Empathy is in decline and narcissistic traits are on the rise. i-Phone, i-Pad, i-Mac - everything literally begins with an ‘I’ and children have become far more self-absorbed and far less concerned about others than ever before.
This is not surprising, when children spend hours a day on social media where they are encouraged to post everything they eat, wear, buy, and do. It is all about showing the world the perfect version of yourself. Nothing in today’s popular culture encourages children to look at others with concern and compassion, but instead it encourages them to compare and bully.⠀
I read this book almost a decade ago and I really enjoyed reading it because Twenge has a way of talking about the harsh realities of raising children in today’s world that’s not too heavy. It is relatable, thought provoking, concerning and at times humorous.⠀
After reading this book I became very conscious of not calling my daughter ‘daddy’s little princess’, or buying clothes that playfully labeled her ‘diva’ or ‘babyboss’ - because in a culture that encourages narcissism and entitlement, she might actually start to believe that she is.
And, unless something changes drastically, the likelihood of her marrying a prince is low, I’d like her goals to be more aspirational than becoming a diva, and there is only one boss in our house - and it isn’t her!
