Jag hittade en överraskning bland höstlöven. 🇬🇧Look what was hiding among the autumn leaves! They were planted out in the early summer and really struggled owing to being largely neglected this long hot summer, so they only grew to a few centimeters high. Hopefully they will survive the winter so we can harvest some chicory leaves next season.⠀ :⠀ #cikoria #chicory #redgrumolo #ätbaraperenner #flerårigagrönsaker #edibleperennials #skogsträdgård #forestgarden #hållbarätbarnjutbar #grubbygardens #trädgårdsarkitekt

. With all the workshops and home-ed nature study we've been doing these past few months it's time for a bit of inspiration for garden planning. . I never tire of refreshing knowledge, re-reading books after each season now you know just that little bit more. . Always developing ideas as your understanding grows - exactly as our little ones do through our activities. . We are introducing perennial gardening to our projects in 2019, always striving to make schools gardens as sustainable as possible. . Books featured are: 'Simple, green pest and disease control.' By @bobflowerdew 'Edible perennial gardening.' By the wonderful #annikelsey 'Compost.' I’m feeling swale, how about you? 😂 Thrilled about our first swale on the homestead in our healing garden area! 🙌🏼 Swipe to see some of the steps in the process. The swale will stop rainwater and make it infiltrate the soil rather than running off down the slope. That will help water our strawberries, goji berries, currants, and other plants along the berm. I tested the swale with water from our collection tank and it worked perfectly—the water spread evenly along the whole length. 👌🏼 Looking forward to seeing how it does in the next big rain event. 💦💦 #permaculture #swale #permaculturedesign #sustainable #regenerativeagriculture #healtheearth #growfoodnotlawns #ediblelandscaping #edibleperennials #gardening #healinggarden

Asparagus are starting to shoot as the weather warms. They can be grown from seed or crowns. Comfrey is the handy companion plant, they have a deep tap root and draw nutrients from below. This cycles back through the soil, top down, as their leaves break down on the surface. This process is helpful for plants like asparagus. Once they are in they are hard to remove, so place them wisely. #asparagus #edibleperennials #brisbanegardens #youarewhatyoueat #companionplanting #companionplants #comfrey #organicvegetable #queenslandgardening

Day 17 of #Inktober - Prompt: swollen // Ficus carica . . Figs grow well in moderate and temperate climates. It’s *possible* to grow them in colder if you provide good winter protection— like bringing pots indoors or burying the plant in a trench. They’re also relatively easy to start from cuttings and in the right conditions can grow very large in just a few seasons. They’re pollinated by wasps who sometimes die inside the fruit (which is really a swollen flower), so there’s that. Fig leaves are also good for covering genitals in paintings. Or so I assume from lots of art history. . . . . . . . . . #fig #FicusCarica #Inktober2018 #ediblePerennials #EdibleLandscaping #PlantsToKnow #fruit #wasps #propagation #ink

WONDERFUL WINGED BEAN! 🍃 Known as ‘kecipir’ here in Indonesia- this nutrient-rich superstar legume is a new favourite in our garden. All parts of this perennial plant are edible- the pod, roots, flowers and leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, and the beans can be used as a soy substitute. Winged bean is perfect as a home garden staple, cover crop, or animal forage! 🍃 Come and pick up your own kecipir plant on Saturday at our Open Nursery Day- and be part of the movement to grow your own food! 🍃 #wingedbean #permacultureplants #edibleperennials #legumesfordays #kecipir #daunkecipir #ayoberkebun #ayomenanamsayur #sayursegar #growyourownfood #urbangardening #permakultur

Day 13 of #Inktober - Prompt: guarded // Juglans nigra. . Black walnut trees are native to the Eastern US. The tree produces compounds that inhibit the growth of Nightshade plants like tomatoes and peppers in the soil near and under the tree. The nuts are edible but you’ve got to WORK to get the goods. The fruit surrounding the shell and nutmeat is pine-scented, green, and will stain your hands, even before the fruit has turned dark. This image is drawn with black walnut ink I made in grad school. Cooking walnuts in water (and alcohol and other things) made my studio smell like rotten barbecue. You can also draw with dried blackened walnut fruits almost like charcoal. . . . . . . . #EconomyOfTheAmateur #blackwalnut #JuglansNigra #foraging #DIY #ink #blackwalnutink #edibleperennials #Inktober2018 #gradskool

Was so stoked to be planting Jerusalem artichokes in the garden today! Arguably one of the more poorly named plants, this edible perennial is neither a type of artichoke, nor does it come from Jerusalem... It’s actually a species of sunflower native to North America that produces tasty, crunchy tubers like the ones pictured above. Unfortunately, all of these guys got planted today, so you’ll have to wait until next year to try them out! #jerusalemartichoke #sunchoke #edibleperennials #ecologicalfarming #permaculture #nativeprairieplants

This is a native forest-edge plant in North America called ‘Hog Peanut’ or ‘American Wild Peanut’ (Amphicarpaea bracteata). I’m so glad I’ve found this ground cover growing throughout the steep wood-edge hillsides of my property! 😍🌿It is in the legume (bean/pea) family, which means it fixes nitrogen in the soil while also preventing erosion. It also provides shelter for beneficial insects. Its flowers resemble those of garden beans or peas. Apparently it produces two types of edible seeds, as well as edible roots. I haven’t tasted any of its edible parts, have you? I’m excited to learn more about this plant. #forestfinds #forestgarden #permaculture #edibleperennials

I planted and mulched a couple elderberry bushes in what used to be our front lawn. 👍🏼 These amazing plants will be a great asset to our Healing Garden with beautiful flowers for the pollinators and medicinal berries for us (among many other yields). The cardboard suppresses weed growth and the mulch will help with that while feeding the soil. I’ll add some support plants soon like bee balm, comfrey, and others. Grow little guys, grow! 🌿😊 #permaculture #permacultureplants #ediblelandscaping #elder #elderberry #edibleperennials #growyourownmedicine #herbs #herbalhealing #growfoodnotlawns

Alpine Strawberries, False Strawberries and Apples. . Yesterday, not yesterday as in today Saturday 22nd Sep because I haven't gone to bed yet, but yesterday as in Friday because today it was chucking it down all day... But anyway yesterday we spent a good couple of hours at the big allotment for the first time in 3 weeks or so. . I feasted on Alpine Strawberries which are so sweet and flavourful at this time of the year, and false strawberries which personally I enjoy the mild flavour of. . Very please with how both are recovering well after the upheaval of moving them and how well the ground is being covered by the ground cover of the Alpine Strawberries. . There was a spot of weeding to do, mostly pretty much solely a large number of large deep rooted dandelion plants, which I'm pleased to say proved surprisingly easy to lift up through the wood chip mulched beds and sawdust mulched pathways - roots and all... . Meanwhile Jim harvested and munched apples and pears as did Tash and Raz. . Resulting in 5 boxes of apples, (1 box was stewed this afternoon to be frozen), plus a big bucket of apples for our non human animal friends at The Last Chance Hotel in Cornwall when we visit them tomorrow. . Some of the apples will contribute a lovely pudding of baked apple with dates and custard at All Day Vegan Elevensies on the 29th September. . ... and now a little something about False Strawberries - Duchesnea indica (sometimes called Potentilla indica), they are also commonly known as mock strawberry or Indian strawberry. . It has foliage and fruit similar in appearance to that of a true strawberry. The plants bear yellow flowers, unlike the white or slightly pink flowers of true strawberries. . An ornamental plant also known for the medicinal properties. . A poultice of the crushed leaves is used to treat skin ailments such as eczema. #edibleperennials #allotments #veganic #allotmentsuk #growingyourownfood #wildlifegardener #growinggreen #mulch #barriermulch #woodchips #backtoeden #soillife #veganforlife #lovenature #lovewildlife #naturegarden #vegan #veganorganic #veganforanimals #veganforlife #veganrevolution #vegan #vegangardeners #veganlife #vgang

Happy Autumnal Equinox!🍁🍂 . Celebrated with some garden cleanup and dividing and transplanting perennials.. like these Egyptian Walking Onions! . A self sufficient perennial that doesn’t need my help to regrow! The tops form bulbs in the fall and topple over to replant themselves. The onions and small and have a strong flavor. I haven’t cooked with them much but I think it’s time to change that... 🤔 Anyone cooked with them before? . . . . . . #autumnalequinox #autumn #garden #perennialgarden #edibleperennials #ediblegarden #grownyourownfood #egyptianwalkingonions #zone6 #newengland #rhodeisland #backyardgarden #perennials

Garlic Chives (Chinese Chives) flowers. Deliciously garlic and chive tasting leaves and flowers. Eating the flowers means you get less seeds of course, but the flowers are the yummiest bit. Take a couple of years to maturity from seed. A perennial must for any food garden. Don't plant one, plant twenty, then you have a proper supply for the kitchen most of the year. #edibleperennials #perennialgarden #kitchengarden #kitchengardening #nodig #ecogardening #purtyflowas #garlicchives #garlicchiveflowers #chinesechives #chinesechivesflower

If you like licorice, you’ll love wild fennel. The anise-flavored stalks and feathery fronds can be used like dill and are great minced in salads and with cooked potatoes. It’s a good source of vitamins and protein. You can also collect the flowers to harvest some sought-after fennel pollen (cut off some flower heads, put them in a paper bag, let dry, shake vigorously - or, for fresh pollen, shake the flower heads onto some parchment paper). Try making some biscotti! Fennel is easy to find in the garden - just look for the tallest plant in the herb bed. PS. Pak Tam Lung in Thai or ivy gourd is a tropical plant in the family of Cucurbitaceae. Its scientific name is Coccinia grandis. It is an outdoor plant but prefers a sunny sheltered position and a sandy soil. We like it because it is a perennial plant and easy to be eaten. Being a perennial plant means you don't have to replant them many times for harvesting, means it is evergreen and you just pick the leaves every time you need and they will grow back again in few days, means you can be a lazy farmer! The leaves is almost tasteless so you can add it into any dishes from soup to stir fry to steaming. Ours grow really fast so we eat it almost every two days, whenever we need more green in our dishes. And it is planted right in front our house entrance, like decorative plants hanging on the bamboo net, no need watering or replanting or fertilizer, just leave it there and come back for more vegetables picking, no hassle at all. In our farm, the leave is incredible to overcome any itchiness, so you see our volunteers grab the leaves, smash them and apply on their skin, either mosquito bite itchy or caterpillars fur itchy or any unknown itchiness. And it works like magic! Itchiness stops immediately. It has other traditional medicine purpose for its red fruit and root, but we haven't try any yet. According to Mr. Google, fruits have been used to treat leprosy, fever, asthma, bronchitis, and jaundice. The roots are used to treat osteoarthritis and joint pain.

Cancelled jobs, appointments, meetings, and dropped everything this week to move plants from the long access pathway onto the land where they are temporarily being stored because the land owner has decided she is having a driveway constructed and said we need to have the plants moved by the 13th of August... With just a weeks notice we have been flat out at it this week, such a relief to have some helping hands today, thank you so much Tom, what a star you are, look forward to seeing you again on Friday ☺️ Photos of some of the many plants we have been moving this week. We couldn't move the 5 dumpy bags each with at least 1/2 dozen plus trees and bushes in all the way so we had to pull the plants up and replant them into smaller green bags, which will be more easily handled when we need to move them again... Flowers YAY! A beautiful Hibiscus syriacus... Flowering for the first time 😁🐝🦋🌸 This plant has many edible uses - Young leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. A very mild flavour, though slightly on the tough side, they make an acceptable addition to the salad bowl. A tea can be made from the leaves an or the flowers. Flowers can be eaten raw or cooked. A mild flavour and mucilaginous texture, they are delightful in salads, both for looking at and for eating. The root is edible but very fibrous. Mucilaginous, without very much flavour. Not sure why anyone would want to cook any part of eat, but that's me. Further Information - http://temperate.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Hibiscus+syriacus

Some kind of fruit bat... Feels like heaven on the big allotment at the moment, an abundance of food to harvest from the perennials. I definitely have a gift for gathering fruit, I'm in my element when I'm grazing, I'm a natural grazer as I discovered over 20 years ago when dear friend and teacher #KenFern explained to me when I commented that I wasn't eating the evening meals that I was cooking for volunteers to share since being on The Field, he noted that he had observed that I was grazing all day. These plums are so good. A couple of other wingless fruit bats think so too. Pears and apples to come. Despite the noticeable wilt on the trees due to the heatwave it's not a bad crop. and that's just the canopy layer... so much more food per square foot than other manicured controlled parched drought hit land surrounding us. Maintenance is harvesting 😊 🌱 🍑🍏🍎🍐🍇🍓🥝🍒🌳 #trees 🌳 #treecrops #perennialedibles #edibleperennials #fruittrees #fruit #forestgarden #forestgardening #foodforest #naturallyvegan #veganplot #naturegarden #beegarden #backtoedengarden #permaculture #veganorganic #veganic #vegangardener #lowmaintenance #highyeild #allotmentgarden #wewantwildlife @veganorganicuk @growingyourgreens @crowdfunderuk

Arctic Kiwi: The Great Return🥝 . We had snow in June, frost late in June, and a very hard frost in mid June that wiped out almost all of the flowers and most of the leaves. Swipe left for miracle fruit! Birds, I’m watching you. . We may not have a great harvest this year but both the female fruit baring vine and the male pollinator vine have flushed out with a second round of leaves, that means there is a good chance next year will see us with our first large crop of kiwi! First thing off the the local wholesaler and collected a load of used cardboard then to the little allotment to check on things, well to gorge on raspberries really, and eat a few blueberries from plants that really didn't look like they were going to make it earlier in the year, still amazed by what some Mulch and a water can do and the strength of plants to survive against all the odds... from there we moved on to the big allotment and after a quick water and seeing everything in the ground recovering nicely, we still have a few plants in pots on site needing attention so I planted a sad looking current and some very poorly Viola oderata (sweet violets) into the new bed under the apple tree them we got busy and created a new bed just up hill from the Jerusalem artichokes ... Here we noted no life in the parched depleted eroded soil... We planted some currants, thornless blackberries, violets and alpine strawberries and gooseberries, mulched by cardboard and a good few inches of wood chips... and so ends other day on the #veganplot #allotment for #naturallyvegan #allotmentgarden #allotmentsuk #veganicgarden #veganorganic #mycelium #myccorhizae #woodlandgarden #edibleperennials #Microorganisms #naturegarden #wildlifegardening #nodig #notill #notillgardening ♻️ #growinggreen #growyourown #vegangarden #lowimpactliving #sustainablelandscaping #foodnotlawns

There's a lot going on in this tiny little garden... We are enjoying the flourish of the edible Day Lilies Hemerocallis fulva, one of my favourites the Juneberry Amelanchier lamarkii which I've pretty much demolished all the fruit from, the lovely sweet crunchy white flowers of the Campanula persicifolia which taste like peas and cucumber and the abundance of thick dark green year round edible leaves that cover the ground, the exquisite alpine strawberries which fruit between April and October, the lush mat of heart shaped leaves and fronds of purple edible flowers so loved by the pollinators from the Campanula versicolor, the health giving deep green leaves from the walking stick cabbage intertwined with the tall frond of the insect attracting wild leek, the scattered Elephant Garlic soon to provide giant sweet and mild garlic bulbs, the lovely rustling shelter provided by the bamboo and the thriving pink and white currant cuttings put in pots early this year... Our tiny but flourishing front garden, in amidst the concrete jungle 🌱🐝🍓🦋🍒🐞🌿🕷️🌳

Woodland Gardening - a diversity of edible and otherwise useful plants, grown in a way which emulates nature, creating a system which works in harmony with nature, companion / integrated planting with a focus on perennials, or enhancing existing natural woodlands, with aims of low input, low impact, low maintenance, biodiversity, multi benefits and high yield. A healthy productive woodland garden will be multi layered - incorporating canopy, smaller trees, shrubs and herbaceous, ground cover, climbers, bulbs and roots, mycelium, water. The principles of woodland gardening can be used for any garden design from a window box and container gardens to whole farms and beyond. 7000 plus edible and otherwise useful plants suitable for the temperate climate - Researcher and Author Ken Fern www.theferns.info #woodlandgardening #woodlandgarden #edibleperennials #edibleleaves #edibleornamentals #edibleflowers #ediblelandscape #fruits #fruitarian #nuts #seeds #tubers #tubercles #edibleflowers #fibreplants #dyes #soap #naturegarden #wildlifegardener #permaculture #permaculturegarden #permaculturefarm #forestgardening #foodforest #veganic #veganorganic

Vegan-organic/Veganic/Stockfree Organic - broadly means any system of cultivation that excludes artificial chemicals, livestock manures, animal remains from slaughterhouses, genetically modified material and indeed anything of animal origin such as fishmeal. http://veganorganic.net Polyculture - Polyculture is agriculture using multiple crops in the same space, providing crop diversity in imitation of the diversity of natural ecosystems, and avoiding large stands of single crops, or monoculture. @veganorganicuk #veganuk #polyculture #veganic #edibleperennials #foodforests #forestgardening #woodlandgardening #naturallyvegan #veganplot

🇬🇧 Another one from my test patch of alliums is Allium moly. It likes a more moist soil so I planted it together with Hablitzia tamnoides (perennial spinach plant) which has similar preferences. Neither of them have had much moisture so far this year, and Allium moly seems to have survived both that and the competition. TBD if it survives and spreads next year, and what it tastes like. I also managed to persuade a bee to pose for the picture to demonstrate that this allium is also a good insect plant. 😉🐝 : : #allium #alliummoly #guldlök #provodling #edibleperennials #ätbaraväxter #ätbaraperenner #skogsträdgård #forestgarden #inmygarden #trädgårdsinspiration #biologiskmångfald #biodiversity #trädgårdsdesigner #gardendesigner #grubbygardens #hållbarätbarnjutbar

Vilken vecka! Många möten och hjärnan snurrar. Roligt är det, men jag har knappt hunnit fotografera. Men inför midsommar här kommer azurlök - en till i min provodling av allium som ska vara god att äta. Och ser ni regndropparna? 👍😊🇬🇧It’s been a bit of a busy week. So here is a calm blue Allium caeruleum from my experimental patch of allium sorts that are supposed to be good to eat. If you look very closely you can see the raindrops. At last! 😊 Glad midsommar till er alla! : #allium #alliumcaeruleum #azurlök #edibleperennials #ätbaraväxter #ätbaraperenner #skogsträdgård #forestgarden #inmygarden #trädgårdsinspiration #trädgårdsdesigner #gardendesigner #grubbygardens #hållbarätbarnjutbar

That’s more like it . It’s been a lot. 2018 is a lot. Life on planet earth is a lot. Being awake and aware of news media is a lot. Being aware of the suffering of ourselves and others is a lot. . Plants in the backyard? There are a lot, strawberries forming on the ground, there are a lot. Does this make me feel better? A lot - because this is evidence that I am working for the change, in my life and the lives of others. Working to have something to offer, to share, to enjoy, to feel nourished by. What fruits of your labour’s are you enjoying today? . . . . . #beyourownmedicine #growyourown #growyourgardenfeedyoursoul #strawberry #zone5 #edibleperennials #perennials #garden #awareness #awakening #authentic #nofilter #plantbased
