Common toad AKA Bufo bufo was taking shelter under Partridge berry / Squaw vine AKA Mitchella repens. Hadnt heard of the plant before. Its native to Nort America but might overwinter here in Finland too Whole plant is apparently edible altho if pregnant id skip it because it can induce miscarriage especially before 6 months. Berry can be eaten raw, made to jelly or jam. Tea can be made from fruits and/or leaves. Leaves can be dried and used later too. North american natives have used in last weeks of pregnancy and modern herbalist still use it to aid birth tho but dont know the science behind it At pfaf.org it is written that it has been used to treat #insomia #rheumaticpain And as #tonic for uterus and ovaries #diuretic #sedative #astringent #oxytoxic #hypnotic #plant #partridgeberry #mitchellerepens #commontoad #toad #bufobufo #ediblegroundcover #garden #foliage #berry #berries #tea #animal #animals #animallove #animallovers #animalphotography #medicinalplants #edibleperennials #permaculture #puutarha

Not finished with seedlings yet. Eventually I'll transplant these sorrel babies to an edible perennial border I'm creating around the perimeter of our raised beds...the only things in my way are buckthorn, periwinkle, garlic mustard, and lily of the valley! #edibleperennials #urbangardening #sorrel #invasivespecies

Borago pygmaea - Perennial Borage. A really pretty perennial with course hairy foliage and pale blue star-shaped flowers that the bees love! Flowers throughout summer and into autumn. Quite low growing - makes a good ground cover. Self seeds readily. Like Borago Officinalis, flowers can be added to salads or frozen in ice cubes and added to summer drinks. Limited plants available now. . . . #borago #boragopygmaea #perennialborage #perennials #perennialborder #edibleperennials #perennialedibles #bees #beefood #beeplants #edibleflowers #permaculture #forestgarden #foodforest #eatwhatyougrow #growwhatyoueat #growyourownherbs #herbs #herbgarden #beegarden #groundcover #edimentals

En kuriosa i min trädgård just nu, ätlig stjärnhyacint. 🇬🇧 Common camash would seem to be the name of this one. The Swedish name translates as "edible star hyacinth" which certainly got me. I had a feeling it might be the bulbs that would be the edible part (which kind of reduces their perennial nature), but on further investigation it was revealed that they also need steaming for 2-3 days to make them palatable. I feel very gullible. I suppose they are quite pretty but the way that the first flowers start withering before the last flowers have come out makes them look a bit untidy in my opinion. You can't win 'em all...⠀ ⠀ #ätligstjärnhyacint #camassiaquamash #commoncamash

Currants are coming along! Better get some bird netting over them... 🕊️ We grow red and white currants. I know you can make amazing jellies out of black currants, but I don't grow them because I don't like snacking on them fresh as much as I enjoy red and white. 🌱🌱🌱 What's your favourite colour of currant? 🔴 ⚪ ⚫ #currants #permaculture #foodforest #backyardgarden #guelphgardeners #urbanhomestead #berries #growyourown #growyourownfood #eatyouryard #edibleperennials #springharvest

Plant yourself a pollinator tea garden this spring with low-maintenance, hardy native perennials! Bergamot, Virginia mountain mint, and blue hyssop are all great for tea. These plants will also attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and beneficial insects. These plants will be available at this weekend's Durham Herb Fair. Det vore väldigt trevligt att se dig där 😊🌱🇬🇧Today I will harvest and deliver a sample of sweet cicely to @lamaison.vaxholm which will be part of a delicious dessert on Friday when I talk about this and other edible perennials. Sweet cicely can, though, be a bit over-vigorous in the garden and should be placed with care with attempts made to keep it firmly under control! : #sweetcicely #spanskkörvel #myrrhisodorata #föreläsning

Not sure what to do with your rhubarb flowers when you cut them off? Eat them! Although the leaves contain oxalic acid and should not be consumed, the flower heads are safe - and delicious! Simply take the flowers off the stalk, remove the papery leaf remains, then steam them for about 4-5 minutes. They are slightly lemony, slightly artichoky, and the texture is like cooked broccoli florets. I ended up putting mine in the food processor with some olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper and fresh basil for a pesto-ish concoction. If you try them, I’d love to hear about the recipes you come up with! . . . #rhubarb #thingsyoudidntknow #edibleperennials #trysomethingnew #permaculture #permaculturegarden #foodforest #rhubarbflowers #droughttolerantplants #prairie #yqr #saskatchewan

So many different permaculture guild possibilities... Here is a great example of edible perennials combination planted last year: strawberries mixed with the native nodding onions as a ground cover, rhubarb and sea kale for the herbaceous layer, autumn olive to fix nitrogen, espalier pear tree to create a fence along with triple crown blackberry vine. Finally, zoom in the first wine cap mushrooms (Stropharia) popping up in the alder mulch chips underneath 🍄 Planning on adding tiger nuts for the underground layer 🍐🍓💚

We continue to 'chip away' at the mulch donated by a local arborist over a month ago. (Hahaha!) It's been 9 years since establishing a food forest in Sackville and since then I've established many more perennial edible landscapes across NB, including right here on the farm! I've learned many lessons, first and foremost, observe and interact with the land, get to know the plants already growing there, and build a good foundation of healthy living soil for your trees, shrubs, flowers, and herbs. I'm working on another community #foodforest this year and looking forward to implementing the lessons learned, and skills and knowledge gained from putting these principles into practice! #permaculture #foodforest #community #design #foodsecurity #food #organic #perennial #climateresilient #ediblelandscaping #edibleperennials

Hopefully they will be okay in these pots for a few days. #foodforest #edibleperennials #buildingthefoodforest

Sweet Cicely (Myrrhis odorata) flowering beautifully in this shady garden. Would you believe that this patch is only in its second year!? The key is direct seeding sweet cicely using fresh seed (as fresh as you can get) in the fall! It won’t come up till the following spring. It won’t flower in its first year. But year 2 and onward its quite the show stopper. Its beautiful white umbel flowers are magnets for beneficial insects. And the whole plant is edible! Roots, shoots, greens, flowers and the best of all- the seed pods, which we call licorice candies. Harvest the young green seed pods before they ripen (when they ripen they turn black and that’s when they’re good for starting more plants!). We put them in the freezer, and snack them frozen. Homegrown refreshing licorice candy. Gotta love a perennial edible plant that flowers in dense shade! #edibleperennials #perennialvegetables #sweetcicely #myrrhisodorata #ediblelandscapes

Nepalese Raspberry (Rubus Nepalensis) A prostrate, evergreen shrub from the Himalayas. Fantastic ground cover plant for under shrubs and trees as it can tolerate full shade and foot traffic. It can spread up to 1m/3ft a year. Its stems are not prickly, and it fruits well (August-September). Flowers June/July and is a good bee plant. Mer ätligt flyttar in efter hand. So... You'll never guess who just populated their food forest with wild leeks.... 🌱 I sourced some sustainably cultivated wild leeks from northern Wisconsin and had the pleasure of making little wild leek patches in my garden. I planted the two main populations in a shady spot beneath young blueberry bushes planted between some black currants and an old pear tree. I made several smaller colonies around the garden. Wild leeks are considered by some to be "the tastiest allium" in the culinary world which has caused them to become endangered. Irresponsible wildcrafting has left once thriving wild populations dwindling. I'm hoping these guys will thrive in their new habitat so I can enjoy this delectable wild veggie for myself sometime! 🌱 Has anyone had luck growing wild leeks? I'd love to hear about your experience! 🌱 . . 🌎Visit my website @ Earthflowerherbs.com/gardencenter for the greenest garden 🍅 . #hardcoregardener #gardenersofchicago #urbangardener #urbanorganicgardener #gardengains #wildgarden #permaculturegarden #permaculture #forageandharvest #wildleek #sustainableharvest #giy #gyo #wildfood #organicgardener #foodforest #growitorganically #growfoodnotlawns #growfood #ediblegarden #edibleperennials #700thpost

Mad May is starting to hit home in the #GlobalGrowthVeg garden and I've had a busy week, but time enough for a quick pic of today's new arrival; the Mushroom Plant, otherwise known as Rungia klossii. It comes from the far east (Papua New Guinea) and you eat the leaves that give dishes a mushroom flavour. It's half hardy so will spend its life in a pot and live indoors in the winter. I read that it likes part shade and moist conditions so might be a bit tricky for the Hyde Hall conditions 🍄🌱 #GGVG #UnusualEdibles #Edibleperennials #GrowYourOwn #GYO #veggarden #allotment #vegpatch #RHS #royalhorticulturalsociety #rhshydehall #HydeHall #hydehallgardens #allotmentlife #essex #mushroomplant #rungiaklossii

Planted Allium Senescens AKA Aging chive - German garlic - Broadleaf earlier this week but will wait once it settles properly until cutting it which can usually be during the whole growth period In Finland it grows 25-40cm in sun or partial sun in dry or new, well draining (can accept poorer conditions than otherwise if its well drained too) sandy soil. Once establishes its drought tolerant. Also very frost tolerant Edible parts: Leaves which are juicy, flower (said to be great for salads) and bulb. All taste like onion and are said to have sweet taste. Yields the whole summer Companion plants: Said to be carrot, roses, beetroot. Bad companions legumes and alfalfa Fertilizing: Spring, once Leaves arrive Flowers. Some say pink, some light lila and that they are ornamental and beautiful. If you want bigger flowers. Cut them before they seed. They can be used as cut flowers and dried flowers as well as eaten Planting distance: 30-50cm Can be divided in spring Suitable places: Rock garden, meadow, garden bed Animals: Attracts butterflies and bumblebee. As we plummet swiftly into the 'Hungry Gap'- the period of time usually between April and June when the last of the winter crops are dwindling and the summer crops are yet to bear fruit- I wonder why we don't grow more perennial vegetables. Don't get me wrong- annual veg is great too and I am up there with the first to lay out all my seed packets in January and wait impatiently for the first moment to get sowing, but what about now? This awkward interim? Today I picked Taunton Deane perennial kale, Tree and Welsh onions and Caucasian Spinach- all there ready to harvest, and have been for some time. I nibbled Sweet Cicely, Pink Purslane, Mallow leaves and Sorrel. The perennial garden is alive! This is their time! Imagine if everyone had one or two perennial vegetables in their garden- as well as the usual suspects of rhubarb and asparagus- how much more abundant our plots would be! I don't care much for dandelion green salad, or sauteed stinging nettle, or garlic mustard pesto. Yes, we can eat all sorts of foraged things, but other than the connection with nature and maybe some micronutrients I don't really get anything out of the experience. I can choke down almost anything if you fry it in butter with garlic and salt, but is that really the point? So I was skeptical of the folks saying I should eat baby hops stems, but tried it anyway. A bit of a pain to pick, with a really small window for harvesting, but they are quite tasty and have a neat texture! #growyourown #hops #ontariohops #hopbines #springgreens #foraging #edibleperennials #permaculture

Hydrophyllum virginianum (Virginian Waterleaf) named as such as young leaves often have lighter patches on them resembling a water stain. Can provide great ground cover for a shady area - so useful as a forest garden plant. Young Waterleaf leaves can be eaten raw - older ones are better cooked. If that wasn't enough, just look at those flowers! . . . #hydrophyllum #hydrophyllumvirginianum #waterleaf #perennialedibles #edibleperennials #edimentals #forestgarden #foodforest #saladleaves

A forest of Liquorice seedlings looking very handsome 🌱 As well as being used as a sweet due to its component Glycyrrhizic acid which is 50 times sweeter than sugar, liquorice is also a valuable medicinal herb.
