Oh, you regal beauty. This is Tagetes ‘Cinnabar’ which, with its golden eye, deep red petals and piped gold edging, is about as close as you can get to a richly woven tapestry hanging in the courts of medieval royalty as you can get in a flower. Made all the better as it’s a kind of tall, scrappy annual marigold. Another Mexican daisy for the late summer border (confusingly Tagetes species get referred to as African and French marigolds – not to be confused with the entirely different pot marigold, Calendula, which you’ll find in your face cream. Well, it’s in mine...).
I always associate this with summer in the Barn Garden at Great Dixter, there usually seems to be a patch of it waiting for you as you descend the steps through the yew hedge along the front path, but I think I snapped this one in the High Garden.
