How do you bring up meaningful conversations with your kids? How do you begin the discussion on loving those that are different than us, racism, homelessness, etc?
Our kids can tune us out when we lecture, so why not use something they love...movies.
We've started a tradition of watching a couple of movies a month that tackle tough topics and use them as a springboard to discuss important topics.
We watched these two and a handful of others. While we watch, my husband and I will point out things that we want our kids to notice. We'll also ask questions like "Why do you think that boy is sad?" to get them thinking about what they are watching. After the movie, we make sure to talk about what we learned, then we bring it up throughout the week.
If our kids are going to be strong-willed, let's teach them what to use that will for. Adding value to the world, speaking up for those that don't have a voice, defending the weak, loving the outcast, changing the world.
What other movies would you suggest? I'm always looking for more. -
