Sanderling | Bécasseau sanderling | Calidris alba: I found a small flock of these birds last weekend, as I was conducting the BC Coastal Waterbird Survey for Bird Studies Canada on Iona Island. I got a few good photos of these birds, but I like this image in particular because the bird seems to be jumping for joy. Now it seems to only have one leg in this photo, but it actually tucked in its other foot, probably to conserve some heat. The waves in the background are actually ice patches that formed on our patch of the Pacific.
Taken at Iona Beach Regional Park in Richmond (British Columbia), Canada, on February 10, 2019 with a handheld Nikon D5200 and AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR (ISO 560 | 500 mm | 0 ev | f/5.6 | 1/1000), cropped - 70% of original. Wild, as shot; not baited, called in or set up.
