meaty"? It's not just the texture. #Mushrooms contain the same naturally occurring glutamates found in meat which impart a savory flavor known as "umami".

I love eating good food. I’ve gotten pickier and pickier with what I put in my body. So last night I tried Halo top ice cream...I was curious after hearing people talk about it. All I could think was what in the hell is this?! It definitely does not taste like ice cream. Then I looked at the ingredient list...I’m not sure I will ever eat it again. I know people eat it because there’s not many calories, but are the fewer calories really worth it?? I’d rather eat a few more calories of real ice cream...the kind where I know what each ingredient is, and feel actual satisfaction and enjoyment while eating it than just eat the fewer calories. So while the number calories matters when it comes to weight loss/gain, it also matters what we’re consuming. Put real food in and take the time to enjoy each bite. #eatrealfood #knowyourfood #healthymom #happymom #fitmom #momswholift #womenwholift

Let’s talk persimmons! 😋 (*swipe to see a nutritional comparison to an apple*) . I’m sure some of you are like “what the heck is a persimmon?!” right about now. Let me break it off for you because a persimmon is one of my favorite fall/winter fruits. . Persimmons are Japan’s national fruit, but said to have originated in China. Persimmons are now gaining popularity globally and are sold across the U.S., grown predominantly in California. . Curious about the taste? To me, it tastes like an apple made love to a plum and gave birth to this beautiful creation called a persimmon. . Now sure how to eat it? Here are 6 different ways to incorporate persimmons into your nutrition routine. Personally, I like to eat them like I would an apple. (Taste best when somewhere between firm & soft but not too soft) . Add to smoothies - example: 1 persimmon + 1/2 banana + vanilla protein + water & ice . Cook w/ coconut oil - In a pan add coconut oil. Add the peeled persimmons and cinnamon. Sauté for a few minutes. . Add to overnight oats - example: 1/2 cup oats + 1 tbsp maple syrup + almond milk + 1 persimmon + shredded coconut . Enjoy with Greek yogurt - example: Greek yogurt + Stevia + pecans + cinnamon + 1 persimmon. . Top on rice cake - example: rice cake + almond butter + persimmon slices. . Eat like an apple 🙂 📷 by @ naturesherbalist #GetFit2StayHealthy #healthytips #knowyourfood #healthyandhappy #healthyhabits #healthmatters #eatinghealthy #consistencyiskey #healthmatters #nutritiontips #eatwellfeelwell #eatingforhealth #fatlossjourney #fatlosstips #HealthyLiving #healthycooking #getfitnowaskmehow ❤️ @CoachGinnyToll

Harvest! We actually go ripe #pomegranates from our garden yesterday... my wife and I have been working on getting a decent piece of fruit out of that garden for 3 years. #persistenceoverresistance wins every time. 🍊🍊 Why pomegranate? Well aside from the fact that I was told it grows like a weed and I’d have a very tough time killing it with my lack of gardening skills... this fruit is high in antioxidants, helps with digestion, is anti-inflammatory, promotes healthy heart function, is a good source of vitamin C and also tastes great as a topping on salads, oatmeal, in a smoothie, and so forth. 🍊🍊 Why do you eat what you eat? I think all too often we just grab and go without being truly mindful of ‘why’. Just doing a quick google search on a particular food can tell you loads about what it’s doing for you once you eat it. Start small and grow from there to the nutritious lifestyle you want to lead. 🍊🍊 See link in bio to subscribe to my monthly newsletter!!Photo credit @sara_np_30
