Yesterday I witnessed my first peaceful protest, and here are some of my favourite snap shots. They were raising awareness for the dangers of fast fashion, but it made me think about another issue. ~ I met no other climate scientists there. I think too many of us are afraid that observing an event like this would somehow discredit us, but sitting in laboratories behind closed doors is not the whole solution. ~ We need it all. The science, the activism, the policy changes, the lifestyle changes, the mentality changes. They are all fundamental puzzle pieces in saving our environment from further destruction. ~ Event by: @extinctionrebellion

One of the best things we ever did was build a pond. It doggedly marks out the seasons for us, taking us on dependable journey from birth through to resting every year, but for how much longer? Right now, I know it’s February as I’m lulled to sleep every night by the croaking chorus, look down on a pond boiling with frogs, and stumble on amplexing groups as I garden; this pair in the woodpile by our french windows have been in this position for 24 hours! If you live with what you love you’re more likely to long to protect it. Life is wonderful, creatures and plants are amazing; let’s limit the damage now. 15th April is the start of international rebellion week; we all need to rise up in love to keep the temperature down. #frogs #wildlife #pond #gardenpond #wildlifepond #amplex #spring #nature #naturalcycle #consciousliving #livegently #greenlife #climatechange #climatecrisis #extinctionrebellion #climatechangeisreal #planetearth #gaia #seasons #tellthetruth #rebel #rebelforlife #rebelfortheplanet #rebelforlove

A lovely spring day in February just goes to prove our point. So grateful to all the amazing humans and some non-humans of the rebellion that came to swarm #LFW yesterday starting with a warm up outside the #victoriabeckham show, moving onto blocking The Strand and then the #Tate Modern where #burberry was situated. THIS IS NOT A DRILL! We have very almost run out of time to avoid runaway climate change. Resource scarcity is looming. We will look back and wonder why we used up precious resources on new clothes. The fashion industry uses 1.2 billion tonnes of co2 a year, the same as Russia. It takes between 10-20,000 litres of water to make a pair of jeans and less than 1% of clothing is recycled into new clothing. Despite the predicament of ecological catastrophe, consumption is still increasing - it’s doubled in the last 15 years whilst utilisation has dropped by 36%. We’re not blaming London Fashion Week or the BFC but we demand that the industry uses its influence as an engine for massive cultural change. All culture, energy and resources must be directed towards saving this planet. Please wake up to the emergency and help us build momentum for the launch of the rebellion so that we can pressure government for the systemic change needed to save what can still be saved. Join us on 15th April. Take the week off work to save your future. Thank you all those that gave their energy yesterday @tamsinomond @clarefarrell @skeapsnaps @earthwanderess @kendallshirlee @mollvai @yourstylishpal @circular.vision and thank you so much to those that engaged with us @mrspress @timblanks @phoebeenglish @techstyler @nellyroselondon @charlottegush @orsoladecastro @theseagull 🙏🙏🙏 but I must mention that the majority of the industry were icy cold and unwilling to engage in any way, including some prominent names and this just goes to show how much more needs to be done. #lfw #extinctionrebellion #swarming #sustainablefashion

Heather mandala. Sometimes I feel we need to reach out and see things through the eyes of Gaia. So much climate change and crisis, political systems falling apart at the seams. Everything and everyone revealing their true natures. Disguises coming down. We have 12 years in which to stop this madness for the sake of the children. Please think about your actions and their impact on the planet. Do you need to fly/drive so frequently? Do you plant trees? Do you opt for public transport instead of the car? Do you have renewable energy in your home? Do you shop locally? Are you ditching single-use plastic? Do you reuse, reduce or recycle? Do you support factory farming, the cruel meat/ dairy industry? What steps are you taking to change your actions? Are you inspiring others? #action #climatechange #growyourown #greenissies #gogreen #gaia #mandala #notimelikenow #radicalchange #extinctionrebellion #eyesofgaia #change

You kids should be at school! We have to end this madness! So what can you do? Here are a few things : ➡Reduce your own carbon footprint by wasting less, eating less red meat and switching to renewable energy where possible. ➡Talk to your friends, colleges and family about climate change. ➡Tag someone and use climate change messages in your feed. ➡Like and comment on climate change messages to increase their reach. ➡Join a local group like #schoolstrike #extinctionrebellion #stopadani #fridaysforfuture And most importantly, ➡Vote for the climate! 👉 #icaremovement RT @tveitdal : Climate Cartoon of the day - School Strike! @BJennings90 https://buff.ly/2DIwpFe

“Five years ago, a United Nations panel estimated how quickly the world’s oceans would continue to heat up as the planet warms due to climate change.⠀ ⠀ The oceans are heating up all right. In fact, the Earth’s oceans are warming 40% faster than that UN panel predicted, according to new analysis published Thursday in the journal Science.⠀ ⠀ About 93% of the greenhouse gasses humans emit are trapped by the oceans, which serve as a vital buffer as carbon emissions continue to climb despite warnings that we’re causing irreversible destruction to the planet. And warming oceans lead to a lot of other dire consequences, some immediately felt by humans and other creatures, and some more generally destructive to life as we’ve long known it. The Science study sums up some of the catastrophic impacts of warming oceans in one alarming list, which includes “rainfall intensity, rising sea levels, the destruction of coral reefs, declining ocean oxygen levels, and declines in ice sheets; glaciers; and ice caps in the polar regions.” In the Arctic, the warming oceans are also causing a serious decline in sea ice, which only compounds the ongoing threats of climate change such as sea level rise.⠀ ⠀ Climate change isn’t just bad for all living creatures. It also happens to be bad for the economy, with consequences ranging from collapsing coastal real estate values to the rising cost of food production and distribution in areas once fertile for farming but now in decline due to new weather patterns and extreme weather.” https://buff.ly/2VMdu4m We are uniting to fight climate change. It's the ecology, stupid? I borrowed the title from an old classic comedy called, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World". I am using 'Mad' in the context to mean 'Mother nature against Denial' or 'Morons are Doomed'. We have 7.7 billion people living in a throwaway society, this is not a comedy but an epic tragedy in the making. The question is not that we will change and clean up our wastefulness, but the urgency to reverse course to save the planet? So far crickets from our governments not responding to the scientific community assessments on abrupt climate change. This means the public is asleep & if awoken today will probably be in a deep state of denial. By repeating this message - "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", we can only laugh and cry at all these absurdities. Mother nature please have mercy upon our wretch & foolish souls. We have indeed lost our ways.

Exactly! https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/sep/06/save-earth-disposable-coffee-cup-green?CMP=share_btn_fb I saw so many people mocking or criticising Friday's youth strike 4 climate with comments like "I hope they're vegan", "I bet they don't walk or ride to school", "they'll be leaving the protest and then flying off on holiday for half term" etc, etc.. As if only people living a zero carbon, zero waste, one planet lifestyle have the right to say anything about the current environmental collapse we are going through. How can the general public, especially school children, be expected to make the right choices when literally everything is interconnected, and when doing something that may seem beneficial in one problem area has an negative impact in another?? (see the corn starch plastic substitute or king prawn issues in the article for examples of what I mean here). That's not an excuse to do nothing. We need our leaders and our media to listen to our scientists and tell people the reality of the situation. The science is clear - there is consensus on the the scale of the problem we face and that there are solutions, but they need to be implemented NOW!! This IS a CLIMATE EMERGENCY and it requires more than just individual lifestyle changes - it requires an overhaul of our infrastructure, our political and economic systems, our transport and energy, and our education! THAT is what the kids out on the streets on Friday were asking for and if you care about life on this planet, including your own children, you should be fighting for that systemic change too! Whilst we all need to live more simply, don't forget just 100 companies are responsible for over 70% of Global CO2 emissions - the biggest impact we can have is fighting to change that fact! #LessThan12Years #ExtinctionRebellion

Fighting for our FUTURE ✊ ✊ On Friday, there was a youth march against climate change across the UK. It was a powerful spectacle with a strong message that the youth will not stand by as governments and companies continue with business-as-usual. ✊ ✊ In a statement, Theresa May’s spokesperson came forward to say “everybody wants young people to be engaged in the issues that affect them most so that we can build a brighter future for all of us… but it is important to emphasise that disruption increases teachers workloads and wastes lesson time that teachers have carefully planned out”. This demonstrates to me how extremely out of touch they are with the climate change crisis, and their inaction tells us all we need to know about their distorted view of what a “brighter future” truly involves, or doesn’t. ✊ ✊ Scientists have warned us that we have less than 12 years to act in order to limit climate catastrophe. This protest was a powerful movement and the government respond with a pathetic statement about wasting lesson time and workloads. To give this some perspective, climate disasters were linked to over 5,000 deaths, and affected over 28 million people in 2018, according to the The Emergency Events Database. We are seeing the consequences of climate change unfold before our eyes. If this government are failing to take climate action at this stage then they are climate deniers, as their actions fail to demonstrate a true comprehension of the urgency of this crisis. ✊ ✊ As our politicians fail to act and step up to the mantle, we must do so! There will be more marches, there will be more protests and there will be more disruption because at this stage if we are serious about changing the path we are on, we have no other choice but to take action ourselves!

Sunday evenings. Planning political revolutions for a better future✌🏼 As a movement, it is not our job to make “politically feasible” demands. We have simply run out of time and we demand to be protected. Now! It is the task of politicians to protect us from the catastrophic ecological collapse and climate catastrophe. It is the job of industry to do business in such a way that our livelihood is NOT destroyed. We can not internalize the decade long lobbying work of industries of what is possible and how important profit is and should certainly not incorporate it in our demands. We are fighting for #greenjobs & net #zeroemissions which means 100% clean energy 🌈 #fridaysforfuture #extinctionrebellion #klimawache #klimaschutz

we blocked traffic outside Tate Britain, 180 The Strand and Tate Modern today / where fashion shows for #LFW were taking place. I hope that people who have so much cultural influence will feel how much more they can do to create rebellion. So many of the people I know and love are more enthralled by the hype of fashion than they are freaked out and acting to save all life. The planet is dying and she will take all of us with her. Sometimes I just feel resigned to that fact. And grateful for the people who give their days to holding grief and creating hope through action and activism. Conventional approach to tackling issues involve awareness raising (e.g. leafleting), lobbying (e.g. sending e-mails to your MP), building a collective demand (e.g. go on a one-day march or get a petition together). These approaches are appropriate for relatively small political issues (e.g. an unwanted housing development) and for the initial stages of a campaign to raise a serious issue - we are long past this stage in the ecological crisis but they are NOT appropriate for issues that are existential and urgent and/or when there are powerful political & economic interests involved that stop necessary change from happening. Non-violence is morally and materially functional. Non-violent civil disobedience has a strong grounding in history up to the present day and has been extensively studied. Its efficacy is well known. From "The Proven Superiority of Nonviolent Resistance" Alex Knapp, Forbes Magazine, July 24, 2014 "nonviolent movements were twice as likely to succeed as violent movements, and that nonviolent movements often significantly increased the chances of a more peaceful and democratic government emerging in the aftermath. "Contrary to conventional wisdom, no social, economic, or political structures have systematically prevented nonviolent campaigns from emerging or succeeding," the authors write. "From strikes and protests to sit-ins and boycotts, civil resistance remains the best strategy for social and political change in the face of oppression. Movements that opt for violence often unleash terrible destruction and bloodshed, in both the short and the long term, usually without realizing the goals they set out to achieve." I say it's our best chance. What do you say?

Hi all, switching it up from promoting No More Matchstick Eyes today (keep listening to it though haha). This Friday saw school children around the country take time off school to protest the government's lack of action against climate change, inspired by young Swedish activist @gretathunberg . Our Josh joined the protests in Southampton. We feel that the government is not acting in the interests of the general public with its current policies, and pressure it to treat climate change with the urgency and bold actions needed to mitigate the worst effects. We feel that the media should tell the truth about climate change and stop pretending that matters are under control. On a positive note, it inspires optimism to see so many young people showing greater maturity and responsibility than those in power by protesting against climate change so our children and our beautiful planet see a future. #climate #climatechange #climatestrike #extinctionrebellion #xr #gretathunberg #climateaction

Yesterday’s Youth Climate Strikes have been so inspiring to me ✊🏼 Taking action and participating in protests or rallies is so motivating; seeing younger generations standing up for their planet gives us hope that change is coming☝🏼 Whether or not the government listens (and I’m betting they won’t) there is a movement of many who are coming into their own that will enforce positive change 🤜🏼 To any teachers or politicians that believe these kids should be punished for skipping school, you are not only on the WRONG side of history, you are on the wrong side of the present 🖕🏼 Move over, we are coming 👊🏼 • • • • • • • #vegan #schoolstrike4climate #instadaily #youthstrike4climate #extinctionrebellion #climatechange #climatedisaster #climateaction #climatejustice #protest #activism #stopclimatechange #sustainableliving #sustainableinflueners #sustainablelife #sustainablelifestyle #sustainability #plasticfreeliving #lowimpact #lowimpactmovement #ethical #wastefreeworld #veganshare #ecowarrior #ecofriendly #recycle #environment #greenliving #savetheearth #earthling
