Maisa Mreiwed Migration 2018 22” x 30” (56 cm x 76 cm) Calligraphy Ink, Acrylic paint on Paper Montréal, Québec, Canada 🇨🇦🍁 . . . Migration (2018) tells the story of movement, memory, identity, dedication, planning, strength and new beginnings through the images of the beaver and maple leaf with ink on paper as its medium. The beaver and the symbolic designs that surround him signify my father’s journey to Canada (represented by the image of the maple leaf). My father, who is an engineer, has dedicated his entire life to his family, and every decision he has made has been to benefit us. This reminded me of the beaver that is “renowned for its building skills.... [and] carries with it a strong sense of home, family and domesticity” (Nozedar, 2010, p.217-218). As for the maple leaf, it is a symbol of Canada as seen on the flag as well as “fertility; growth; renewal” (Cooper, 1987, p. 96), and “the emblem of lovers” (Cooper, 1987, p.104).
