In the basement of our 100+ year old farmhouse you can find words like beets, beans, tomatoes with measurement 10 qt, 5 qt, 3 qt and so on. This reminds me of a favorite quote⠀ "The first supermarket supposedly appeared on the American landscape in 1946. That is not very long ago. Until then, where was all the food? Dear folks, the food was in homes, gardens, local fields, and forests. It was near kitchens, near tables, near bedsides. It was in the pantry, the cellar, the backyard". -Joel Salatin⠀ .⠀ I imagine if these 100+ year old walls could talk they would say a lot. They have seen a time from back before me or my parents or even my grandparents generation back to when your garden your back yard that was the grocery store and these little hand written cursive scratchings are a reminder of how the "grocery store" was stocked with homegrown, real good for you food.⠀ .⠀ Now I look at this as a goal, a way of life to return to❤️⠀ ⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ #homestead #homesteading #homesteadlife #homesteader #homesteadersofinstagram #instagramhomesteaders #homesteadersofamerica #homesteadliving #homesteadfarm #homesteadkids #homesteadmom #homesteadingskills #homesteadgoals #simplelife #simplelifehappylife #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #sustainablelifestyle #sustainablefood #theupcycledfamily #garden #gardenlife #gardener #gardens #gardening #homegrown #homegrownveggies #homegrownfood #homegrowngoodness

My husband makes the best homemade pasta and Lorelai always asks to help and he saves her a little piece of dough. He helps her put it through the roller and she makes fun shapes and designs. I love to see them spending time together and making memories. 💜 #daddyanddaughtertime #familycooking #homemadefreshpasta

Yesterday we slaughtered our cornish cross meat birds. We had a great crew, although I’m missing a picture of one member of the team. We are happy that we can be self sufficient in some of the ways we procure our food. Two new people learned how to process chickens for meat. I’m so happy that I can pass on the information that I have learned over the years and maybe they will start raising their own chicken for meat in the near future. @foodcyclist @marplies @peaseporridge #cornishcross #meatbirds #farmmarketingsolutions #homestead #homesteadingskills #foodforwinter #vermont2023

Yogurt on the backburner, cooling and awaiting culture before it rests for 8 hours, and cheese on the front burner heating to 185 before lemon juice is added and then sets and drains for 2 hours. 😊 Oh and 2 pans of garlic-oregano sourdough croutons getting crunchy in the oven, yum! #busyinthekitchen #cheesemaking #yogurtmaking #goatsmilk #goatcheese #goatmilkproducts #homemadecroutons #homemadedairy #diycheese #goatkeeping #lovemygoats #homesteadmama #homesteadingskills #selfreliance #kitchenexperiments #smallfarmliving #farmherlife

My babies are finally growing! I know most of you are already harvesting, but my garden is just starting. We had snow after Mother’s Day so I had to start my garden late. But my seeds are coming up and they are so cute! 🌱 How’s your garden growing? #gardening #growyourown #garden #veggies #justeatrealfood #raiseyourownfoods #lovegardening #homestead #homesteading #farmlife #homesteader #colorado #homegrown #homesteadlife #simpleliving #countryliving #homesteadinglife #homesteadingskills #homesteaders #realfoodhomestead

I am an attentive gardener....in May & June. I am a neglectful gardener....in July & August. 🤷🏼‍♀️🚜🌱 Trying my best this year to be better prepared to handle the heat, weeds, watering schedule, harvest overload and more. Also trying to not take on more than I can handle. 😬 Knowing where my food comes from is HIGH on my priority list. ✔ Nothing is perfect, but this is a process and a journey and I am ready to walk it. Next on my to-do list? 🗒 Learn to make and can some strawberry jam.... wish me luck. 🤞 Canning and preserving is hopefully going to become a big part of my life moving forward. Any advice and encouragement is happily welcomed! ❤💯 . . #wellnessjourney #mindbodyspirit #healthmatters #nourishyourself #knowwhereyourfoodcomesfrom #organicgarden #gardengathered #homesteadingjourney #homesteadingskills #sustainablelifestyle #organiclife #canningandpreserving #jamsandjellies #harvest #growyourown #mykitchen #freshfoods #backyardfarmer #suburbanfarming #suburbanhomestead #myflock #farmiswheretheheartis #optoutside #outdoorlife #modernfarming

Our first little harvest of organic strawberries! We have around 110 plants which is doubled from last year. Last year I believe we harvested about 11 quarts from our patch but only two of those made it to the freezer! We visit a local U-pick farm every year and that's what I do most of my preserving from. Last year I put up 19 quarts into the freezer and many pints of canned jam. My goal this year is 25-30 quarts into the freezer and less jam since there is a lot left over. We'll be eating our weight in strawberries too, don't you worry! #organicgardening #organicstrawberries #growyourownfood #growwhatyoueat #homesteadingskills #homesteading #homesteaders #preservetheharvest #gardenharvest

While I am still against these wind turbines and think they really aren’t as environmentally efficient as they are made out to be, there is a beauty in their design and seeing an old windmill next to one creates such a vivid contrast. #windmillsofinstagram #windturbines #protectourprairies

#HomesteadingSkills ⠀ ⠀ Record keeping is a useful and important skill to have in many areas of your life:⠀ –financial planning (bank account information, mortgage documents, etc.)⠀ -gardening (knowing when and where things are planted, what).⠀ –food preparation and preservation (knowing what I’ve tried, the outcome, and figuring out what I could do differently).⠀ –vehicle maintenance (having a record of the dates when you had things repaired or replaced).⠀ ⠀ #homestead #homesteading #homesteadinglife #urbanhomesteading #urbanhomesteader #homesteadlife #homesteader #recordkeeping #skillstolearn

I have been a pea hater my whole life. I grew up knowing them as mushy textures in a can of peas. I tolerated them in things like soups, stir fry's etc. Well a few months ago I learned about sugar snap peas, and that you can eat them raw pod and all. I was instantly in love. It might sound silly after all these years of gardening and homesteading and I just learned what a sugar snap pea is! But it's true, and I'm hopelessly in garden love with them. This is my first harvesting time of homegrown sugar snap peas, and I must admit so many don't even make it to the harvest basket, I'll eat them straight off the vine, these things are the best!⠀ 👌⠀ What will you eat straight from the garden?⠀ 🌱⠀ ⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ #homestead #homesteading #homesteadlife #homesteader #homesteadersofinstagram #instagramhomesteaders #homesteadersofamerica #homesteadliving #homesteadfarm #homesteadkids #homesteadmom #homesteadingskills #homesteadgoals #simplelife #simplelifehappylife #sustainable #sustainability #sustainableliving #sustainablelifestyle #sustainablefood #theupcycledfamily #garden #gardenlife #gardener #gardens #gardening #homegrown #homegrownveggies #homegrownfood #homegrowngoodness

And my kind of botanical chaos in the urban jungle. 🌿 I’ve put away a lot of harvest from medicinal mushrooms to all kinds of flower petals and herbs. Tinctures are tincturing and herbal honeys are honeying, a small batch of ACV is vinegaring on the right windowsill. My avocado tree on the left is thriving after another replant. Invisibly in the background two scobies are growing, several plant dyes are drying, stinging nettle sprout is resurrecting, wild rosebuds are pleasantly smelling and my ancient iron mordant is mordanting. All is well...with no order. 😉 . . . #earthmedicine #makefromscratch #makeyourownfood #harvest #selfsufficiency #selfsufficient #foraged #forager #foraging #wildfood #wildfooflove #plantmedicine #holistichealth #herbs #herbalism #herbalife #preservingtheharvest #dryingherbs #herbalist #tinctures #medicinewoman #wildwoman #naturegirl #naturopathy #myherbalstudies #naturalremedies #homesteadingskills #offgrid #apothecary #organic

Unfinished, but started on my first pair of underwear (haha okay second but those were...a mess) made from a recycled cotton stretch dress which I can probably get 2 more pairs out of! They don't look like much but they are so soft and comfy! I love that I can choose to adorn my body with items that are handmade, ethical & creating less harm to the mother 🌎✨ #mybodymychoice #handmade #upcycle #underwear #sewing #handmadeunderwear #ethicalfashion #learningtosew #diy #homesteadingskills

I love to garden and watch things grow and bloom but this year on our new homestead has been rough. We were hit with two late May snow storms and freezing temps followed by a week of cold and rain. Many seeds I planted didn’t make it and my peppers and tomatoes didn’t even survive protected in the greenhouse 🤦‍♀️😢. But today things are blooming (my potatoes have taken off this last week), I was able to mulch most things and it’s so rewarding to see our hard work pay off. Each year I learn something new so maybe by the time my future grandkids garden, I can pass my wisdom down to them. 😉 #highaltitudegardening #coloradogardening #highplainsgardening

Heading home from a trip today. I had a wonderful time but excited to be going home. Hubs had to enlist some help after picking green beans. Love that his grandpa still loves to help when he can. I wonder how many millions of green beans he’s snapped in his almost 93 years?
