Some preliminary amateur #hempfiber separation. I’m trying to break the #bastfiber away from the #Hurd in order to continue processing for some simple #hemp rope. Major props to those with #industrial equipment, because this process is time consuming and delicate. #handmade is still the way to go, putting #love and #intention into every action. #hemp teaches us so much! Hemp is stronger than cotton, uses less water and not nearly as many pesticides. It’s an obvious choice which plant to prefer. #mycannablessedlife #hempforhealth #cannabis #cannabiscommunity #diy #homesteadingskills #plantbased #ancientrevival #selfsufficient #hempishope #sustainable #ecofriendly #gogreen #wildcrafting #rewild #myowntwohands #greenliving #naturalfibers

Made some ricotta cheese with leftover whey from yogurt making. This is so delicious I just eat it with a spoon. Sometimes I’ll spread it on my sourdough bread, drizzle it with olive oil and some herbs from the garden. When tomatoes are back in season I’ll eat it with some black cherries. It is the best ricotta cheese I have ever had!

This post is on a horse blog for a homemade detangler recipe for horses but it can be used on dogs or any livestock that has the unfortunate roll in dreaded cockleburs!! Oh and it’s also made my mares mane grow out faster 🐴😁 the recipe is on www.horsegirllife .com if you find yourself with a prickly animal this season! #homesteadproblems

Having had to abandon the slaughtering of the sheep on Friday when we couldn’t catch them (oh the shame), we spent part of the weekend wooing them with sheep nuts and trying to convince them we meant no harm. They were having none of it. The slaughterman is coming back this morning so in a last ditch attempt to pen them I’ve laid a trail of sheep nuts through to the chicken enclosure to see if they’ll pen themselves. I don’t think that I could take the embarrassment if we don’t get it done... 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 #sheep #sheeps #sheepofig #sheepofinstagram #sheepoftheday #homereared #freerange #freerangesheep #smallholders #sheepfarming #sheep 🐑 #homestead #homesteadingskills #homesteadinglife #hobbyfarm #hobbyfarmer #hobbyfarming #slaughter #selfsufficiency #selfsufficient

Scoby action - looks like a mushroom placenta. My mumma scoby survived the month while I was away thanks to our awesome house sitter @ymmwhips who kept it feed and watered. I came home to my lovely brew of kombucha cranking. Brew is a mix of tea and sugar fermented with water - it kinda tastes like weak vinegar. We drink about 1/2 a cup twice day for gut health. Today I separated two scoby babies off to give away. . . #boorabeemountain #kombucha #scoby #scobylove #kombuchabrewing #guthealth #guthealthmatters #healthy #healthylifestyle #healthylife #yeast #raw #alive #alivefood #homesteading #homesteadingskills #diy #livingfood #guthealing #gut

Winter is a time for me to get creative and experiment! Anyone else? As many of you know, my husband was fortunate enough to get us another deer to fill the freezers! This doe happened to have quite a lot of fat on her that I couldn't stand to see go to waste! I saved 3 lbs, melted it down, and made some things that I know we will use! Cinnamon orange cedarwood tallow candles to burn on these dark, winter days and patchouli tallow balm to heal our dry, chapped skin from being out in the elements! . . . . . #candlemaking #homesteadingskills #wastenotwantnot #selfsufficiency #winteronthefarm #homesweethomestead #homesteading

#honingcreme #langlevedebijen #dromen #imkerdroom #bijenhouden #zelfmakenisveelleuker #honingsnoepen #plakkerigevingers #bijenhoning #selfsufficient #homesteading #zelfvoorzienendleven #kinderenindekeuken #makingmemories #homesteadingskills

Laying out and cutting patterns for seal skin and beaver mittens. I love working with furs and leathers. In the last 3 years since I "tried" my first pair...I have gained so much! Not just in the doing of it...but in the learning a new skill! Working my brain above the everyday. The traditional northern skills I have learnt since moving here are irreplaceable in my opinion. . . . #thelindsayshomestead #northernhomestead #northof60 #homesteadingnorthof60 #homesteadingskills #homesteadlifestyle #sealskinmitts #handmademittens #traditionalsewing #traditionalskills #yellowknifearts #lifeinyellowknife #nwt #shoplocalyk #homesteadbusiness

Yesterday in our stories I shared that were were gonna make a loaf of bread and to be truthful we were kinda scared that is would fail. 🍞 Here is the loaf before our entire family devored it with @kerrygoldusa grass feed butter. 🍞 This Breadman Machine took 3 hours and the cleanup was the best part - there was none. With limited water this has got to be the best feature ever! . . . Sunday was a processing day on our farm. This little quacker and two of his friends went off to freezer camp. It is a tough reality as we strive for an environmentally conscious farm and lifestyle. It is never fun, but there is something so rewarding in raising food for your family. I know it can be a touchy topic, I actually used to be a vegetarian. I wouldn’t have imagined ever raising and processing my own meat! But here I am, doing it and planning to do it again. I went into more detail on my new blog post, link in bio if you’re interested :)

I think I have a canning addiction😂. I had some apples someone gave me and they were begging to become cinnamon apples. 🍎 In each can are peeled and chopped apples, 1tsp of lemon juice, boiling water, and 1/4 tsp cinnamon. 🍎 The jars are then hot water bathed for 20 minutes. 🍎 Pulled out of the canner and set out to cool and seal! 🍎 #preppingforwinter #homesteadingskills #foodpreservation #canningisbest #selfsufficientliving #prepperfamily #treetojar #cinnamonapples

I spent 2 hours yesterday rounding up three escaped pigs. 🐷 It of course happened when I was home alone, and had food on the stove (which burned...they burned my bacon 🥓 😩the humor of my bacon burning because of the pigs was not lost to me), and I ended up getting covered in pig muck (head to toe)🤨 But the pigs are safely back in their pen and the fence is fixed. At one point I was so frustrated I wanted to cry, but then I had Darryl Worley’s song “sounds like life to me” pop in my head and I sucked it up and went back to fixing the fence. It’s T-minus two weeks before these babies meet the butcher and fill some freezers. I’ve loved taking care of these girls and watching them grow. Though I’m not as attached to them as I thought I would be. This first year raising meat pigs 🐖 has been educational for sure and the finished product will be the test of whether we raise them again. If we do I know hog panels are on my Christmas list this year 😂 Pictured is the beautiful Dinner after she rolled in their mud pit. Her sisters Fried rice and Pork-chop were locked in a horse stall until reinforcements arrived, so she had the pen and the treats I gave her all to herself. . . . . . . #meatpigs #pig #porkypig #homesteadinglife #farmlife #pigpen #raisingmeattherightway #freezerbound #farmanimals #foodblog #spoiledpig #homesteadingskills

Made our drinks for the week yesterday. Blueberry soda, cranberry soda and black tea Kombucha. I must say that Kombucha handling is not for those with easy gag reflex. Its a challenge for me, but I keep the health benefits in mind and just handle it. The sodas are made from fermented water kefir grains then a second ferment (F2) with fruit. BUT, can we talk about my kitten ears? I saw her in a restaurant, hanging in a basket on a beautiful wooden stand, last summer. I don't know what happened but I looked down and a piece was on the floor and she lived happily ever after. 😲💚😲

Several years ago, and several years into the Equilibrium Diet, we made the decision to take more responsibility for our food. We usually had a small garden, but we eat a lot of meat and wanted to learn more about the animals and process of procuring meat. Lucky for us, when we moved to #asheville , our neighbors just down the road were organic, free-range ranchers and poultry farmers. We get virtually 100% of our beef and chicken from them. This was the kids' second time watching how to process chickens and it was a great #homeschooling day - they were fascinated by all of the organs in the bird and what function each had and learned all about the difference between egg-laying chickens and "meat-chickens". #homesteadingskills #freerangechicken #meatchickens #equilibriumdiet

I made some pickled onions yesterday...they still have to sit a week or two before they will be ready. Our whole family likes to eat them as snacks although they are not the nicest on your breath (something to keep in mind if you are having visitors😂) Pickled onions are really easy to make and don't take much effort at all. The only time consuming task is peeling the onions, but that can be made easier if you pour boiling water over them and let them sit for 1 minute before draining them and placing them into cold water. The skins come off with ease! . . . #homesteadinglife #lifestyle #homesteading #farmlife #homesteadingskills #preserves #healthysnacks #pickles #southafrica #cookingskills

Wild Rose petals are collected in the summer and the rose hips are harvested in the fall. They have much more vitamin C than oranges, they help the body's immune system, are a diuretic as well as brings down fevers. Rose hips make an excellent reliever of cold and flu symptoms! I will be drying some for winter time tea and will also be making a syrup for sore throats and colds. . . . . . #wildrosehips #foraging #naturesmedicine #wildmedicine #autumnonthefarm #homesteadingskills

Our time in Louisiana is providing wonderful opportunities for us to gather and store items up for winter. Its also giving us practical experience in homesteading skills. 🍃 These pecans are from a few limbs that hang over into my dads yard. 🍃 I payed my children one cent per pecan. My dad told me lots of places only pay half a cent. 🍃 Any guess as to how many pecan they have picked? . . . . #atablefullinthewoods #louisianapecans #pecans #preservetheharvest #harvest #nuts #homesteadingusa #homesteadingskills #homesteadersofamerica #homesteadersofinstagram

This is the first time that I've ever made venison bone broth and it turned out excellent! I used marrow and joint bones and homegrown veggies. I simmered it over the woodstove for just under 24 hours and I ended up with this gelatinized goodness. It has a flavor similar to beef bone broth and it will be used in my venison stew recipe. If you've been thinking about making it to get more use out of your deer, you should do it! . . . . . #venisonbonebroth #bonebroth #westonaprice #wapf #nourishingfood #nourishingbroth #homesteading #homesteadersofinstagram #homesteadersofamerica #homesteadingskills #offgridfarm

Our latest video: DIY Chicken Coop Door Build! . Because of the ONE predator we've been dealing with this week, we added a door to our chicken coop so the goat can get in and out easily AND to make it faster to get the ducks in (turns out, they don't like to go single file through our automatic door.) . We made this door for free using materials we already had on hand. Want to check it out? Head on over to YouTube! Day 31 of the October #gettoknowahomesteader scavenger hunt: farm thing you are most proud of. It’s our collective confidence. It all started with a talk about privacy and self sufficiency. When we decided to start this adventure we had no idea what we were doing (some days we still don’t) but we decided to do it anyway. We aren’t scared to try new things and are always ready with a laugh when they don’t work or a high five when they do. It takes teamwork, humility, google, YouTube and a sense of humor but we are making it work.
