Spring is finally arriving on The Palouse. An important aspect of transitioning to regenerative agricultural practices is in integrating animals into the healthy life cycles of the soil, plants and humans. While we all readily acknowledge that humans, animals and plants are living systems, soil also is a living system contrasted to dirt which is the absence of the living microbial communities. Dirt is not alive. Soils, plants, animals and humans form a highly specialized integrated system. Civilizations rise and fall based on the stewardship of their agricultural lands for food and fiber. Agriculture is a key factor in climate change. Agricultural practices are significant factors in mitigating climate change. We share our farm with a flock of 50 wild turkeys. We benefit from them. They eat bugs, scratch around and are part of the living cycles; most of all, we like their poop, natural fertilizer. We do not incorporate anhydrous nitrogen fertilizer in our practices that degrades the soil. We do not incorporate glyphosate or Round Up as a weed suppressant or desiccant that compromises the living microbial ecosystem that defines soil in our practices as well. It is important to know your farmer and equally important to know your farmer’s practices. #regenerativeagriculture #gogreen #bethechange #climatechange #drawdown #craftbrew #bread #beer #homebrew #farmtotable #sustainableagriculture #guthealth #soilhealth #noglyphosate #momsacrossamerica #spokane

Solution #4 PLANT-RICH DIET . Eating a heavily meat based Western diet " comes with a steep climate price tag: one fifth of global emissions." "According to a 2016 study, business-as-usual emissions could be reduced by 70% through adopting a vegan diet." It would also save "1 trillion in annual health-care costs." "If 50% of the worlds population adopted a 2,500 calorie a day diet and reduced meat consumption, we estimate at least 26.7 gigatons of emissions could be avoided" as well as "39.3 gigatons of emissions saved from avoiding deforestation of land." Reduced Food Waste and Plant-Rich Diet solutions go hand in hand in reducing emissions. By 2050, avoided emissions could equate to 26.2 gigatons of carbon dioxide if 50% of food waste is reduced. ⠀ Reducing waste also avoids the deforestation for additional farmland, preventing 44.4 gigatons of additional emissions. ⠀ By 2050, 70.53 gigatons of CO2 could be reduced! #food #foodwaste #waste #reducewaste #drawdown #projectdrawdown #sustainability #carbon #sustainable #renewable #energy #earth #reduce

Yesterday I was in Sunbury for a #KidX talk and despite many passionate speakers preeching on the different ways to save our natural world what inspired me the most was the age of the speakers. A 13 year old boy who had travelled 12 hours on a bus to be there. A 16 year old who had come from interstate and spoke with the knowledge of a climate scientist and another lad who looked 17 who Skyped in. Skyped in because a video call was the least harmful impact on the environment. They weren't the youngest either. A 9 year old educated us about micro plastics and how we can avoid them! Leaders, years younger than me, helped me believe that the world will be saved. 🌏 There are 9 year olds more passionate and knowledgeable than you and that is ok! That is GOOD because you're not alone in this. People of all walks of life believe in this cause and when you're tired they're right behind you shouting about plastic pollution, political action and green energy. Don't be disheartened that they are younger than you and more passionate then you ever were but feel inspired! Society keeps inspiring people younger and younger to care about climate change... And together we can build a better future. 4th best way to combat CC? Eating plant based! Best thing YOU can do, hands down, to beat this crisis? Limit food waste

According to the book Drawdown, food waste is number three on the list of ways to reduce carbon emissions and it’s effect on global warming. Much of the food that is produced never makes it to the table. A lot of food is thrown out before it’s consumed due to “sell by” and “best before” labeling. Then there is food that is rejected because of bumps and bruises, restaurants that serve too much, and spoilage in refrigerators. Food waste is greatest in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, industrialized Asia and Europe. #drawdown #globalwarming #climatechange #foodwaste #carbonemissions #foodspoilage #environment #savetheplanet #reducecarbonemissions #reducefoodwaste #combatglobalwarming #earthfriendlyideas #planetearth #globalinitiatives #globalawareness #climateandenvironment #humanintervention #earthsteward #lesswaste #reducewaste #bestpractices #helptheenvironment

⋒ READ / SHARE ⋒ ⁣⁣⁣ Today is #WorldWaterDay , and to help draw attention to the many issues our species causes to its availability + purity, I wanna have a quick chat about farming.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ ⋒ PROBLEM ⋒⁣⁣⁣ Currently, agriculture is the greatest contributor to water scarcity on the globe, with conventional farming practices accounting for 70 percent of the water consumed.⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ At the moment, one-fifth of the world's population lacks safe drinking water - and though there are a myriad of issues which have created this reality - the main one, according to the @unitednations , is the gross mismanagement of resources (bad irrigation).⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ By 2050, we’ll have 9-10 billion people to feed, which means we will need to produce 70% more food in the next 30 years than we have in the past 10,000. To achieve this responsibly, we are going to have to get creative in maintaining balance btwn water availability and agricultural production.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Right now, 25 percent of the world’s agriculture is grown in areas under high water stress. This figure doubles when looking at irrigated cropland, which produce 40 percent of global food supply.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ ⋒ SOLUTIONS ⋒⁣⁣⁣ The good news amongst this worrying world water info, is that many companies are already at work providing sustainable solutions. One of these companies ( #ad ), is @boweryfarming , who are revolutionizing the current agricultural system by producing through one of the few future farming practices that exemplify this ‘less is more’ agricultural scenario. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Their indoor #NYC based farms, grow an assortment of leafy greens and herbs using ZERO pesticides and 95% LESS WATER than traditional agriculture. If you live in the New York area, you can support their responsible food production by getting your mouths on @BoweryFarming ‘s good green greens at places like @wholefoodsnyc + @foragersnyc ... which on world water day, is one of many ways to celebrate progressive change. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If you’re not in #NY and know someone who is, send this lil post over to them to spread these watery words ⋒⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Either way, I wish you all a beautiful water conscious day xx H

#1 TOP SOLUTION REMOVE AND BAN HFC REFRIGERANTS . HFC refrigerants (hydrofluorocarbons) used to be a greener alternative to CFC's and HCFC's. These chemicals are used to absorb and release heat to enable chilling in refrigerators and air-conditioners. "HFC's have 1,000 to 9,000 time greater capacity to warm the atmosphere than carbon dioxide." "Through an amendment to the Montreal Protocol, the world will phase out HFC's- starting with high-income countries in 2019, then some low-income countries in 2024 and others in 2028. “MAGIC”. This is a photo of our friend Karen, an accomplished pastry baker from Houston who is now working with a shop in Lima, Peru. She travelled up to our Palouse Country to visit our Jedi baker, Shaun Thompson Duffy at The Grain Shed. While having been a baker for years, Karen had never walked in a field of wheat before. Karen and Shaun visited the farm and she was “blown away”. It was magic for her. Magic is when reality exceeds expectation. This is a field of a rare winter wheat, Red Russian, that was widely grown in the early 1900’s in the fertile hills of the Palouse Country of Eastern Washington. In the February 2015 issue on The Bread Lab’s website, James Beard award winning Chef Marc Vetri notes, “we tested different recipes for pasta with the same wheat, we found that it made a beautiful product. Most likely, the gluten in the Red Russian wheat, although high in protein, was a weaker gluten and its structure was not strong enough to make bread. But for pasta, it’s probably some of the best wheat you can use, and the flavor of the pasta — just cooked on its own with no accompaniment — was like nothing I had ever tasted”. That recommendation we good enough for us. We have grown out, increasing this beauty for some years. And it is Magic. Oh, yeah, Shaun makes an awesome bread with the Red Russian as well….and Joel and Teddy make a most fantastic hefeweizen……no glyphosate, no anhydrous ammonia fertilizer, regenerative farming… extreme landracers….….just say’in. #regenerativeagriculture #bread #pasta #craftbeer #sustainability #bethechange #farmtotable #gogreen #drawdown #slowfood #heirloomseeds #guthealth #stewardsoftheland #loveourplanet #noglyphosate #soil #momsacrossamerica #biodiversity

Wild, Edible Greens 🍀 St. Patrick’s Day is for celebrating all things green. Here at Soil Centric we take that to mean an opportunity to celebrate the miracle of photosynthesis! These little greenies happen to be edible: 1. Oxalis otherwise known as Sour Grass (leaves & flowers are edible & lemony). 2. Miners lettuce (with tiny white flowers) & young fennel (distinct licorice smell). 3. Dandelion greens (a superfood & a medicine). 4. Wild Onion Lily (smells unquestionably like onion). Do not forage unless you are 💯 % certain you know a plant 🌱 before you eat it. Otherwise just admire them for feeding the soil and soaking up atmospheric carbon! Let’s celebrate spring and the perfusion of green living plants, including the most humble and maligned.

A year ago I had just returned from #purpose2018 in Sydney. My standout from the two days was listening to #paulhawken talk about #drawdown and the science around educating women being one of the most powerful climate reversing endeavours we can embark on. His presentation continues to shape my professional life significantly and the role we can play in lifting women out of poverty by empowering them to solve their own problems. My contribution to this end is varied and looks like many things and can be hard to measure or quantify. As does the contribution of many others. But what I know deep in my heart is that having this clarity around what’s important opens up opportunity that wouldn’t exist without it. What have your transformative moments been and how are they shaping your pathway???

So what are #regenerativefarmpractices you ask? Take a look at this series of photos from our farm. In the first photo, we #notill planted #nongmo corn into a living #covercrop of red clover, hairy vetch and volunteer wheat. In the second, the corn is up and we are seeding rye grass, hairy vetch and crimson clover directly into it. In the third photo, the corn has reached maturity and is drying down before harvest. The final photo shows the rye grass, hairy vetch and clover regrowing after it and the corn stalks have been grazed by our cattle. This regrowth will feed our cattle again the following spring and absorb #carbon while preventing wind and soil erosion through the winter months. We will be talking about these practices and more at the #drawdown Headwaters event this Monday. “Mostly Sunny Partly Cloudy” View over Pacific Ocean from Ventura, 3/16/2019 o3 dominant, 84deg Our weather whiplash loop continues and I’m inspired to resume work on my climate series: #mostlysunnypartlycloudy -As #climatecollapse takes effect the narrative of an engineered techno fix ( #geoengineering ) continues to be gently pushed by media without honest coverage of the well-studied deep environmental harms it would cause. With true #drawdown solutions like #regenerativeagriculture being systematically ignored or discredited in media and handcuffed through a corrupt farm bill, and while any political or celebrity figure who even mentions regulating aviation emissions is discredited as a chemtrailer, it’s essential we begin to openly discuss regulation of geoengineering as citizens of the planet. Geoengineering must be regulated fairly for all humans. This is the next GMO, with benefits and disasters and will play the largest factor in controlling global food supply. #anthropocene #anthropoceneart #ryansnowart

Thinking about the climate? Wondering how we can take more affirmative action?
