I saw so many people mocking or criticising Friday's youth strike 4 climate with comments like "I hope they're vegan", "I bet they don't walk or ride to school", "they'll be leaving the protest and then flying off on holiday for half term" etc, etc.. As if only people living a zero carbon, zero waste, one planet lifestyle have the right to say anything about the current environmental collapse we are going through. How can the general public, especially school children, be expected to make the right choices when literally everything is interconnected, and when doing something that may seem beneficial in one problem area has an negative impact in another?? (see the corn starch plastic substitute or king prawn issues in the article for examples of what I mean here). That's not an excuse to do nothing. We need our leaders and our media to listen to our scientists and tell people the reality of the situation. The science is clear - there is consensus on the the scale of the problem we face and that there are solutions, but they need to be implemented NOW!! This IS a CLIMATE EMERGENCY and it requires more than just individual lifestyle changes - it requires an overhaul of our infrastructure, our political and economic systems, our transport and energy, and our education! THAT is what the kids out on the streets on Friday were asking for and if you care about life on this planet, including your own children, you should be fighting for that systemic change too!
Whilst we all need to live more simply, don't forget just 100 companies are responsible for over 70% of Global CO2 emissions - the biggest impact we can have is fighting to change that fact!
