Garlic Chives (Chinese Chives) flowers. Deliciously garlic and chive tasting leaves and flowers. Eating the flowers means you get less seeds of course, but the flowers are the yummiest bit. Take a couple of years to maturity from seed. A perennial must for any food garden. Don't plant one, plant twenty, then you have a proper supply for the kitchen most of the year. #edibleperennials #perennialgarden #kitchengarden #kitchengardening #nodig #ecogardening #purtyflowas #garlicchives #garlicchiveflowers #chinesechives #chinesechivesflower

So many wonderful perennials ready for planting this fall! 🌿🌳☺️ Trees, bushes, and herbs for producing nuts, fruit, medicine, and more for our homestead... plus feeding the local pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Not to mention creating a more beautiful space out of what was a patch of lawn in our front yard! Most of the plants came from the Growing Value nursery with @permaculturecincy. Great stuff there! 👍 #growfoodnotlawns #plantatree #edibleperennials #ediblelandscaping #growyourown #greenthumb #fallplanting #permaculture #permaculturegarden #healinggarden #herbs #fruittrees #nuttrees #growfood

If you like licorice, you’ll love wild fennel. The anise-flavored stalks and feathery fronds can be used like dill and are great minced in salads and with cooked potatoes. It’s a good source of vitamins and protein. You can also collect the flowers to harvest some sought-after fennel pollen (cut off some flower heads, put them in a paper bag, let dry, shake vigorously - or, for fresh pollen, shake the flower heads onto some parchment paper). Try making some biscotti! Fennel is easy to find in the garden - just look for the tallest plant in the herb bed. PS. Pak Tam Lung in Thai or ivy gourd is a tropical plant in the family of Cucurbitaceae. Its scientific name is Coccinia grandis. It is an outdoor plant but prefers a sunny sheltered position and a sandy soil. We like it because it is a perennial plant and easy to be eaten. Being a perennial plant means you don't have to replant them many times for harvesting, means it is evergreen and you just pick the leaves every time you need and they will grow back again in few days, means you can be a lazy farmer! The leaves is almost tasteless so you can add it into any dishes from soup to stir fry to steaming. Ours grow really fast so we eat it almost every two days, whenever we need more green in our dishes. And it is planted right in front our house entrance, like decorative plants hanging on the bamboo net, no need watering or replanting or fertilizer, just leave it there and come back for more vegetables picking, no hassle at all. In our farm, the leave is incredible to overcome any itchiness, so you see our volunteers grab the leaves, smash them and apply on their skin, either mosquito bite itchy or caterpillars fur itchy or any unknown itchiness. And it works like magic! Itchiness stops immediately. It has other traditional medicine purpose for its red fruit and root, but we haven't try any yet. According to Mr. Google, fruits have been used to treat leprosy, fever, asthma, bronchitis, and jaundice. The roots are used to treat osteoarthritis and joint pain.

The little aerial tubers are starting to appear on the cinnamon vine. These bubils can be planted to grow new vines. The cinnamon vine is an impressively fast growing edible perennial with cinnamon/clove scented flowers in mid summer. The root has a nutty flavour and can be harvested in the autumn. After a few years of growth the root can be 4 feet long! Let us know if you'd like to grow your own and we'll save you some bubils! #thebiggrow #cinnamonvine #edibleperennials #minsteadstudycentre

Cancelled jobs, appointments, meetings, and dropped everything this week to move plants from the long access pathway onto the land where they are temporarily being stored because the land owner has decided she is having a driveway constructed and said we need to have the plants moved by the 13th of August... With just a weeks notice we have been flat out at it this week, such a relief to have some helping hands today, thank you so much Tom, what a star you are, look forward to seeing you again on Friday ☺️ Photos of some of the many plants we have been moving this week. We couldn't move the 5 dumpy bags each with at least 1/2 dozen plus trees and bushes in all the way so we had to pull the plants up and replant them into smaller green bags, which will be more easily handled when we need to move them again... How resilient are these plants?! #veganicgarden #veganorganic #weneedroots #veganuk #veganpermaculture #wildlifegarden #perennialedibles #edibleperennials #trees 🌳 #treecrops #usefulplants #usefulplant #plantsforhealth #plantnursery #plantnurserydevon #wewantwildlife #plymouthvegans #sustainablelandscaping #sustainablefood #naturegarden #naturecare #plantcare #livekindly #loveplants #loveplants 🌿 #lowimpact

Some kind of fruit bat... Feels like heaven on the big allotment at the moment, an abundance of food to harvest from the perennials. I definitely have a gift for gathering fruit, I'm in my element when I'm grazing, I'm a natural grazer as I discovered over 20 years ago when dear friend and teacher #KenFern explained to me when I commented that I wasn't eating the evening meals that I was cooking for volunteers to share since being on The Field, he noted that he had observed that I was grazing all day. These plums are so good. A couple of other wingless fruit bats think so too. Pears and apples to come. Despite the noticeable wilt on the trees due to the heatwave it's not a bad crop. and that's just the canopy layer... so much more food per square foot than other manicured controlled parched drought hit land surrounding us. Maintenance is harvesting 😊 🌱 🍑🍏🍎🍐🍇🍓🥝🍒🌳 #trees 🌳 #treecrops #perennialedibles #edibleperennials #fruittrees #fruit #forestgarden #forestgardening #foodforest #naturallyvegan #veganplot #naturegarden #beegarden #backtoedengarden #permaculture #veganorganic #veganic #vegangardener #lowmaintenance #highyeild #allotmentgarden #wewantwildlife @veganorganicuk @growingyourgreens @crowdfunderuk

Arctic Kiwi: The Great Return🥝 . We had snow in June, frost late in June, and a very hard frost in mid June that wiped out almost all of the flowers and most of the leaves. Swipe left for miracle fruit! Birds, I’m watching you. . We may not have a great harvest this year but both the female fruit baring vine and the male pollinator vine have flushed out with a second round of leaves, that means there is a good chance next year will see us with our first large crop of kiwi! We’ve learned some important lessons and started a couple more vines in the yard. Always planting, always growing. So excited for these pears! This is the second year this tree has produced. Last year, I treasured the eleven pears that were growing on it and this year we have dozens! Sweet Chestnut 🌰 ‘Marigoule’. Looking forward in a few years to have chestnuts roasting on an open fire. . It was difficult to find a named variety that would be sent to Sweden that was at decent cost. . I planted this in-ground in a 90 liter pot. It survived the brutal winter we had. It supposed a self fertile variety, I guess we will find out. In fall I will plant it in its forever home. . I am looking for the Marival or Belle Epine chestnut trees if I can find it. Lovely snaps by @fermented.grape.juice from a visit and garden tasting tour at Fiddlehead Nursery/paradise a couple of weeks ago. About seven of us were lucky enough to taste some rare edible perennials that are grown there. I would recommend jumping at such an opportunity if you're lucky enough to have access to something like this. First chance to get out of the city and I absolutely loved it. Sorrel is my new favourite green and before this tour I thought I loathed it! First thing off the the local wholesaler and collected a load of used cardboard then to the little allotment to check on things, well to gorge on raspberries really, and eat a few blueberries from plants that really didn't look like they were going to make it earlier in the year, still amazed by what some Mulch and a water can do and the strength of plants to survive against all the odds... from there we moved on to the big allotment and after a quick water and seeing everything in the ground recovering nicely, we still have a few plants in pots on site needing attention so I planted a sad looking current and some very poorly Viola oderata (sweet violets) into the new bed under the apple tree them we got busy and created a new bed just up hill from the Jerusalem artichokes ... Here we noted no life in the parched depleted eroded soil... We planted some currants, thornless blackberries, violets and alpine strawberries and gooseberries, mulched by cardboard and a good few inches of wood chips... and so ends other day on the #veganplot #allotment for #naturallyvegan #allotmentgarden #allotmentsuk #veganicgarden #veganorganic #mycelium #myccorhizae #woodlandgarden #edibleperennials #Microorganisms #naturegarden #wildlifegardening #nodig #notill #notillgardening ♻️ #growinggreen #growyourown #vegangarden #lowimpactliving #sustainablelandscaping #foodnotlawns

There's a lot going on in this tiny little garden... We are enjoying the flourish of the edible Day Lilies Hemerocallis fulva, one of my favourites the Juneberry Amelanchier lamarkii which I've pretty much demolished all the fruit from, the lovely sweet crunchy white flowers of the Campanula persicifolia which taste like peas and cucumber and the abundance of thick dark green year round edible leaves that cover the ground, the exquisite alpine strawberries which fruit between April and October, the lush mat of heart shaped leaves and fronds of purple edible flowers so loved by the pollinators from the Campanula versicolor, the health giving deep green leaves from the walking stick cabbage intertwined with the tall frond of the insect attracting wild leek, the scattered Elephant Garlic soon to provide giant sweet and mild garlic bulbs, the lovely rustling shelter provided by the bamboo and the thriving pink and white currant cuttings put in pots early this year... Our tiny but flourishing front garden, in amidst the concrete jungle 🌱🐝🍓🦋🍒🐞🌿🕷️🌳

Woodland Gardening - a diversity of edible and otherwise useful plants, grown in a way which emulates nature, creating a system which works in harmony with nature, companion / integrated planting with a focus on perennials, or enhancing existing natural woodlands, with aims of low input, low impact, low maintenance, biodiversity, multi benefits and high yield. A healthy productive woodland garden will be multi layered - incorporating canopy, smaller trees, shrubs and herbaceous, ground cover, climbers, bulbs and roots, mycelium, water. Vegan-organic/Veganic/Stockfree Organic - broadly means any system of cultivation that excludes artificial chemicals, livestock manures, animal remains from slaughterhouses, genetically modified material and indeed anything of animal origin such as fishmeal. http://veganorganic.net Polyculture - Polyculture is agriculture using multiple crops in the same space, providing crop diversity in imitation of the diversity of natural ecosystems, and avoiding large stands of single crops, or monoculture. @veganorganicuk #veganuk #polyculture #veganic #edibleperennials #foodforests #forestgardening #woodlandgardening #naturallyvegan #veganplot

🇬🇧 Another one from my test patch of alliums is Allium moly. It likes a more moist soil so I planted it together with Hablitzia tamnoides (perennial spinach plant) which has similar preferences. Neither of them have had much moisture so far this year, and Allium moly seems to have survived both that and the competition. TBD if it survives and spreads next year, and what it tastes like. I also managed to persuade a bee to pose for the picture to demonstrate that this allium is also a good insect plant. 😉🐝 : : #allium #alliummoly #guldlök #provodling #edibleperennials #ätbaraväxter #ätbaraperenner #skogsträdgård #forestgarden #inmygarden #trädgårdsinspiration #biologiskmångfald #biodiversity #trädgårdsdesigner #gardendesigner #grubbygardens #hållbarätbarnjutbar

The Woodland Garden A woodland garden is potentially the most productive system for growing food plants and otherwise useful plants and is suitable for small container gardens to large farms and beyond. A wide range of plants can be grown in a way that mimics a natural woodland but with a diversity of species being chosen with productivity in mind. Thus you can have tall growing fruit and nut trees as the canopy layer of the woodland, various smaller trees and shrubs beneath these with climbing plants growing into the trees. Smaller plants that are tolerant of shade can be grown under the trees and shrubs. All of the smaller trees shrubs, and ground cover plants are sheltered from weather extremes such as wind, heat and cold. They can thrive in the protective conditions provided by the woodland providing diversity and variety year round. A woodland garden requires very little maintenance once it is established, just like a natural woodland, the deep roots of many species bring up nutrients and water from deep in the soil, ground cover retains water, prevents drought, prevents erosion, leaf fall provides fertiliser, and deters weeds, the diversity invites predators... so watering, weeding, fertiliser, shelter, and 'pest' control are all managed by the system. Thus we can grow more food on less land with much less effort, leaving plenty of time harvesting and maintaining pathways for access. #forestgardening #trees 🌲 #treecrops #forestgardening #forest #foodforestry #roberthart #fruit #nuts #poweredbyplants #wfpb #wfpbno #naturegardener #perennialedibles #edibleperennials #edibleleaves #edibles #edibleplants #woodlandplants #woodlandgarden #woodlandgardens

You’ve found me, in my natural environment! 🌿 (read story below!) • • • I had such a pleasant time at @fiddleheadnursery in Kimberley ON, I needed to share it with all of you! 🌾🍃🌿 As quant as can be, Ben - the owner and resident gardener - toured our Grey County Fam group around for the day and showed off all the wonderful things to eat in his edible perennial gardens. With a green house to one side stocked full of beautiful plants, books, teas, and more, I was in love! 💚 Fiddlehead Nursery sits beneath beautiful rolling hills, and a gorgeous natural landscape making it the cutest little sight for a garden you could think of. Ben shared many recipe ideas with us, including salads and roasts using the plants he got us to try. Tasting our way through the afternoon, our tour ended with a stroll through the green house to purchase anything we enjoyed trying ourselves... for only $3 for the personal tour, I would say it was definitely worth it!! 🌾 • • • You can find out more about Fiddlehead Nursery: Edible Landscaping by visiting them on Facebook and by checking out the link to ’Rural Gardens’ on the Grey County Tourism website - visitgrey.ca ! 🍃 PS. #redcurrants might be my new favorite fruit. These hardy little bushes produce abundantly despite near total neglect, and despite growing in a spot that’s so shady it’s one of the few corners of the farm that isn’t blanketed in 5ft tall ragweed at the moment. I briefly considered hanging on to some of these to share with a few extra special farmer’s market patrons this weekend, but in the end concluded that the nutrition I get from these berries is worth a lot more to me than whatever cash I might be able to exchange them for. Priorities! Mother Nature says red currants are what’s for lunch today and I’m happy to oblige :) 👅🤙🍒

The Romans are to blame for all this ground elder (Aegopodium podagraria), they brought it with them on their many invasions & it too is just as invasive (but slightly quicker & doesn’t carry any weapons) Many gardeners dislike it because it tends to dominate & eventually overrun flower borders if left to it’s own devices... It is extremely valuable for bugs though, as demonstrated in these pictures.. Many a bug has munched & been sustained by its abundance... Its leaves are also rather palatable to use human animals too, they’re foraged for wild salads & added to pesto recipes... It belongs to the carrot family (the Apiaceae) so be super careful if you decide to try it.. Some of those family members will make you sick 🤢 #groundelder #aegopodiumpodagraria #invasivespecies #edibleplants #forage #wildplants #apiaceae #eattheweeds #edibleperennials #bloodyromans

Dock verkar cikoria ha dålig överlevnadsförmåga hos mig. Kan det vara sorken? 🇬🇧 Very special delivery from a small nursery in the north of Sweden that specializes in edible perennials. This year’s delivery contained some good eating sorts of hosta and daylily, a ground cover sort of comfrey, claytonia sibirica and a very beautiful sort of chicory.

I have spent the day at an event on a nearby island to spread the word about Grubby Gardens, edible perennials and biodiversity. Tired now but happy 😊 : : #trädgårdsdesign #trädgårdsdesigner #gardendesigner #biologiskmångfald #biodiversity #flerårigagrönsaker #ätbaraperenner #edibleperennials #grubbygardens #hållbarätbarnjutbar

🇬🇧 My Bistorta officinalis has passed its good-to-eat period and gone into its nice-to-look-at phase. It will then have a not-so-pretty period during the summer when it has a rest which, together with the fact that it likes to spread itself out should be taken into consideration when choosing where to plant it. Young leaves are best cooked, so it is another perennial spinach plant. : : #storormrot #bistortaofficinalis #ätbaraväxter #flerårigagrönsaker #edibleperennials #trädgårdsinspiration #alltomträdgård #skogsträdgård #forestgarden #trädgårdsdesigner #gardendesigner #grubbygardens #hållbarätbarnjutbar

Summer open house this Saturday 9-5. Buy-1-get-1-free on all annuals and strawberries, 20% off all other plants! Plant propagation demonstration at 2pm: propagating woody perennials from semi-softwood cuttings. Grafting demonstration at 3pm. Mulberries are ripe and available for sampling off the trees, and there may still be a few strawberries and goumi berries to try. #plantsale

It turns out that it is possible to grow oca in south east Queensland. This is our harvest from oca tubers planted in a recycled polystyrene produce box. It’s modest, some of the tubers are small, but it was an experiment that turned out better than I expected. Growing notes: I used top quality potting mix, positioned the box in a spot that got morning sun and arvo shade, and I watered it daily, or thereabouts. My climate is warm temperate with warm, wet summers and cool, dry winters with occasional frosts. Elevation 720m. A couple of light frosts last week nipped the foliage and I was eager to see how things went so I harvested a smidgen early. If they taste good, I’ll plant a bigger patch in the ground in spring. Hooray for successful experiments! #oca #nzyam #oxalistuberosa #edibletubers #edibleperennials #permaculturefarm #growyourownfood #backyardharvest #homegrown

Malva! The beautiful mint patch in my garden. It's not invasive with some well timed shovel cutting mid-Marchish. Will be harvesting selected stems for this year's tea supply before it flowers. Bees go absolutely nuts on it. #mint #beeflower #ecogarden #edibleperennials
