Artist's Conk (Ganoderma applanatum) • Once a mushroom herbalist told me that to use Artist's Conk for art was a terrible waste of medicine.... But what could be more medicinal than sitting by a lake with a friend, drawing magic into a mushroom as loons call in the distance? Normally I don't use this mushroom for art because there's usually not very much of it, but on this day I found HUNDREDS, so I figured one piece of art wouldn't tip the sustainability scale. • Medicinally this mushroom is pretty much interchangeable with Reishi, and should be cultivated to take some of the pressure off of Reishi of doing all the work. Besides its obvious benefits to the immune system, liver, and for fighting cancer in the body, Artist's Conk and Reishi have been traditionally used to increase oxygen use in the case of exercise and high altitudes. They are also mast cell stabilisers, which means that they can decrease histamine responses in people, which I have found helpful for those who have leaky gut (suddenly reacting to all kinds of foods), or food sensitivities. • Basic actions include: antiviral, antibacterial, immune-modulating (safe for those with autoimmune conditions because it can calm down an overactive immune system, or increase an immune response when it is weak), blood sugar balancing, anti-inflammatory, cancer fighting, and probably some other fun things that haven't been discovered yet! (Sources from school notes, personal experience, and Robert Rogers) • There is not much (if anything) that has been written about the magic of this mushroom, so I might have to add from my own intuition. All mushrooms help to ground and connect us, connect us to earth and each other, and they are more closely related to us than to other plants. This particular mushroom speaks to creativity and leaving one's mark, and if harvested respectfully and sustainably, could be a perfect medium for writing intentions and perhaps spells if one is so inclined. • If anyone is interested in purchasing the conk pictured, let me know, I'm letting it go for $50.

GOLDENSEAL // Hydrastis canadensis The popularity of this golden rhizome has led to its overharvest and gradual disappearance from many woodlands. We harvest from our own locally abundant patch by breaking a small portion off of larger rhizomes and replanting what’s left. While we were harvesting today, we talked about its remarkable similarity to Oregon grape, another plant rich in berberine (which gives them both their golden color) and hydrastine. While goldenseal is disappearing from woodlands in Eastern North America, Oregon grape is a western native that spreads itself readily in the Southeast, where in some places it is considered an invasive exotic. The two plants are used almost interchangeably in medicine: they are both antibacterial and fungicidal. Internally, as bitters, they stimulate the digestive system and support the liver. Both can be used externally as well. If you are thinking about using goldenseal, find out how it has been harvested and consider using an alternative such as Oregon grape. For more information about at-risk medicinals, check out the important work being done by the folks at the Goldenseal Sanctuary and @unitedplantsavers

In response to a large amount of questions about Sumac, I'm going to explain the ways I use it and also include some traditional information on this herb. First, just to clarify, this is NOT poison Sumac. The species that I find most often in these mountains is Rhus typhina (Staghorn Sumac). I personally use Sumac to stop fluid loss from the channels of elimination. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Sumac would be classified as a Yin herb as it has a sour/astringent taste and it helps hold fluids. For example, and this is an important note, for some toddlers that are potty training, they simply cannot hold in their urine due to a relaxed tissue state. They get in trouble over and over for mistakes through their underwear, but it is actually not anything they can control. (Same here for anyone, especially elderly experiencing this problem). Sumac tincture shines in this instance and for toddlers they really don't need much to see dramatic results very quickly. Excessive fluid loss would also be diarrhea, excessive sweating, frequent urination, and profuse uterine bleeding. There are many other uses for Sumac that make it an herb worth having in your own medicine cabinet! Please do more research if you are interested in it, as I truly believe herbs call to us for reasons beyond the mind. The tincture I have started will be in the shop in five weeks, so stay tuned! ❤️ With my love, Elderberry

There was a great episode of @hiddenbrain recently that highlighted the growing body of scientific evidence that supports the need for nature time for our physical, social, and emotional health & development. It's not just a nice amenity. Access to green space, the presence of trees, and even the smell of plants have significant positive impacts on individual and societal health. Your body knows this, as there are measurable, lasting benefits to your immune system from just 3 days in nature. . . And yet, like food and shelter, this basic human need, to spend time in the natural habitat in which our species evolved, is not accessible to all. Many people grow up without any exposure to wilderness and our health and communities suffer the consequences. . Our goal here at Wild Persimmon is to share the healing power of plants with those who need it most. From meditating in the garden, to processing botanicals with our fingers, to inhaling the aromatics of a fresh herbal infusion, we have dedicated our lives to bridging the gap between human and nature, healing both in the process. . . 🍃CULTIVATE HEALING🍃Check out the link in our bio to learn more . . . #herbschool #communityherbalism #botanicalmedicine #naturelover #communityherbalist #plantmedicine #naturalhealth #herbalism #herbalist #permaculture #meditation #breathe #yogafamily #yoga #pranayama #indy #indianapolis #healingplants #healthyself #alternativemedicine #naturalmedicine #naturemedicine

Yikes! It’s been a hot minute since we talked about the first 2 mood support blends, so let’s move on to the last 2! The next one up is a personal fav: Balance 🌿 . This is what I would call a foundational oil blend. I highly recommend grabbing this blend first, if you’re just getting started working with oils in your magickal practice. When teaching folks about witchcraft, I like to start with basics: grounding, centering & taking control of the flow of your energy (as much as one can). Balance can help support these 🌿 . An easy way to use Balance would be to diffuse and/or roll on the bottoms of your feet before any meditation or magickal working. This will help keep you grounded while you work, so you don’t feel high as a kite when everything’s done! 🤪 . 15ml bottle retails for $26.67, but is $20 USD w/ wholesale membership (or about 8 cents a drop) 😘 . Remember - if you don’t have a wholesale account yet, just hit me up and I’ll walk you through the process. There are currently SIX enrollment kits that are 20% off right now, so Sept is a great month to add oils to your witches cabinet 🌙🧙‍♀️🌿💧🌹 . . . #balance #doterraoils #groundingblend #moodsupport #grounding #centering #rootchakra #earthstarchakra #motherearth #witchestools #hedgewitch #greenwitchery #plantmagic #herbalism #herbology #cleansingandclearing #meditationtools #diffuserblends #findyourbalance #oiluses

Watercress is a very powerful vegetable! It is also very useful for colds. A handful of fresh organic watercress will clear your throat of mucus in no time. I always add it to sandwiches, avocado toast, salads or anywhere I used to use spinach before I knew it was acidic. . . I have noticed that organic vs. conventional has slimmer stems which are tastier, I believe the stems on conventional might not be edible because they are much thicker.✌🏽 .~ #indigenous #indigenoushealth #ancientpeople #ancientwisdom #native #nature #naturallaw #tropics #tropicalpeople #carbonfamily #africanbiomineralbalance #electricfood #electricfood #alkaline #alkalinefood #alkalinefoods #alkalinevegan #blackvegan #blackvegansofig #blackhealth #blackhealthmatters #rawfoodist #rawfooddiet #rawfoods #herbalist #herbalism #detoxspecialist #healthyself #drsebi

🌿ᗰOᖇIᑎGᗩ ✨ Recently moringa has been getting more attention in the wellness community, but this plant that is rich in medicinal value has been used by native peoples of Asia, and Africa for a very long time, and eventually across the americas. . ✨This healing tree is richer in vitamin A than carrots, richer in vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk, and more iron than spinach. It is a perfectly complete food in itself . High in antioxidants, it guards against skin cancers and protects the prostate and also helps with joint pain. . 🌿It is a wonderful plant ally for anyone with blood sugar issues like diabetes and also as a preventative measure. I can tell you that I’ve seen it lower high blood pressure in such a short span of time that even doctors are impressed. . I’ve also seen it help a client with crippling headaches. There is a lot to be said about nutritional deficiencies and chronic pain. . ✨Moringa is a wonderful postpartum nourisher that I’m so excited to use more for clients. I took an online course on The fourth trimester nutrition with @centehua.sage where she used fresh Moringa in a healing postpartum bone broth. Because of it’s blood building- high iron nature, it replenishes, this is greatly connected to a mothers milk supply. If a mother is not adequately receiving these vital nutrients, how can her body keep up with demand? Moringa is a galactagogue, so it does increase milk supply. . ✨This past weekend I found some at the farmers market and was so excited to see it. I’ll be making a broth with it and maybe drying some for tea! . . #fourthtrimester #nourish #moringa #thefourthtrimester #magamama #postpartumdoula #postpartumcare #postpartumhealth #40daytradition #holisticnutrition #healthiswealth #motherhood #doula #nycdoula #birthdoula #brooklyndoula #motherhoodrising #diabetes #bloodsugardiet #healingherbs #plantsheal #herbalist #herbalism #fortgreenfarmersmarket

Did you know the active ingredient in aspirin is salicylic acid, which is an isolated compound from the extract of white willow bark? White willow bark extract has been used for centuries for pain relief and inflammation. Hippocrates documented his use and the effectiveness of white willow to ease pain and reduce fevers, as did Ancient Egyptian texts, along with the Cherokee and other native american tribes. In 1828, chemists began isolating white willow barks anti-inflammatory and pain relieving compounds, later making it into the over the counter aspirin we have today. Birch Botanicals White Willow Extract is organic and straight from the source, made with no synthetic ingredients, and is highly absorbable. During this time of year as the temperatures become cooler, our desire to drink water tends to decrease. It is equally important to stay hydrated during the cooler months of the year. Dr. Christopher taught, “Distilled water flushes the minerals and inorganic salts, which cause sickness, out of the body...” He suggested drinking 1 ounce of steam distilled water for every pound of body weight, per day. It’s a simple reminder, but stay hydrated and keep your body healthy! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #water #theschoolofnaturalhealing #SNH #drchristopher #herbs #herbalism #herbalist #herbalmedicine #health #healing #healthylifestyle

Taking time to stop and smell the Roses Aromatherapy is thought to work by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system — the part of the brain that controls emotions. Egyptians used odors to treat diseases, and the Greek physician Dioscorides even wrote books on essential oils and their healing properties. Today, aromatherapy is popular not only in spas but also as a way to relieve labor pains, reduce chemotherapy side effects, and promote restful sleep. Mie University School of Medicine found that patients with depression needed smaller doses of antidepressant medications after citrus fragrance treatment. Another study from the University of Vienna demonstrated that when the scent of orange oil was used in dental clinics, female patients exhibited decreased anxiety. These studies suggest that some fragrances may have a clinically quantifiable effect on mood. So smellin good smells can actually make you happier... it's science. 🤓 So go out and sniff stuff!

. . . this brings me joy ♡ Children respond so well to herbals & the sooner you introduce herbal tea to your little ones, the easier it will be to give them what their little bodies need Visit @raising.little.cheeks for a mama's review of our Sacred Child Herbal Tea #oakmoonrising #slowherbals #wholeherbs #folkherbals #herbalist #herbalism #herbaltea #wisewomantraditions #etsy #etsyshop #etsysellersofinstagram #etsyshopowner #etsyseller #etsyherbalist #etsyfinds #astillsmallpoint_jubilee #agirlandherteacup #raisinglittlecheeks

Y’all, I am so excited! This past weekend I got to experience a special kind of coming home to myself that I only feel in nature, especially forests. 🌳 I started an amazing wilderness awareness/nature connection program with @wildintelligence. Every month, now through March, I will get to spend the weekend in the woods, deepening my knowledge of plants, learning to track mammals, improving my outdoor skills, and generally connecting intimately with nature. 🌿 I doubt I'll be posting much during the weekends (talk about a good chance to unplug), but I will share aspects of my journey. I can’t wait for more. 🌱💚🌱

With Echinacea. Endemic Tenessee variety I started from @strictlymedicinalseeds seed three years ago. My family comes from Tennessee where this flower grows wild. Notice the green head. Making two different tinctures using different strains of Echinacea to compare results.

My collective natural remedies for migraines and headaches. Migraine is something I have experienced from a young age. Over the years, I have tried many treatments, natural, medical and a combination of both. After thirty years I have found the following tools my best helpers. 1. As well as making candles for others, I use my own pure lavender candles and wax melts as soon as my aura arrives and especially in the evening before an attack really kicks in. I find the pure essential oil in my candles is naturally soothing, helping me to relax and achieve calmness. 2.Be alert to weather changes and stressful times. At these points I find two yoga positions really help me. Downward dog and Wide angle (standing forward bend) 3.Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and take medication if it’s for you. 4. A cool compress on my eyelids. 5. Lay down in a cool room ideally with a fan next to me. 6. Forgiveness. Most important to me is forgiving myself in the moments of being forced to stop and rest. Realisation that it is not my fault if I cannot achieve everything I had hoped to do that day for myself and others. So they are MY best remedies, what are yours?🤗

How beautiful are these medicinal plant cards from @mountainroseherbs ? 😍 I absolutely love these cards for brain stimulation + to help keep me on my toes at work when customers have questions about specific herbs. The plants featured in the above picture are : motherwort, foxglove, burdock, juniper, sage + elder, which are my favorites out of the whole deck! 🌿
