Im not usually one for sight seeing but today I walked into a Dairy Queen. A Hungry Jacks-like establishment I’ve seen in the movies serving fried chicken alongside loaded fries covered in gravy + cheese curd, and beef burgers and soft serve ice creams on tap like craft beers and “pop” in cups big enough to muzzle a horse with. Then, as if that wasn’t enough to get the heart clogged there was a whole refrigerated wall to the left hand side of me dedicated to LARGE FROSTED DECORATIVE CAKES like the one Arnie ruins in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape just before his birthday party. Swimming along with me in Dairy Queen were were many legged versions of Tilikum. Some Tilikums were dressed like they were out for a nice Thai dinner. Suffice to say I’m a bit bewildered by urbanised Canada. Here’s a pile of wood in a creepy forest when I was feeling much more at one w Mumma N. Looking forward to getting back in the stickarooos and eating off the land again tomorrow! 🌲 . . . #canada #princeedwardisland #forest #woods #local #organic #farmtofork #slowliving #bearcountry #wanderlust #travel #recipes #inspo #foraged #healthy #healthyliving #cleaneating #nutrition #foodporn #buslife #tinyhouse #solarpowered #spring #offthegrid #vanlife #homeonwheels #bushome #glamping #housebus

The beauty of nature as rice farmers harvest their late summer crop in the Sacramento Valley just days before the official start of Fall. This is a sacred place for those who value the protection of wildlife and the environment.

Consciousness of what we put into our body and a commitment to providing ourselves clean nourishment - is a primal act of self care. Supporting our local farmers is essential to that commitment. Elated with all the vendors and delectable fare @pcg_charlotte so much so that food never sat long enough for a photo op. #DYK ? Many small and mid-sized farmers lack the capacity to access retail and commercial markets on their own. Food hubs offer a solution by providing aggregation, distribution, and marketing local food for farmers. According to the USDA, "food hubs make it possible for many producers to gain entry into new larger-volume markets that boost their income and provide them with opportunities for scaling up production." By choosing to get healthy food from 4P, you are helping and strengthening local food systems. 🌿

And that's a wrap! The Casa Breau 2018 garden is officially tilled and ready for winter. ☺️ I have always been a huge fan of veggie gardening, but this year it was ESPECIALLY important for me to be consistent with my garden for a number of reasons: . 1️⃣ GROUNDING. Through my healing journey, one of the simplest ways to bring the power back into my own hands is by putting my feet on the ground. A good dose of negative ions from Mama Nature herself with my feet planted... It changes everything! Don't believe me? Try it for yourself and see if you notice a shift in your energy! . 2️⃣ Vitamin D! The good old ☀️sunshine vitamin is never far from my garden, and time spent plucking weeds, planting and watering directly benefits my immune system by loading me up on this crucial vitamin. . 3️⃣ Microbes: 🐛 Did you know that a tablespoon of dirt contains more microscopic critters than there are humans on the planet? Insane! There really is some truth to the phrase, "Let them eat dirt," because those diverse little fellas are like nature's probiotic. And YEP - Gardening totally impacts your microbiome. Why do you think they say that statistically speaking, gardeners live longer? 😉 . 4️⃣ VEGGIES! I mean of COURSE I do it so I can walk into my back yard, grab myself an organic head of lettuce or some broccoli or tomatoes, bring them inside and prepare a meal with them! Doesn't get much more fresh than that! 🥦 . 5️⃣ Nate: 👦 Nothing feels quite as blissful as watching Nate proudly pick tomatoes and beans from the garden that he helped to water and grow! These are truly life lessons I hope he carries with him always. 💜 . 6️⃣ LESSONS: Each year, my garden teaches me something new. Patience is a big one, as we watch everything grow with anticipation. I also had a groundhog "situation" for a solid week this year, followed by an infestation of caterpillars that LOVE cruciferous veggies! To be honest, I love all of the uncertainties that come with gardening and all of the new insights it brings to life, change and growth. Yep, even the groundhog was a fun one to figure out! 🐀 . Now.....Only 8 months to go until our next planting season! 😅 Did you have a garden this year? If s

Our first stop: the Stockton Blvd Corridor. Home of Little Saigon and The Little Vietnam Plaza. Sacramento’s established enclave of Vietnamese restaurants, markets, and small businesses. We stopped by Huong Sen Tofu for some freshly made and fresh-tasting vegan Vietnamese spring rolls. Some of the absolute best we have ever tried 😋👌

my afternoon looked like: food, food, wine, bluegrass break, cocktail, food, cocktail, wine, food, bluegrass, brink of a food coma. farm to fork in the garden is in the running for the best foodie event i’ve been to all year: such a fun, delicious afternoon showcasing charlotte’s food, farmers and community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ plus, isn’t this panna cotta (with smoked @jandjfamilyfarmsc honey, lemongrass jam and flowers) picture perfect? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #farm2fork2018 #sponsored

Our favorite dish of the @pcg_charlotte #farm2fork2018 was panna cotta from a bbq restaurant 😳 @sweetlewsbbq smoked honey (smoked.honey.) from @jandjfamilyfarmsc and added it to a @hickoryhillmilk panna cotta with @jandjfamilyfarmsc lemongrass jam and farm flowers 🌾🥛🌱🐷 It was so great to see the partnerships between local farmers and restauranteurs ❤️ Thanks to @pcg_charlotte for letting us experience the food love at this event. We already can’t wait for next year 💫

Grass-fed? Nope! This is called Forage Fed/Finished. Iron clay peas being consumed by steers fattening up is an understatement. Going to add 10 more steers next week because there is to much forage. What they don't eat will be trampled in the ground to add carbon, organic matter and release nitrogen as it is consumed. We will then no till our winter/spring forages into the litter left behind. #knowyourfarmer #eatlocalsc #yeahthatgreenville #iongreenville #farmfresh #farmtofork #farmtotable #organicmatter #sustainablefarming #carbonfarming #carcassquality #farmtotable #eatlocalridebikes #educateyourself #foragefedbeef #foragefinishedbeef #grassfedbeef #ironclaypeas #forages

Yesterday we butchered 22 chickens, roosters and some old hens. Today I took the meat off the bone and am working on getting it all canned. I have 7 quarts done and cooling, another 7 in the canner and some meat left in the refrigerator... probably enough for 3-4 more quart jars. Its so convenient to have this meat in the pantry and makes for quick and convenient meals. The bones I saved for stock that I will work on later this week. #canning #homestead #homesteading #ourhomestead #growyourown #preserving #jars #farmtofork #farmtotable #chicken #farmfresh #pressurecanning

On the carrot harvest with @mickyaddy today. We planted these with @williamsalter1 and @mckeinze97 in @theledbury compost made with the waste from their kitchen. Sustainable, full circle food. No-dig gardening has given us lots of nice straight carrots. We'll be pickling some of these baby nantes carrots for the canapés on our vegan pop up restaurant at @cafefoy. This week’s haul from @dallasfarmersmarket Melons (sweet AND bitter) and okra from @bragafarmsdfw and pears from @marketprovisionsco 🍈🍉🍐 So pleased to have found watermelon this late in the season, I haven’t even seen them in the grocery store recently! The other melon is a Brazilian honeydew, so I’m excited to try that. I learned about bitter melon from @be.spiced and will use her recipe first, although I was recommended to take it as a juice as well. Looks like I’m eating okra everyday this week🤣I’m sad to say the last okra I brought home went bad so I am very determined for this to all get eaten. Lastly, I found the pears at @marketprovisionsco which I just learned is open 7 days a week. Good to know in case I need to re-up on local organic produce mid-week 👩🏼‍🌾📍🥗 Hope y’all are having a bountiful Sunday as well! Oh, and the total of all this was $20 . . . . . . . #farmersmarket #dallasfarmersmarket #eatlocalgrown #eatlocally #zerowastevegan #zerowasteliving #eatgoodfeelgood #iamwellandgood #nosingleuse #plasticfreeproduce #votewithyourdollar #plasticfreeproduce #farmersmarkets #farmersmarkethaul #farmersmarketfresh #farmersmarketfinds #farmersmarket #knowyourfarmer #farmfresh #farmtofork #nosingleuse #packagefree #zerowastelife #zerowasteliving #savethefood #nowaste #sundayvibes #farmersmarketsunday #sundayfarmersmarket #weekendvibes

When the first day of fall is a rainy Sunday it is the perfect opportunity to start cooking my soups again! I pour myself a glass of wine, put on some music and get chopping. This afternoon I made 2 soups (details in stories) which will feed my family for the week and beyond using the fresh ingredients I picked up at the farmers market.
