The flying-saucer shaped Buzludzha Monument was built by the Bulgarian Communist Party to commemorate their origins in the country. It was abandoned after the fall of communism in 1989 and now, though crumbling into ruin, has become a sort of alternative tourist attraction.
You're not allowed go inside - there have been enough break-ins through the years that a permanent security guard is now posted onsite - but the outside is fascinating to walk around.
From a distance, it looks imposing and eerie, like someone is watching you from the empty windows. Up close, the concrete walls are covered in some pretty funky graffiti and the view from the levelled mountaintop is spectacular.
