The feminine is cyclical, fluid, gracious, earthy, embodied, passionate, juicy, intuitive and nurturing. Feminine energy is pure Shakti, life force. She is the breath that flows through us, she is prana, vitality, bliss and infinite creativity.
The feminine is an energy so denied and supressed in our patriarchal & over-masculine world. The energy of Shakti has nothing to do with gender, and that's why I love teaching Earth Yoga to both men & women.
Traditionally yoga was done in either forests or sacred temple sites. Ancient yogi's & yogini's didn't practise "poses", nor did they bother about perfect alignment or attaining a more advanced practise. They simply breathed like the trees, stretched their bodies in ways that felt pleasurable, blissful and created expansion in both body and mind. The forests reminded them of their own cyclical nature, and how to honor your own rhythms and seasons. That birth, life, death and re-birth are nothing to be afraid of, but part of our cosmic design. The ones who practiced in temples realized their body was a sacred temple, a place to seek refuge, a sanctuary to connect with their own inner beloved and peaceful silence.
Nowadays we mostly practice in fancy studios, placing our expansive yoga mats in neat rows, wearing posh yoga clothing. Yoga has become a trend and part of the market place. Inevitably competition, striving, pushing (the masculine qualities of our economy) have entered the mystic realm. Intuitive movement, listening to the inner teacher and simplicity have taken the back row.
We have chosen comfort over connection.
We need to become more wild again, get our bare feet on Mother Earth. Feel her pulse, her rhythms, and let her Shakti move through us, let her dance our bodies, breath our rivers, shower us with her unconditional love. And in doing so become together with her one sacred land, with mountains, valleys, forests and rivers of pure vitality and health. We need to remember, for our self and our planet, that nature is our greatest teacher, most powerful medicine and our only way back home.
