#Repost @theb1m • • • Google's sister company Sidewalk Labs has released its initial masterplan for Quayside, a smart, five acre neighbourhood on previously derelict land on Toronto's waterfront. The mixed-use neighbourhood will contain 2,500 residences - 1,000 of which will be rented out at below market rates - office and retail space. The new district will eventually become home to Google's Canadian headquarters. The buildings, designed by Heatherwick Studio and Snøhetta, will be constructed with cross-laminated timber (CLT) and feature a pneumatic waste collection system. The neighbourhood will integrate smart technology, such as heated pavements, smart canopies and traffic, crowd and weather sensors that will help with the management of the area. #google #alphabet #SidelwalkLabs #toronto #Quayside #Canada #Ontario #LakeOntario #SmartCity #InternetOfThings #IOT #Snøhetta #Heatherwick #architecture #planning #construction #neighbourhood #MixedUse #Residential #CLT #Sustainability #timber #architecturelovers #urbandevelopment #building #architecture #engineering #urbancities FOR MORE FOLLOW THIS PAGES AND I FOLLOW YOU: -Postpage: @window_architectureengineering -Personal page&Company page: @katherine_architectdesigner @ingconsultor_arq

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick's London-based studio as a monument to Cape Town's industrial past @zeitzmocaa is the world's largest museum dedicated to contemporary art from Africa. Located on Cape Town's waterfront, Heatherwick's team hollowed out the inside of a historic grain silo building to create gallery spaces while retaining the spirit of the original structure.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #zeitzmocaa #mocaa #contemporaryart #museum #africa #capetown #heatherwickstudios #heatherwick #thomasheatherwick #africanart #archinterior #silos

The coal drop's yard at King's Cross terminus was built in 1849, designed by Lewis Cubitt as a storage space for London's coal. By 1856, rail was responsible for 30% of all coal trade, with goods like textiles, fish, fruit and bricks also being transported to the Great Northern Goods Station. By the 1980s, the goods yard and warehouses were instead used for transporting (suspectedly) illegal goods to people, with any London industrial premise being utilised for parties rather than as storage. King's Cross today is unrecognisable from how it was in the 1990s, but no less creative. The balance between the old and the new has been wonderfully captured, with the next chapter added to this space's story - and even, to London's story.⠀ ...⠀ @coaldropsyard #coaldropsyard #kingscross #industrialwarehouse #warehouse #heatherwickstudio #heatherwick #disused #illegalrave #londonpartyscene #london #londoncity #northlondon #cityoflondon #creativelondon #londonisopen #regeneration #redevelopment #repurpose

Design is defined as "a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system, or for the implementation of an activity or process". Design can be something original, or it can be a change to something existing, but is unambiguous in it being a method of visualisation. Here, Heatherwick Studio's architectural drawings for Coal Drop's Yard actually just speaks industry. The snaking trainlines, the sinuous arches, circular gasholders, little rectangular drops... the design showcases functionality and symbiosis: an efficiency. The redevelopment doesn't lose it's place amongst the other elements of industry in the area, instead these plans (of the immediate King's Cross area, the upper yard and the lower yard) allow you to see the breadth of the regeneration. It allows you to fathom the expanse of the original 19th century coal warehouses, and then also just how astounding this complex is now. A myriad of brands, makers and crafters have come together at Coal Drop's Yard to celebrate the effect industry has had on our lives, but how it's now our time to put things in motion for our future.⠀ ...⠀ @coaldropsyard #coaldropsyard #kingscross #heatherwickstudio #heatherwick #archicturaldrawings #architecture #drawings #redevelopment #regeneration #industry #londonindustry #industrialrevolution #warehouse #community #connectivity #londoncity #growth #repurpose

Heatherwick Studio’s conversion of the 19th-century coal warehouses in King’s Cross has a synchronicity with the old and the new; a balance that all of London has, even right here in our Walthamstow home. The roof not only offers a shelter for the shopping ‘street’ of the Coal Drop’s Yard development, but a sense of flow by opening up to link the space. Our city is always in flux, so perhaps further feeling of movement isn’t necessary. Yet, rather than a state of transience, the design creates a destination for shopping that’s fairly unusual to today’s general proceedings. A dynamic though sensitive restoration offering a reinvigorated perspective on King’s Cross. ... In the last two photos you’ll see where our new retail space will be. We’re in a nook where the bottom of two staircases meet, encased on all sides within this fresh community. As our brand and business grows, we’re looking to continuously welcome you into our spaces, talk with you, explore your story, chat about London, discuss the news. ... 📸 by Luke Hayes via @dezeen ... @coaldropsyard #coaldropsyard #kingscross #heatherwick #heatherwickstudio #development #redevelopment #regeneration #london #londonarchitecture #architecture #industrialbuilding #industrialrevolution #londonindustry #londoncity #londonkingscross #19thcentury #thomasheatherwick #shoppingcentre #blackhorselaneateliers
