#morningdew on #roses Growing up in an apartment, I had very little contact with nature. But I had this book of roses with tons of detailed photographs. I’d pore through that thing constantly. In retrospect, I realize that even just looking at them on the page made me feel good/better. We have a few shrubs now, and I would put in more if our big dog didn’t snag herself on them. But I sure do love the ones I have. #plantallies #herbalism #herbalmedicine #roses #rose

The last few years, I've fallen unintentionally into herbalism. This is goldenrod, which I picked every chance I got this summer, and has been drying up 'til now. Makes a mild tea (pairs great with lemon verbena or mint) and FANTASTIC for kidney health. What started a few years back with a pot of spearmint has exploded into a small pantry of homegrown herbs. 🌱🍵💕

Hen of the Woods - Grifola frondosa . Maitake, Hen of the Woods, Sheep's head. I FOUND IT! . Here is the story of how I found my FIRST hen: I was in Atlanta and got to spend some time with Sarah of @rowanandsage doing a plant walk in her corner of the woods which was quite wonderful (stay tuned for a full story). On her recommendation, I visited another garden in Atlanta. When I was walking up to the garden house, I was stopped by a magnificent old oak tree. These mushrooms at the base caught my gaze, and I instantly knew what I found. I literally jumped in the air in excitement (the first of many jumps). Luckily there was a worker who gave me permission to harvest it! . Upon investigation of this mushroom in person, (I had only seen it in pictures) it is fantastically beautiful! The flock of fronds protruding from its core put on quite the display. If you look more closely, you will see the tiny pores dotting the entire underside of each "feather". . That evening I got to cook the mushroom and found that it absolutely lives up to its reputation as a choice edible. Beyond tasting amazing and being very easy to cook, it has incredible nutritional value. In 100g of mushroom, you will find 14% DV of riboflavin, 33% of niacin, 13% of copper, and a whole 281% of vitamin D! Beyond that, it contains a suite of amino acids, notably Tryptophan and Threonine. This wonderful wild food is nourishing both to your palate and your health! . Now for my favorite subject. Let's talk about the medicinal uses of this specimen! (at least some of them, there are a LOT) First, this mushroom is reportedly a good antioxidant It contains polysaccharides that have immunomodulatory properties (similar to Turkey Tails). A specific classification of polysaccharides, beta-D-glucans found in this mushroom are under study right now for there ability to stimulate the immune system to fight against cancer. I have also read studies reporting its efficacy in dealing with diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. . I was so ridiculously excited to find this mushroom. I wish you the very best on your hunt! Until next time friends! (I'll be eating more Hens) Be feral

Health Benefits of Black Cohosh☯️ @gangstaholistic Anti-spasmodic One of the earliest known uses of black cohosh was as an anti-spasmodic, which helps muscles and nerves function normally, preventing cramping and aching pains. This anti-spasmodic activity of cohosh’s active ingredients is coupled with natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory abilities, which makes black cohosh a one-stop herb for many aches and pains related with injury, muscle strain, chronic nervous tension, and other conditions. Anti-inflammatory Action The salicylic acid found in black cohosh is extremely useful as a natural anti-inflammatory substance, as salicylic acid almost directly mimics the activity of aspirin. Next time you’re feeling like your head is pounding or your bones are aching, try an herbal supplement of cohosh instead! For people who suffer from arthritis, black cohosh root can be a miracle cure, particularly when taken regularly. The anti-inflammatory nature of this herb also makes it useful for sore throats, congestion, and even high blood pressure. It works as a vasodilator, reducing the stress on the cardiovascular system and decreasing the chance of blood clots causing strokes or heart attacks. Reduces Menopausal Symptoms Research has linked the estrogen-like compounds in black cohosh to milder menopausal symptoms, as the major problem for women going through menopause is the stark drop in estrogen levels. Studies have linked the use of this cohosh to a reduction in hot flashes and night sweats for menopausal women, as well as lowered levels of stress and tension throughout the day. Improves Digestive Health The digestive capacity of black cohosh can help reduce flatulence, cramping, bloating & morning sickness. . . . . . #menopause #womenshealth #herbs #herbalism #herbalmedicine #herbalist #goldenseal #blackcohosh #beauty #estrogen #selfcare #selflove #acneskin #yoni #womenshealth #birthcontrol #acnetreatment #beamish #acnescars #dermatology #natural #acne #empoweringyouth #holistic #makeup #skincare #perimenopause #skincareroutine #gangstaholistic #naturalmedicine

This is a dream come true! Our Sea Kelp & Oceanside Botanicals Hydrating Facial Toner will be available just in time for winter! 🍷Learning Herbalism, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine is a lifelong journey, there’s no doubt about that. Applying what I’ve been learning to creating recipes for skincare and haircare is such a different level of intensity for me. 🥂I’ve wanted to create a hydrating face toner since the beginning of Isola Herbals. Ive worked hard, perfecting the ingredients and ensuring that it not only hydrates the skin, but that it feels good to use. I didn’t want a toner to feel sticky, or too astringent, but I did want it to work to tone the skin, and follow the balancing principals of alternative medicines. 💕Finally, after years of infusing oils and blending herbs, I’ve created a recipe that I just can’t wait to share with you! 🌺 The pretty pink colour comes from hibiscus and rose flowers, and the light texture comes from healing aloe vera. 🌴Stay tuned for its release in the next few weeks, and be sure to sign up for our VIP newsletter! Xoxoxo -Em 💕

Greetings from this lovely fall plant! Even though it’s technically still fall, it feels like it has already passed. The changing leaves remind me of all the parts of me that have changed color this year. Up until about a month ago, Jupiter was in Scorpio (my 4th house moon sign) which lead to a pretty transformative year to say the least • I saw my self in a new light. Experiencing the different shades of who I am. Some things bright, others dark. I’m excited to have this time to go inward and really reflect on the changes and evolutions I’ve made. Feeling the need to go inside before I really let the Jupiter in Sag come out to play • How do you go inward? Journaling? Walks? Meditation? Let me know your favorite ways to be with yourself ☺️ • • • • • • #Dawnofthemoonapothecary #plants #fall #herbs #herbalism #holistichealth #TCM #Astrology #jupiterinscorpio #jupiterinsagittarius #reflection #naturalliving #apothecary #homeremedies

Marshmallow Root - what is it? No it’s not the same as the airy, sugary puffed treat we are accustomed to (sorry to disappoint😆). This herb has been known for at least 2000 years. In folk medicine it was given to soothe and moisten mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts, and also as an external poultice. This plant is used in beverages, deserts, candies, cosmetics. Marshmallow root have been extracted in jojoba oil. It provides a relief from dry irritable conditions, treats wounds, bruises, scalds, and cools burns. Marshmallow root oil also acts as natural conditioner and detangler for your hair. It is a very light, fast absorbent oil without any scent. #marshmallowroot #infusedoils #herbalism #apothecary #herbalist #medicinalherbs #hairtips #hairoil #zerowasteliving #noplastic #beautyandhealth #jojobaoil #organicskincare #veganbeauty #greenbeautyblogger #botanicals #plantmagic #nature_brilliance #holistichealing #holistichealth

Breathe, drink, and eat thyme! Don’t wait for your respiratory system to get scratchy, cloggy, uncomfortable and unproductive. Herbs are our friends and better friends when we’re committed to using them preventatively. A thyme steam is my favorite this time of year when the radiators mercilessly strip my apartment of any moisture. But I also love a lemon-thyme infusion and roasted vegetables with generous handfuls of the creeping little plant rich in anti-microbial volatile oils. Don’t sleep on the common plants.

The wonderful, incredibly effective, herbal product *slippery elm powder*. Latin name Ulmus fulva. This remedy is a great alternative to any pharmaceutical antacid such as gaviscon, Rennies or prescription proton pump inhibitors (PPI's). The major bonus is that taking slippery elm powder has *no side effects* at all. It can be taken to treat heartburn and indigestion, even in pregnancy as well as being taken alongside pharmaceutical medication that may be causing heart burn. To take this remedy mix 2 teaspoons of the powder with water until it forms a gloop. Take it with water before each meal or use when symptoms of heartburn appear. So many people say they wish they knew this existed sooner! Please be aware that heartburn is a symptom of deeper digestive problems and you could benefit from seeing a medical herbalist to get down to, and resolve the root cause. S A C R E D • A D O R N M E N T S I first received my medicine pouch from one of my teachers a while back. I was venturing off to Indonesia on my own and she offered it to me as a source of protection on my journeys. It was one of the most beautiful gifts I had ever received! Over time I have collected feathers, plants, crystals and kept them in my pouch, close to my heart. I like to put new plants who I don’t know yet into my pouch and connect with them through my heart space, get to know them and their Spirit. I love creating medicine pouches for people and seeing their connection to them, the comfort they get from keeping their sacred items close, and the reverence in which they wear the pouches with. This pouch pictured is made from deer skin and the button is Turquoise from Nevada. Wonderful adornments hand crafted by me with a whole lotta Love, Respect, Reverence and Blessings!

We are not separate from earth. We are not separate from water. We are not separate from ether. We are not separate from fire. We are not separate from air. All of the elements within our world, and by world, I mean more than just this planet we call earth. Our “world” is absolutely everything that makes up the cells of the universal systems and it’s elements. With that said, I have to express some concern. While I believe that every female is born with gifts of magic and expressional healing, I’m growing worried that our society is taking the arts of the witch and then turning it into a market for greed, attention and disrespect. With all respect to our ancestral witches before us, we are not here to poke fun or use source as a way of fitting into a tribe that you think is “cool”. // Witches became a political hunt. You had healers using plants, the stars, the elements, the crystals, the power of voice to do so much good for others. Because women, and especially those from tribe used these practices to heal, the patriarchy looked at witches as a threat to society- or really the pockets of power. Being a witch today is incredibly political. It allows me and so many others to have the freedom to heal, express and give source. It allows us, especially my line of practice as an herbalist to go against the pharmaceutical industries and to give the human race the care that they need that they had so long ago. So, my final words here. Please do not buy into the schemes of the capitalistic society where beauty brands, the pharmaceutical industry, clothing companies etc.. are feeding into the practice of magic and practice of the witch. Call out your friends who are using this pursuit as a way to fit in. Encourage others to find their purpose and their why. Come into this space with respect, or else you are disrespecting my ancestors, my friends and myself. . . #Witches #Political #Protection #Capitalistic #Energy #Elements #World #Universe #Herbalism #Astrology #HighestSelf #Herbalist #AncientPractice #SagedFibers

Today I'm tincturing this beautiful South Carolina Lion's Mane mushroom for brain and nerve health. I give the tincture to my parents to preserve their brain function and memory. It seems to be making good strides on studies with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients and for nerve regeneration after damage has occured. I take it before teaching to keep my brain sharp for my students. ☆ I continue to be amazed by the power of mushrooms! Oh and this one tastes pretty freaking fantastic, too! Burdock root tincture. Burdock root has a lot of inulin in it. Inulin is a starch made of chains of sugars. Inulin is insoluble in alcohol. It forms this white paste in tinctures. So have no fear if your tincture looks like this. It is not mold, as can be assumed. Inulin is also indigestible by humans but our healthy gut flora love to eat it! When we consume the inulin it in turn improves our health by improving the health of our gut microbiome. When you use your tincture, shake it up so you also get some inulin. Inulin is water soluble so you can get it in burdock root tea and also by eating the root. Many other herbs with tap roots contain inulin. Elecampane, Echinacea and Dandelion to name a few. They can also have this white sediment show in their tinctures but I always see the most in Burdock root tinctures. #burdockroot #burdock #inulin #healthygut #tincturemaking #herbalism #plantwisdom #bitters #healthylife #digestiveaid

How gorgeous is this whipped tallow face mask 😍 this is probably my personal favorite skin moisturizer that we have! If you ever have any issues with redness- this will offer you immediate relief! It’s so deeply nourishing, I can’t even express how baby-soft my skin feels when I use it. I LOVE to be utilizing tallow in my skin-care because, due to the immense waste created by the meat industry- it is usually WASTED😳. So it makes me feel great to utilize something that would usually just be discarded. And not only that, it also is soo deeply nourishing and healing to the skin... on top of being infused with all these beautiful, skin- healing herbs ❤️ ( you can see the ingredients on the second pic 😉). I actually use this face mask as an “oil cleanser”, ie I apply it to my skin for fifteen minutes or so and use that to “wash” my face, then use the herbal powdered face wash to get off the excess oil. Leaves your skin feeling soooo good ❤️ #herbalism #allnatural #ayurveda #organic #energyhealing #energy #tallow #skincare #skinhealth #energywork #energy #reiki #crystals #herbs #healing

We had a wonderful time on Saturday talking all about infused herbal oils! We worked with dried calendula and chamomile. One of the core SOTY virtues is that taling care of our own bodies means taking care of the earth, which is why I make the effort to source local and organic herbs and food for my workshops and classes when available. Special thanks to @seedkeeping for the lovingly dried calendula that we used on Saturdsy! I also did demo on how to make salve with my own chamomile oil that I use frequently (ai have been usually chamomile for my daughter's eczema flare ups and diaper area since she was about 2 months old) and beeswax, and everyone went home with their own kit to make their own salve once their oil is complete. Thanks to all who were able to make it out!! The holiday season truly begins this week. And the beginning of winter at the solstice is approaching fast. Here in Salem it already feels like winter, so as we prepare to carry our internal fire and tap into our parasympathetic nervous systems to rest and digest, we look forward to the quietude of winter and get COZY. . . . I will once again be joining forces with @dark_moon_tarot and @thechaosfactorsalem at our new favorite haunt, @hive_and_forge , for another night of yoga, herbalism, tarot, and magick. We will celebrate solstice on 12/19 with vinyasa, restorative yoga, and sacred circle with the aids of plant magick and the wisdom of the tarot. Won’t you join us? Only 10 spots remain and we’re a month out. This will sell out. Grab them today! . . . This blue-flowering sage is native to South America and it's one of my favorite Salvias. It's a teensy bit spindly in its growth habit but it sends up tall flower spikes with these brilliant blue blooms that are so eye-catching! 💙 #pollinatorgarden #pollinatorplants

sᴛ. ᴊᴏʜɴ‘s ᴡᴏʀᴛ ❀ ✿ ʜʏᴘᴇʀɪᴄᴜᴍ ᴘᴇʀғᴏʀᴀᴛᴜᴍ, is a member of its own family, the ʜʏᴘᴇʀɪᴄᴀᴄᴇᴀᴇ, relatives to the mallows. In the northeast, we typically harvest the flowers + unopened buds in mid summer to late July. A favorite of mine to use during the winter seasonal shift as it aides in mild depression, especially in temporary conditions such as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Its power lies more in curbing inflammation of the nerves, which is caused by anxiety, tension, + irritability. It’s also a great external remedy where you’ll commonly find in many salves due to its power of relieving inflammation. One of my favorite aspects of sᴛ. ᴊᴏʜɴ‘s ᴡᴏʀᴛ is its radiantly red color it creates while infusing, which connects to its elemental association : fire 🔥 (along with time of harvesting + its benefits)
