Now that is some gorgeous chicken stock! So far I have twelve quarts of this liquid gold from the bones of two roasted chickens plus trimmings from carrots, celery, onions, and garlic, as well as herbs from our garden. I love getting use out of things that would otherwise have gone into the compost or the garbage! • • • #homecanning #balljars #wisconsin #growyourown #liquidgold #frugalliving #composting #homemade #homesteadingskills #eatlocal #nofilter #pressurecanning #bonebroth

Decided to take up more #homesteadingskills this summer - like sewing! Thank you to @mellysews for the simple, easy-to-follow tutorial for this drawstring pouch. I can’t wait to try more projects. ✨ Fun fact: in grade 8 home ec class, I nearly failed the sewing portion because I sewed the legs of my pajama pants together. So this is quite an achievement for my challenged self 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Tried a quick dry fit of my new canning storage. It’s not quite finished and it’s nothing special, but considering it’s the first thing I’ve ever built I’m just stoked that it’s level(ish) and functional! I’ll post more pictures when it’s all done. • • • #balljars #homecanning #ryobination #makitatools #boschtools #milwaukeetools #selfreliance #imadethis #renaissancewoman #homesteadingskills #pearsonfarm #strawberrys #webejammin #pickles #girlswithpowertools #farmersmarket #lookwhaticando

🤛🏻✅💪🏼 It was a busy week/day. 💪🏼✅🤛🏻 . • I (Athena) sprouted mung beans for the first time (don't laugh...baby steps!!) • Made date-sweetened vanilla almond milk with leftovers of each, FROZE them & at my GENIUS husband's suggestion, used them for some creamy aeropress brewed ice coffee 🤤🤤🤤 • Strung some Farmer's Market greasy beans • Saved my own Aquafaba from home cooked chickpeas for future vegan donut & homemade vegan mayo recipes • Picked and am drying dill and Tulsi (holy basil) from our herb garden • And made a TON of hummus...also retired an old food processor as it started smoking after a few seconds of use.....yikes 😬😳😤. . And other fun things...like making necklaces with my daughter and reading stories, giving kisses to her and all the puppies (6 at current count, 5 of our own + 1 summer guest), researching straw-bale gardening (not sure how I feel about it yet...will probably do my own version with 1/2 bales and more compost --we have hard, compacted red clay....any suggestions???), refined the plan for the fall garden taking into account less sun in our new yard than we'd hoped 😐, & made dinner out of 6 different left-over meals (!!!!!!!) WHEW!!!! And it's only 5:30pm! #familymovienight #stillfeellikeihaveSOmuchtodo -------------------------------------------------- ♻️Reduce, reuse, THEN recycle♻️ -------------------------------------------------- #homesteadskills #sprouting #homemade #homesteading #veganhomesteadibg #homesteaders #veganblog #homesteadblog #farmersmarket #veganicfarming #veganfood #veganicgardeners #veganfarmers #permaculture #veganpermaculture #onestepatatime #gardening #vegangardening #appalachia #asheville #veganasheville #canning #preserving #zerowaste #nowaste #reuse #zerowasteliving #homesteadingskills

Here is a firewood hack I learned at a very young age (if you split wood by hand). Wrap a chain around the piece you’d like to split also using a carabiner or a hook and split it as many times as you would like. Swipe to the right to see! (For the record, I would use an “S Hook” instead of a carabiner. It will last a lot longer). #ohiohomestead #homesteadohio #homesteadinglife #homesteadingohio #homesteadingskills #choppingwood #woodsplitting #splittingwoodbyhand #homesteadlife #homesteadliving #farmstead

Do you make your own vanilla? It is so easy! I made this last Christmas and it has just been sitting in my cabinet until I ran out of the other stuff. Merely slice vanilla beans open, put into a bottle and fill with at least 80 proof vodka then let it sit for several weeks.

Our club had a fantastic opportunity to tour Cloud Nine Farm today! Mark and Pandora were super kind and happy to answer our questions about their operation. I felt inspired after I left this afternoon so I went home and built my own little cheesepress. Once I can get my hands on some milk, we’ll see how she does! #atleastitlookslegit #lovemesomecheese . . . #cheese #cheesemaking #cheesemaker #pressedcheese #aristancheese #cheesepress #goatcheese #goat #goatkeeping #milk #dairy #makeyourownfood #farmandgarden #diy #weekendproject #homesteading #homesteadingskills #summer #itsfairseason

Our first ripe tomatoes! I did not get to eat one myself, but was told they were delicious. Lol! I know it's only a matter of time before we're overrun with them now. Can't wait!

Plant medicine in the making! Chopped yarrow and plantain in olive oil. I'll leave this for about a month to infuse the oil with the healing oils in the plant then mix with beeswax for a salve. In love with my moon henna🌙🌛

Plantain and yarrow washed and drying. These will be used to infuse olive oil that will later go into a healing salve and who knows what other goodies. I forgot about them in the fridge for a few days.

Home Reno back in full swing! The kids and I went on a treasure hunt today, over hills and far away. Got lost too 😆 But we found the treasure! These old #dogspikes are getting the #homeschool #science treatment before they become a feature in our home. . . Rust be gone with a good soak in vinegar for a couple of days, scrub clean, then neutralise in baking soda for a day. . How is this so... vinegar-acetic acid, reacts with rust-hydrated iron oxide and forms a soluble salt that can be scrubbed off. Leaving it for longer periods can also make the metal rust resistant by forming a smooth hard oxide film on the surface like a protective coating. . Results to come! . . #homerenovation # #homerenovationideas #homerenovationlife #homeschoolaustralia #homeschoolscience #homeschoolkids #treasurehunting #recycle #reuse #repurpose #diyproject #diywoman #backyardscience #chemicalreaction #rustbegone #vinegarpower #nonastieshere #earthfriendlyliving #begreen #homesteadingskills #vinegarrustremoval #metalandvinegar #problemsolver #underthebirchtree #samanthabirch

So amazing to have this young lady back in our life to help with jam making. I have had a frozen shoulder with calcific tendonitis for 6 weeks now which has forced me to stop and rest. Another huge lesson in accepting what is. 😊Nomakaya has been an absolute star doing all the chopping, peeling , heavy pot lifting. A big thank you to @inthegreenbackpackers for the passionfruit for our marmalade. Love being able to barter chilli sauce for fruit instead of buying. Anyone got some grapefruit for barter ? #lovewhatyoudo #thehomesteadlife #jammaking #orangemarmalade #selfsustainableliving #lifeintheslowlane #homemadeisbest #preservativefree #homesteadingskills

I’m going to harvest some beautiful smelling wild rose from my backyard in 1-3 days to use in a new KOKI product. Hmmm....decisions, decisions! . . . What do you think I should create?

Look it...we have a green tomato! He's tiny, but he's there. I really wanted fresh tomatoes by 4th of July and it just might happen!

Got a grimy tub or tile? This mixture works great! I mixed these 3 together to make a paste and scrubbed the tub and tile with a bristle brush, then rinsed and followed up on tough spots with a little white vinegar spray. It worked wonders! I was always super sensitive to traditional cleaning products, especially ammonia, so switching to natural products was a no brainer! I had to use lysol at work this week and I came home every day feeling sick. It's not good for us or the planet.

We are having fun doing something Ive been dragging my feet about. Dutch oven cooking over a bed of coals. We tried banana sourdough bread first before attempting the actual loaf of sourdough, in fear I would scortch the bottom. Im not use to this technique and usually blow my husband off when he mentions it because, well, Im not the worlds greatest fire tenant. But, practice, practice. Im tired of flat bread! So, with my sons help we built a small fire. I did take part of an old trash barrel that had split and buried it partly in the ground to create better protection from the wind around my fire. We live in an open area so we needed that extra protection. I let my batter sit for a few hours and get really bubbly. About 25min later had a delicious bread made and much to my surprise no burning! #survivalskills #homesteadingskills #homesteading #homesteadingmama #primitive #primitiveskills #primitivecooking #dutchoven #dutchovencooking #bread #cooking #sourdough

Holiday jam is cooling and we have loads of berries left. Hoping I can talk my Mom into making a Strawberry-Rhubarb cobbler with a couple quarts. We'll see if she goes for it!

Beans! What type of green bean do you plant? This is our 2nd year planting Jade. For many years it was Roma II for us, but we're liking Jade pretty well, too.
