Happy FriYAY!!! It is a beautiful morning in our community!! 😍☀️☀️ We have a good selection of hive tools in the store. A frame grip is one tool we cannot do without. It is great for removing frames out of boxes during inspection. It easily slides between frames, reduces the risk of stings, and dropping the frames. Stop by and get yours today. OPEN until 5:00 P.M. . . . #beekeeping #beekeeper #honeybees #beehive #hiveinspections #framegrip #savethebees #agriculture #beeshop #shopsmall #smallbusiness #virginia #hillsville #pollinators #saveourpollinators #keepbees

When I was younger I was fascinated by bees, though I knew very little of their complexities. When my wife and I first started dating in 2012 I found out my (now) father-in-law was a beekeeper. He helped me get started by giving me a swarm he had caught in a deep super. I kept bees myself until 2017. During those 5 years I was stung twice, and both times had very allergic reactions that sent me to the hospital even after dispatching the epi pen on myself. I continued keeping bees, bought a full body suit, and began taking allergy shots. Take it from me, beekeeping is addictive. The sound, the smell when you crack open the inner cover revealing thousands of individuals working as one body. Each with their own job. As fun as keeping bees is, it is a lot of work and a lot of time involved. With the news of the arrival of my son in early 2018 I decided to make a grown up decision to stop keeping bees myself for now. I didn’t need that risk with a child. However, I now have the best of both worlds. The bee hives here belong to my good friend Chuck. He keeps them on my property, but I do not have to work them. I simply get to walk outside and enjoy them. When Wyatt is old enough we will get a couple hives so he can learn, but for now we get to observe and enjoy honey from Chuck’s bees. #smokymountainbeekeeper #beelocal #honeybee #honeybees #honey #localhoney #keepbees #beekeeper #beehive #smallscalefarming #smallscalefarm #tennessee #easttennessee

I was laughing with someone the other day about bonbonniere back in our day - you know, the foil chocolate heart variety 😝 It got me thinking of what I had seen lately that would be a unique alternative... and then these gorgeous seed packets from @settlerhives popped up in my feed. Voila! Repost @settlerhives ・・・ I remember exactly the road we were driving on when I turned to Roger and almost exploded with excitement saying the word ‘SEEDS!!’ Like exactly like that, with full intention of that’s what we can do!! For us, for the bees, for the satisfaction of the end user! It just fits. It’s exactly how we feel, an imprint we are satisfied leaving on earth. I am so so happy with how it’s all come together. And somehow it’s very possible we are going to be sold out of our first line of stock that’s going into beautiful shops up and down the north and south coast of Queensland, Toowoomba of course, Brisbane and New South Wales before we even launch our online shop! #settlerhives #seedpackets #whitecosmos #plantflowers #keepbees #apiculture #beekeeping #backyardbeekeepers #flowernectar #seeds

Late season vs early season honey. Which is your favorite? For me it depends on what I'm using it for. I prefer the dark in my coffee but for deserts you cannot beat the sweet candy & floral notes from the early season flow I get from my backyard hives. #beekeeping #urbanbeekeeping #keepbees #bees #honey #honeybees #savethebees #harvest #love #loveyourself #live #Zen #zenbeeism #beeherenow #permaculture #permaculturist #permies #dowhatyoulove #staylifted #staylit #apis #todayintheapiary #beeyourself #gold #stayfrosty #eat #sweet #garden #organicgarden #organic

I’m putting together a bee study for next week and the more I learn the more I love the idea of keeping bees. Anyone have any experience with flow hives? They look amazing. For now we will just enjoy watching our bee hotel but it’s something I’d be keen on doing in the future. #bees #keepbees #honey #howtobeawildflower #homeschool

The bee hives of Chez Sacry Apiary are cooling off from these scorching summer days. Queen Zenobia of the south hive is slow yet steady in her brood build up, and yields a mellow working force. Where Queen Olympias of the northern hive is steadfast, who’s heirs tend to be a bit more aggressive and protective of their territory. I love them both.

Happy Thursday! It is a beautiful day! Have you been soaking up all of this sunshine?😍☀️ We absolutely love it! We have vented supers in. You can increase ventilation at the top of the hive with this vented super for 10-frame hives. It is great for improving air circulation within the hive for summer and it can help control bearding. Each side has screened vent holes for additional air circulation in the hive. 🐝Sometimes with foundation-less beekeeping, the bees just follow their true instinct and refuse to conform to the beekeepers 'guidance'. ☀️In this particular case a strong colony ⚡️chose to build free form comb🌀There are a number of things we as beekeepers could do to try & prevent this, but sometimes it just feels right to let the bees be Bees 🐝and do their thing. The result is this beautiful patterned comb⬆️.You can chose to see this as problematic , hard to extract & time consuming- or we can choose to bend our thinking a bit 💫and come up with some unique solutions😊 Sitting this box in the shade for a few hours before nightfall ensures all the bees evacuate back to the mother colony without any stress, brushing or comb cutting💨. We'll flip this box upside down like a cake🎂 to reveal the skeletal shell. Next we'll filet the comb away from the frames for Harvest🔪. If you take a second to observe the pattern before beginning to cut the comb, there's usually a ' key comb🔑Once it's removed, the rest of the comb comes away from the mass freely and cleanly. Actually, it's incredible to experience how delicately this comb is suspended within the frames structure. 'In line comb' is suspended with heavy, thick comb along the top bar, sides & bottom of the frames. This free form comb ⬆️ is suspended by fine bands of wax🕸almost like spider webbing , fused in strategic places through the honey box. 🍯Removing it is quick, with virtually no mess. We'll use this comb to fill our comb honey orders🐝.We extract all comb, and do not re-use wax in the beehives after harvest. This is part of our regenerative ,hygienic & treatment free beekeeping ✨ #beekeeping #sustainablebeekeeping #offgridbeekeeping #beeboys #beeks #beethechange #beeks #beegan #beefree #freethebees #certifiednaturallygrown #aloha #hawaiianhoney #freeform #letitbee #permaculture #sustainability #offgrid #offgridbeekeeping #instictualbeekeeping #bees # #keepbees #langstroth #freeformcomb #fortheloveofbees #naalehu #hawaii #regenerative #regenerativebeekeeping

🍀We found these wild Irish honeybees here in Ireland! We were really excited to see the dark Irish bee in action! Nature designed them to fly in lower temperatures and rain! It's really rare to see Irish bees in the wild, so we felt really lucky!🍀 #irishbees #blackhoneybees #wildhive #wildbees #healthyhive #healthyhoneybees #honeybees #beeks #beegan #europe #ireland #greattrip #alohairishbees #lucky #savethebees #keepbees #garnishisland #workerbees #ireland #beeboysinireland 🍀🌈🐝🇮🇪 we are looking forward to our return to Hawaii July 4🌋🌈🐝

#throwbackthursday to when I had my sweet bees! Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE should keep bees. I believe the world would be a much better place if everyone took the time to connect with nature, and agriculture, and i think Bees are a great introduction into that. This Tolstoy quote says it well “One can no more approach people without love than one can approach bees without care. Such is the quality of bees...“. We need food to survive, and we can’t make that food without the sweet little honeybee. As Einstein puts it “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” So as a reminder on this first day a summer, before you go pull out those pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers... just don’t do it. If you can’t grow it organically, find someone who can, and support their efforts. When my neighbor sprayed his lawn, two of my hives died overnight. The stuff they put in those sprays are no joke... so this year, and hopefully forever more, go organic, and think about the little things your impacting when you use those name brand chemicals. Just not worth it. And BUY a hive! (I recommend a Top Bar Beehive over a Langstroth hive, just wayyyy easier to manage being able to check one bar at a time, and not dealing with heavy boxes and supers!) beekeeping is a wonderful hobby, and you can get SO much of this sweet gold for just a few hours of your time each year! I went in my hives every other week- spending only as much time as needed to check the frames, find the queen, and check for any mites/disease/pests. About 15 min per hive. It’s one of the most educational things you could ever do with your family... so do some planning this year, find a spot for a couple hives, and for Christmas, buy a couple family bee hives and bee packages! I recommend two, so that you can compare between the two, & easily spot if something is wrong! Then in the spring (depending on your area) you’ll get your bee packages, and start the amazing journey of beekeeping! “The keeping of bees is like the direction of sunbeams.” Henry David Thoreau

I have a small hive of bumble bees living in an old bird box, today I managed to catch on film one of the bumble bees releasing the excess water it was storing ( bees store water to stop dehydration). I’m told this is quite a cool thing to actually see and film..... and quite tricky to film unless you’re @sirdavidattenborough 😊. . . . #bees #bumblebee #savethebees #beesarelife #beesarecool #ecology #vegan #veganbeelove #birdbox #life #sirdavidattenborough #nature #keepbees #nohoneyforme #beesareawesome

Beehive renovations are still happening. Some of our old boxes will soon become home decor, because there comes a point when you’ve got to know when to give your bees a little dignity and let go of the decrepit old hives. As I’ve been scraping and painting their hive boxes and frames, I’ve been thinking about all of the houses that I’ve scraped and painted over the years. There have been a lot. Sometimes a fresh coat of paint helps. Sometimes it’s just a temporary fix that only masks the major the disrepair. For now, the boxes that aren’t being held together with duct tape and a prayer are getting cleaned and repainted. The others will eventually become shadow boxes or garden art. Such is life. . . . . . . . . . #beehives #beekeeper #renovation #patina #beeswax #art #makeover #rawhoney #localhoney #thehoneybeequeenapiary #keepbees #fortheloveofhoney #deliciouslyunrefined #propolis #beeyard #beefarm #keeperofthebees

I found these bee awareness decorations outside our Mayor’s Office. Very eye catching, colourful and informative. There are some events planed as well to make people to do more to support bees. Over the past 15 years, colonies of bees have been disappearing, and the reason remains unknown. Referred to as ‘colony collapse disorder’, billions of Honey bees across the world are leaving their hives, never to return. In some regions, up to 90% of bees have disappeared! We can all do our bit to support bees. Plant flowers rich in nectar, such as lavender and bluebells, which will help bees find the food they need. There are number of other bee friendly plants we all can plant to support these wonderful insects. Honey bees visit approximately two million flowers to produce ONE pound of honey. To produce TWO pounds of honey, bees travel a distance equal to four times around the earth.
