I can’t wait to see these China Aster blooms later this season #chinaaster. I’ve been hand weeding around the baby seedlings every few days to give them a good start. They’re visibly growing every day! #flowerfarming #chemicalfreegardening

A perfectly rowdy poppy on this fine morning. This poppy is proud - she struggled to grow, made it through the twists and turns of snow and hail, and is finally getting her moment to shine. May we all be celebrated for our uniqueness. Go be a rowdy poppy in this world. Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

What is Father's Day for someone like me, whose father died over 40 years ago? A day to recognize what it means that a man I knew for only 16 years, who wasn't always easy to know, continues to be a part of the fibers of my life every day. It is a day to honor the gifts of determination, strength, humor, intensity and courage he cultivated in me. It is a day to recognize the struggles he faced, of which I had little understanding as a child. It is a day for gratitude to be alive, and a day to thank all who stumble through the joys and hardships of fathering, including those who fall... #fathersday #fathers #womenfarmers #gardentherapy #flowerfarming #santcruzflowers #floretworkshop2019

The desire that humans have for flowers is old. ⁣ ⁣ Remnants of flower petals have been found in several ancient grave sites by archaeologists, dating back to pre-historic times. Detailed descriptions can be found in Greek & Roman mythology and Chinese writings and Egyptian Hieroglyphics both refer to the beauty and symbology of flowers. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve always loved exploring the origin behind the things we take for granted, and the story of humans fascination with flowers is no different. ⁣ ⁣ The Tussie-Mussie from the Victorian era were the first known small hand held bouquets that were given to convey different feelings and messages to the receiver. Each flower represented a different meaning. Among them: ⁣ ✨Roses for love⁣ ✨Violets for faithfulness and modesty ⁣ ✨Daffodils for chivalry and unrequited love⁣ ⁣ We also make up our own symbology based on our own experiences. Both conscious and unconscious. For me, Gardenias smell nostalgic, almost like missing someone, but I don’t know why. ⁣ What flowers transport you? ⁣ ⁣Pic by @lillyatdawn ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #⁣botanicalbliss #underthefloralspell #botanicalwomen #flowerfarming #ancientorigins #primaldesire #botanyofdesire #farmerflorist #organicgardening #northernriversnsw #tussiemussie #traditionalcrafts #flowercrafts #roses #smallfarm #oldstories #safetosniff

Had a silly moment the other evening while trying to reach some Penny Grass. My wellingtons started to sink into the mud and I ended up sitting in a big puddle trying to get back up. I had to turn onto my hands and knees and ring Mr Leafy Lane to pull me out, he eventually managed to struggle to reach me. He pull his neck out doing to much digging and weeding last week for our open gardens; and found it difficult to heave my sinking feet out. We ended up having a good old laugh at our predicament. #flowersfromthefarm #mudgloriuosmud #flowerfarming #grownbyme #valeofbelvoir #bylocal

I’m feeling better! That’s what digging in the dirt from 9-5 will do for ya! “It might seem crazy what I'm 'bout to say. Sunshine she's here, you can take a break. I'm a hot air balloon that could go to space. With the air, like I don't care baby by the way... Huh, because I'm happy Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof. Because I'm happy Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth. Because I'm happy Clap along if you know what happiness is to you. Because I'm happy Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do!” #flowerfarm #flowerfarming -Pharrell Williams

Voltage Bearded Iris. It's more of an apricot color but in different angles it does look a bit orangey. 🌸Tackling more dahlias planting until the rain started. 450 down....1/2 done. Hopefully, all go as planned. We're at the mercy of Mother's Nature these days. But still psyched for what's to come. 🌸Enjoy a snuggly Saturday. Yup, going under.... #beardedirises , #apricotiris , #orangeiris , #irises , #slowflowers , #localgrowers , #flowerfarming , #flowerfarmer , #buffalolove , #hamburgny , #localblooms #madelynsfloraldesignsandfarm

I have always loved to have flowers in the house. Before I started growing it was a treat I allowed myself as I checked out of the grocery store or Home Depot. Now I am a big believer in the grow local movement...field to vase. Flowers nurtured and grown right here in Orange or where ever your hometown is. I am hoping that when this new adventure is completely up and running, my Orange County friends will also become champions of locally slow grown flowers as well. One of the best parts about being a grower is now I don’t worry about grabbing a bunch at the store, I try and make sure I have left overs. #mastiffphotobomb #thatslemonadelucy #farmdog #slowflowers #growlocal #grownnotflown #flowerfarmer #flowerfarm #zinnia #flowerfarming #cagrownflowers #flowersofinstagram #cutflowergarden #igrewthat #growninorange #thicketflowers #floretseeds #floretworkshop #leftoverflowers

There’s a thousand ways I’m sure to do this faster. This seed saving. But there’s something about cutting them stem by stem—flower by flower. And on this beautiful Saturday morning a mind can slow and listen to the bird’s praise songs just a little longer. #seedsaving #flowerfarming #workhardstayhumble #godmadeafarmer

It is going to be another beautiful day for shopping at the Georgetown/Scott County farmers market! Remember, tomorrow is Father's Day. What a fun evening! Thank you so much to everyone that came out, and the biggest 🌼Thank You🌼 to Charlotte Ann for helping with customer service! She personally shook the hand of every one of our younger customers, and instructed them on how to properly cut flowers - she’s a natural! If you missed us this evening we’ll be open tomorrow (Saturday) morning from 8-11 am! * * * * #littleriverfarmpeople #flowerfarming #slowliving #ayearinflowers #folklife #slowflowers #locallygrownflowers

Spend the day weeding the perennial garden, can you spot the Globe Thistle in the first photo? It is very important to weed newly installed plants, the weeds will out compete my plants for water and sunlight. Blacky the farm cat hung out and bothered me the entire time!

I mean, what’s all the darned fuss about, anyway?!! Well, quite frankly...This! We just want to pick flowers like this and walk through fields like this! Is that too much to ask?! And we want to let people come here and do the same!!! The world, the pollinators, and the people need flowers galore these days! More and more flowers! And we’re doing our best to provide what we can in our own way! It starts with seed, then seedlings, then planting them and that’s precisely where we’re at! And then...there will be summer days filled with THIS! 💕💕💕💕💕🌻🌻🌻🌸🌸🌸🌼🌼🌼🌱🌱🌱🌻🌻🌻 #flowerfarming #werkwerkwerk I heard a good one today: “No mud, no lotus.”

I don’t want the day to end without giving a big shoutout to a slice of heaven on earth. @irvingtonspringfarm is a gem! Today while we were there for our photo shoot I watched Ben and Kay work nonstop. It was a good reminder for me that wonderful things don’t just happen overnight. We see the gorgeous blooms for sale in the cooler and forget that they are just dried up seeds without the insane amount of work wrapped up in each petal and leaf. #businessgoals #ourlynchburg #lynchburgva #hardworkers #onedayatatime #boutiquephotoshoot #flowerfarming #collaboration

The full picture... stuff is happening. This feels like such an accomplishment! It took three people three hours to set up these hoops on top of the previously installed landscape fabric. Four 75ft rows, 64 four foot hoops, netted and ready! #supportsystem #flowerfarming

Wow! A week away plus nice weather = flowers galore! . . Look at these fun lillies! . . This last week was packed full of traveling, meeting new people and adding to my flower addiction. I love being able to shop at different nurseries and bringing home little gems. Chris usually has me shop for fruit trees for him, while I shop for flowers. . . This trip I brought back peonies, ordered root stock for next year, found another rose bush and notated different irises I want. . . Now it's time to start making some bouquets with all the blooms I picked.

This pink ageratum is so fun in bouquets. The #flowerfarming journey is quite new, but this one is a winner.
