This China Aster Apricot Swirl Mix was hard to grow for us. The seeds were finicky about germinating and then without irrigation we couldn’t get the plants the water they needed for proper bloom. Nevertheless a few blossomed and we think you’ll agree they’re spectacular and well worth another shot in 2019, especially now that we have the water sorted out. It’s this kind of lush prettiness that people love in a bouquet. #workingonit . . #aster #asterflowers #chinaaster #cutflowergarden #flowerstagram #cutflowerfarm #flowerfarm #flowerfarming #pinkflowers #apricotflowers #flowergrowing #2018season

Of all 50+ types of flowers grown this year, the one we had a love/hate relationship with was gomphrena. Pros: It’s sturdy, flowering for an extended season in all conditions, plus it’s a useful, pretty filler for all sorts of bouquets. And it dries, so you can make long lasting decorations with it. Cons: You need to reach deep down to cut each thin flower stem separately, which adds up to hours of bending just to half-fill a harvest bucket. Also, turns out Shelby is slightly allergic to gomphrena, so working with it left uncomfortable marks on her arms. Next year we’ll test a taller variety to make harvesting easier. And Shelby’s banned from it :-). . . . #gomphrena #flowerfarm #flowerfarmer #flowerfarming #pinkflowers #cutflowergarden #cutflowerfarm #smallflowers #flowerstagram #whatcheerflowerfarm #dryingflowers

Dried dahlias 'Use every stem' is my mantra. It's something I've long been saying to everyone who's been on a workshop here or who is currently studying on The Business of Growing Flowers. When growing flowers is your business and provides the money to feed and house you, flowers not sold are waste. They may look pretty in the field but leaving them there is like putting fivers in the bin. So, when we have any spares they're dried and stored for sale. Dahlias are a generous plant and churn out the blooms in a good summer, they dry nicely and store well for use in wreaths or for use as a natural dyestuff. It may be winter and a snowstorm headed our way, but the dahlias are still making me smile ☺ #summerpreserved #driedflowers #useeverystem #thebusinessofgrowingflowers #learntogrow #flowerfarming #flowerfarmercourse #flowergrower #dahlias #zerowaste #britishflowers #scottishflowers #grownnotflown #scottishgrown #growninbritain #skills

If you are down on the Mornington Peninsula today, you may like to drop into Hillock Downes Produce Store at 151 Dundas St, Rye to see the collections stylish pots I’ve designed for Christmas gift giving! 🦋 Farm owner, Sally Matt, does a beautiful selection of organic beef - as well as a gorgeous range of earthy jams, chutney, honey and other treats - and her store is the perfect spot to show some pretty pots full of herbs and flowers as a sweet and sunny gift idea. 🐝 Every pot is brimming with something useful from the flower farm and edible from the kitchen garden. Geraniums, roses and hydrangeas are mixed with lavender, lettuce and herbs such as basil, dill, mint, parsley, rosemary, thyme ... just to name a few. 🍃🌿🌱 The real idea is to offer a gift that has a future long into the life of the recipient. And I love that idea! To give something that will grow and grow for years to come. Enjoy! I’ve been a little quiet over here ... missing the gardeny (I just made that word up) goodness and ability to put together sweet little mason jars of blooms. 💐 I’ve been working on other non-flower projects, yet still mentally contemplating the new year and all of the seed ordering that awaits me in the coming weeks. 🌸 What flower are you most excited to see in the new year? For me it’s Tulips, Zinnias, and Lisianthus. 🌷 . #slowflowers #locallygrown #flowerfarming #bouquet #masonjar #readyforspring

Ignore the ‘sell by’ dates on nasturtium seed packets: These seeds can last up to 5 years before using. Nasturtiums are not only joyful and edible, but they also attract aphids away from your other flowers. So, at the Farm we sow them amidst our cutting flower plants. There are so many little surprises happening in the seed houses! Excuse us while we talk about the sprouts like they’re a child or dog. 👶🐶 THEY ARE AO CUTE AND WE ARE SO PROUD. ∵ ∵ ∵ We know they’re going to grow up to do great things like be in a bridal bouquet or travel the world in a collection box. It’s crazy, it seems like we planted them just yesterday. THEY GROW UP SO FAST. 🌱😭 ∵ ∵ ∵ Don’t forget to tune in to Live From the Cooler today! We’ll be doing a laugh and learn about frogs and other random #flowerfarming nonsense so be on the lookout for our stories! ∵ ∵ ∵ #freshflowersrule #flowerfarm #farmerflorist #grower #plantingseeds #farmlifebestlife

Not such a pretty picture but just to show that flower farming is an all year round job - today’s task is to try and finish covering my field beds for the winter - it maybe 1deg but there’s no wind so hopefully the silage sheeting I use won’t be flying all over the place. And yes it’s plastic but I put it away in the summer and reuse each winter. And it’s a beautiful day so I’m loving being outside - thank you to Thames water for their hi-vis jacket (don’t ask) which is the warmest coat I have ever owned (or not owned as the case maybe) 🙊 . . #justdahlias #justdahlia #dahlia #dahlias #cafeaulait #weddingflowers #flowers #britishflowers #homegrown #grownnotflown #weddings #pickednotclicked #slow #slowgrow #flowersfromthefarm #flowerfarm #flowerfarming #northerflowerhouse #flowersofinstagram

Colours, trends and fashions When you're planning for which flowers to plant how do you decide what to plant? Do you follow what was ordered last season, look at what other people are growing, or do you decide what you think is going to be popular and grow that? This week's module has been looking at What to Grow, how trends work and how to find the best plants. Despite the Pantone colour of the year being announced as Living Coral, my best guess for the colours of 2019 is gold, dark grey and kingfisher blue. Currently only available in velvet cushions, but soon to be translated into flowers. Any suggestions??? #whattogrow #coloursfor2019 #trends #ihavethisthingwithcolour #dscolour #colourfulflowers #flowersforflorists #notaflowerinsight #thebusinessofgrowingflowers #planningfor2019 #flowerfarmer #flowerfarming #flowersforweddings #flowersforbrides #flowergrower #learntogrow #learnsomethinngnew

The Holiday Season is here and we are all decorated. I try and wait until a week or two before Christmas to get it all done so that we can really make it a condensed but magical time. It was really fun making all the exterior decorations including some of these “trees” made from branches, which is what we used to do when I was a kid.

Hope you follow along and comment your experience as a supporter of local business or as a farmer. These do not look like much but fingers crossed these hydrangeas, viburnum (snowball bush) and hypericum will look gorgeous when the time comes for them to flower. About 6 weeks ago I messaged a flower farmer who was giving up and selling all her plants. She had decided to go in another direction. We spent 3 days driving down digging them all up and another 2.5 days replanting (our lovely neighbour came and helped also) Not sure if they will all take but we are going to give it a go. Hopefully it will give us a bit of a head start as they are more established than the ones we planted last year. . . . . #flowerfarming #flowers #britishflowers #grownnotflown #herefordshire #plants #flowersfromthefarm #seasonalflowers #slowflowers #farmerflorist #twistedsisters_flowerfarm #twistedsisters_floraldesign @mauddesigns @flowersfromthefarm @twistedsisters_floraldesign #flowerstagram

I’m just loving December for the hydrangeas, as they are the flower than heralds in the summer! 💜Fabulous showstoppers, hydrangeas really are such a glamour-puss flower, they are always the life of any party, which sounds like someone I know! 💜 While I’m wild about them in white, prefer pretty in pink blooms to basic blue, it’s this rich purple colour that has me potting up pots full of this wonderful flower for the outdoor garden room. I hope you’re also enjoying hydrangeas as a part of your summer verandah and garden decor. Roses... Love them but it's my goal to learn more about them and start building up stocks in the next few years. Unfortunately, in this colder climate certain Roses don't do so well so that's something to consider when selecting varieties. This week has been extra busy for me but hopefully your week is smooth sailing. #roses , #flowerfarminglife , #flowerfarming #flowerfarmer , #grownnotflown

Popped over to the flower farm today for a mental check..... although its brown ( swipe left) its still giving. Instead of bees and butterflies its swarming with finches collecting seeds. We will get Christmas done and then it will be all sytems go with getting the barn up and making the farm its own. The farm has been secondary this year while we have been launching the new shop, although we got crops in the ground and did our best.... next year we will not only make the farm more productive, but gel the two locations together and make it as one! #flowerfarming #britishgrowers #britishflowers #britishflowerfarmers #sownnotgrown #workinprogress #suffolkbusiness #southwold

So it turned out a little something like this. I really enjoyed the process, because at this point it is all intuitive. With no formal training I have no rules to follow. It was interesting to see how and where I would have "improved" the bouquet adding different textures and tones, but as I haven't found anywhere I can buy flowers at cost price per stem I don't think that's going to be possible, at least not at this time of year.. (prepping the garden currently!) So for now my creations remain visions. As an expression of creativity it is an absolute joy to work with living material , and to have the time to just play. If the trip to the market has taught me anything , it is that British grown flowers are the absolute way forward. I was not particularly inspired or drawn to anything I saw there, maybe it was just the day. It also taught me that I'm a morning bird, the 4am start wasn't so bad ! #flowers #flowerarranging #flowerfarming #creativity #roses #blueiris #bouquets #hopefullyillgetthrhangofhashtags #dontthinkiwilleverstoptakingthemickoutofhadtags #hashtag #flowermagic

Some color for this snowy day! Recently I have been ridiculing myself for having 2000 pictures of flowers and my garden this year on my phone, (no self control 😅) but I was then gifted a very special box of my grandparents photos and what did I find? Hundreds of pictures of my Grandpas garden and flowers from every garden he visited! Swipe to see him standing in his crowning achievement 👨🏻‍🌾 He passed away before I began flower farming so I was totally blown away to find these 😍 but I guess now I know where this excessive habit came from and I feel an even deeper bond with him now. 🌻 #grandpasarethebest #grandpagardener #familyflowers #gardening #flowerfarming #familyofgardeners #summerflowers #remembersummer #sunshine #color #forarainyday #growingflowers #ogdenflowers

A totally underrated foliage.....Basil! This here is Mrs Burns Lemon and it’s a prolific grower here in our sub tropical climate. All grown from direct sowing of seeds. It has a heavenly citrus basil scent and I think the floral industry needs to appreciate this guy more. Want to grow this unusual basil variety?? I’ll be stocking seeds on my online store in the new year.

The nestling in of the Tulip Praestans Fusilier- a scarlet showstopper come spring. Wobbly at best, a formation of transformation just waiting to happen. . Tulip trenches. 1. Dig your trench roughly 6 inches deep. 2. Mix in a bit of compost. 3. Then plant your bulbs roughly 3 times as deep as they are tall. When they’re securely in place, water them, then back fill the trench. . Tulip bulbs can be planted very close but make sure they’re not touching, think egg-carton. Plant in October or November (or December) when the weather cools down. They need full sun and drainage, but other than that they are a very easy, and ridiculously lovely addition to the cut flower patch. It has been all about the roses this week. They are very exposed where they are and we have planted some willow to protect them but it is not established enough yet. We have cut them pack this week to try and stop them getting wind rock and damaged. Did any of you leave your dahlia tubers in the ground to overwinter? We thought we’d try leaving one hoophouse full in the ground but then dug them all out after this happened. We know @lovenfreshflowers is leaving some in the ground and she put leaves on top and then a tarp over everything to help keep rain off. Will be anxious to see how they fare.
