(11/50) Saree of the day as part of #TamilNaduWeavesWeek is the humble, yet another abused name, the #Polycot saree from TN! Polycottons have both handloom and powerloom versions; even in powerlooms, there are varying degree of human interventions and they need not necessarily be interpreted as similar to machine-made Surat sarees! Polycotton handlooms have an interesting yet sad history, for it was what the weavers came up with when they could no longer afford the silk or the cotton traditionally used to hand-weave sarees! .
Polycottons are handwoven/powerloom woven extensively in Tamil Nadu, Telengana & Karnataka and the way it feels different to the touch is due to the fact that the mix of rayon:cotton can vary from anywhere between 20:80 to 80:20. Did you know the art silk that's used in well-known weaves like Ilkal & Chedi bhutta is an umbrella term for fibres like Rayon silk, viscose silk or bamboo silk? So in a way your Ilkal can be called a polycotton saree too! 😁 (Dont' want to bore you more and more with the details of Art silk and polycotton varieties)
Few characteristics of polycot sarees is how different it feels to touch and the fact that they have less absorbency to water. In addition, these are low maintenance sarees which at times have beautiful motifs that would give the expensive Kanchi cottons a run for their money! The colors of these sarees won't run as well and when i say low maintenance I mean absolute low maintenance; i even washed the handloom polycots that my mom gave me in washing machine and they did not even need ironing and they stay put, looking all majestic for the whole day.
There's also an interesting story behind handloom Polycots that are sold as Kadappa cottons about which i have written a couple of years ago (This post is updated in stories) 🙂 so yeah, that's how all Kadappa cottons are Polycots and not all Polycots are Kadappas! I hope I did not confuse you more than it already is confusing 🙈 This saree is Amma's that she bought from Cooptex as its' her most favorite workhorse saree to run errands in.
