“My evidence - such as it is - is always intimate. I feel this - do you? I’m struck by this thought - are you?” - Zadie Smith, Feel Free.
Happy Friday, everyone! We are heading into a long weekend here in BC, and I’ve kicked it off with a haircut after my work meetings 💇🏻♀️. Since I’m feeling under the weather, I won’t be making too many other plans besides seeing friends and laying on the couch reading the new paperback release of Feel Free.
What a serendipitous follow-up read to Michelle Obama’s Becoming, which I just devoured, since Smith looks at these cultural essays as a time capsule written during the Obama administration that we can choose to read as a reminder, tool or entertainment as we see fit.
She’s talked about the expat lens she views the US from, and it led me to question the differences between dual-love and dual-citizenship. There are certain places that I have such deep love for that, even though I’m not a citizen, I feel culturally and intimately connected to. They include the US, London, Japan and Hong Kong. How about you? 🌎
