Sitting in a dentist's chair (not necessarily a favorite place to be!) can be used for self observation and self awareness. :-) Here is the thought process that was triggered for one of our students: "Getting dental work has always been hard for me. Despite my experience with breathing exercises, it is still hard to stay calm and relaxed while someone else is drilling in my mouth. The last time it happened I felt especially stiff and tense. My jaw was completely numb, I did not "feel" anything, yet my whole body was in survival mode. I told myself to breathe. I started to feel a little calmer. And then out of the blue the dentist said: "Let me know if you feel a tiny sensitivity and I will just numb you more!" Oh wow, did she really say this?" I knew she was talking about my teeth, yet the words connected with something deeper, more profound in me. In my mind I answered: "Oh, no worries, you do not need to numb me, I am a pro at doing this myself. It is easy, I just close my heart, and whoops, I will not feel anything anymore." PAUSE PAUSE PAUSE. "Wait a second? Is this what a happy heart would say? And did this happened before, when the pain, emotional or physical was too strong to allow my heart to feel it?
Closing our hearts is a form of self- isolation, self- restriction, withdrawal and self-imprisonment. There is no proper communication with a closed heart, neither with myself nor with anyone else. A closed heart is also a hurting heart. It does not allow healing to happen, because it is hiding away the wound. Opening our hearts is a first step to heal old wounds and thus a prerequisite for a happy fulfilled life.
When is a good time to start practicing? I asked myself this question and could not help smiling when I thought of the answer: "Right now, In the dentist chair!" YES! So this is what I chose to do. I practiced opening my heart"
Do you need some support to gently learn how to open your heart?
We have a TONG YUAN Workshop coming up February 28th, and also a weekly pattern class to support this process.. info @upliftyourself.com
