⁣Dizengoff Circle, the epicenter of the historic 'White City' area of Tel Aviv. ⠀ ⠀ The city's first Mayor, Meir Dizengoff organised a competition in 1934 for designs of a municipal square, which was to be named after his late wife Tina, following the initial urban city plan laid out by Sir Patrick Geddes in 1925.⠀ ⠀ The successful applicant, Genia Averbuch won with her uniformed modernist design where all the facades of the buildings within the square were aligned, regardless of their different functions; as cinemas, shops, offices and residential apartments, with most sections completed by 1938. Although the idea for an underground car park was never made into reality, the large roundabout was fashioned into a garden with central fountain where locals would stroll and socialise. ⠀ ⠀ #swiperight to see the square before it was built, literally on the sand, as well as Averbuch's original design I discovered in the archives of @bauhauscenter . And also why it was known locally as the 'etoile' of Tel Aviv, reminiscent of Paris's Arc de Triomphe. ⠀ ⠀ (FYI, I am back in the UK!, finally catching up on Instagram now!)⠀ ⠀ #dizengoffsquare #geddesplan #dizengoffsquare #geniaaverbuch #femalearchitects #modernism #bauhaus #telaviv #israel #1930s #whitecity #architecture #citysquare

This is Ingrid Wallberg (1890-1965), the first Swedish female architect to open her own office. She was born into a family where women were supposed to marry and stay at home. But Ingrid managed to have her father surrender and she later lived a life full of adventures. She moved to Paris with her 11-year old son and worked for Le Corbusier before returning to Sweden where she continued to push architectural boundaries.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #femalearchitects #ingridwallberg #lecorbusier #swedisharchitecture #nevergiveup

“WHO IS THE ARCHITECT?” is a question you often hear people ask when they are amazed or appalled by a building. As architects and designers, we would often come across clients who will alter our designs or builders who will not build what we design. | Pay attention to your designs and pay even more attention during construction by supervising it. Feel free to have a clause in your contracts to indemnify you when those buildings aren’t done according to provided documents. | Before they ask who the builder or client is, they ask who the architect is. #wolaafrica

⁣⁣"I used to not like being called a 'woman architect.' I'm an architect, not just a woman architect. The guys used to tap me on the head and say 'you're OK for a girl.' Today I celebrate Zaha Hadid, a Iraqi British architect (1950-2016) who was arguably the contemporary world’s greatest female architect. She was famously called the “queen of the curve” because of how her designs seemed to bend steel, concrete and glass into unusually flexible shapes and spaces. She created some of the world’s most iconic buildings, from the Guangzhou Opera House to the Hungerburg station in Austria to the Heydar Aliyev Center in Azerbaijan and much more. Her flowing forms and daring aesthetic left an indelible, brilliant mark on the world - as proved by the numerous awards and prizes she won over her illustrious career, which was sadly cut too short when she passed away at age 65 in 2016. Her designs are inspiring, uplifting and a testament to the unlimited power of human creativity! #zahahadid #architecture #greatarchitects #femalearchitects

Introducing Erin Butler, AIA, licensed architect 5 years of architecture school, 3.5 years and countless hours of studying, and 52.5 hours of taking exams later, I can officially say I’m done with my architecture exams as of April 27, 2019. I wouldn’t be where I am without Rush, my family, and my favorite bubble tea at Mr. and Mrs. Tea, the most productive study snack. Onto the next adventure! #ncarb100

B A L A N C E I N D E S I G N... | Balance in design creates order, harmony and it’s aesthetically pleasing. We have three (3) main balance in design: • Symmetrical • Asymmetrical • Radial | SYMMETRICAL This is when elements are arranged on both sides of an axis in the same way. It is very attractive and would always be interesting. ASYMMETRICAL Simply put, it is the lack of symmetry. Hard to pull off but creates balance when done correctly. This type of balance is attention grabbing and thought provoking. Not a commonly used type but when pulled off well is very interesting as well. RADIAL Like the name suggests, it’s any type of balance based on a circle. This type can have the other two balances infused in. | Which type of balance do you love and prefer working with? Will you try another type? Let us know. Tag us in your designs. #wolaafrica

Donna Clare and her team at @Dialogdesign started their research for the @royal_alberta_museum by interviewing Albertans. Asking them questions like: what does Alberta mean to you and what are some of your strong associations with Alberta. Clare wanted the space to be inclusive and welcoming, not intimidating. “The design is really about digging deep and understanding both the role of the museum and also its place in our city fabric.” Read our story about the women who designed the largest museum in Western Canada through the link in bio.

Introducing Cherri Pitts of @studiocarch as this week's #WIAWednesday !⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ "I fell in love with architecture in grade school-around age 10. I remember the day vividly. A classmate’s father was an architect, and he visited our class to talk about his trip to Paris and architecture. He presented a slideshow of the incredible buildings and places he had visited. I was captivated by the images."⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ "In that moment, I knew I was going to be an architect. ⁣I feel very fortunate to have found my calling at such a young age and to have stayed the course. I committed to Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA because of the 5 year Architecture program they offered and started my Architecture career there in my home state." ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ "After 13 years, my spouse was transferred to Birmingham and I closed my firm to start a new adventure and have never looked back. I formed Studio C Architecture several years after we moved here. Birmingham has been a great love for me, and I feel like I have really come home to a place that embraces history and celebrates Architecture.⁣⠀ It has been a wonderful journey, and I hope many more women choose the path of architecture."⠀⁣⠀ ⠀⁣⠀ To view more of her work visit www.studiocarch.com ⁣⠀ #weloveourmembers #aiabham #WIAwednesdaybhm #womeninarchitecture #architecturematters #archilovers #designmatters #designinspiration #architectsofinsta #womanpower #womenempowerment #studiocarchitecture #womenincharge #femalearchitects #residentialarchitecture #residentialdesign

Tuesday is the new Monday😀😀 At the gym the other day, while discussing with an elderly lady and another member, she got to know I was an architect and exclaimed "no wonder your hair is like this 😑😐...lol, I woke up that morning, loosened the twisting I did the night before and headed to the gym. Truth is I'm very adventurous with my hair, although I don't visit the saloon often, but when I do, it should be a refection of me or my alter ego(yea I have one😁) that is creative, spontaneous, witty, classy. I've found out most architects have similar attributes. Does your profession have an influence on who you become or your type of person have an influence on the profession you choose, let me hear your views. I hear medical doctors are one of the most caring, sensitive people. I agree. #femalearchitects #architectsinnigeria #architect #dreamhome #lekkihomes #bizhub #archipreneur

Our #WCW today is GRACE ANANG AISO | Architect at Christian Faith Ministries. | In an interview with our founder, she mentioned that Architecture has been interesting and a bit challenging as well. When asked if female architects had equal opportunities as their male colleagues, she responded, “Absolutely not, perhaps, culture has influenced our perception of a woman's capacity and capability. While she loves both designing and supervising the execution of her designs, she explained that she doesn’t think we have enough mentoring for female architects in Nigeria. | She expressed that she will personally assume, it's because of the prejudice experienced by women in practice, may not necessarily be from male counterparts but from even skilled workers like masons; that has made so many women who study architecture and go to graduate not practice. “A woman's tenacity is tested under such conditions” | “Architecture is difficult on a scale of 10 with 10 been the highest, but the satisfaction you get when you overcome makes all the stress worth it. My one challenge would be having to make my voice heard and followed.” | Awarenesses creation, education on practice ethics and an overview of what is attainable in the world of architecture were some of her expectations from @wolaafrica. To those who want to pursue a career in architecture she advised to be tenacious, it will help you stand even as the going gets tough. | Grace also shared with us that architecture has influenced her in every area - “spatial arrangement, environmental and human psychology, colour combinations, fashion design, catering, decoration, literally in every aspect of my life, all in positive ways.” She also agreed that most female architects go on to be successful in other areas of design. | Her last words were, “An architect can only be better and get better in whatsoever they choose to do.” | Story and 📸: @gracedanang Interviewed and collated by: @wolaafrica
