"so much is happening now; you must be patient like someone who is sick, and confident like some one who is recovering; for perhaps you are both. And more: you are also the doctor, who has to watch over himself. But in every sickness there are many days when the doctor can do nothing but wait. And that is what you, insofar as you are your own doctor, must now do, more than anything else." - Rainer Maria Rilke in Letters to a Young Poet #8 #rainermariarilke #letterstoayoungpoet #doctorandpatient #waiting #patience #recovery

When the doctor 👩🏻‍⚕️ becomes a patient! 6 weeks ago I noticed a tender-ish pink nodule on the back of my right hand and, in full disclosure, I tried to “pop” it to no avail. After weeks of being asked by my hubby: “When are you going to get rid of that wart-thing on your hand?” — I asked [read: begged] Becks to remove it. [To see her handiwork, check out today’s story.] She did a fab job and now as my skin heals, I await the pathology report — What could it be??? A skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma)? A wart-like viral infection (molluscum)? A cyst? A foreign body reaction? Dystrophic calcification (when calcium deposits inside the skin in response to a minor trauma)? Or something more bizarre? One of the (many) fun things about my job is exploring what something could be — in medical terms, this is called a “differential diagnosis” — and then with help of a biopsy achieve (hopefully, but not always 😪) a definitive diagnosis and with that a prognosis (a forecast of what to expect going forward) and ultimately the ability to develop a treatment plan. Fingers crossed that this is just some type of response to trauma and not some rare infection or skin cancer.

My Godfather, my second creator, my mentor... DR. RAMESH (dental and maxilofacial surgeon) . Through all the surgeries and procedures as Doctor and Patient we complimented each other. A never felt before and will never ever have a bond with anyone else like we have had. Who knew years ago during the surgeries that Id be facing the public and the camera as a prominent actor. The confidence i have because of this face that has been crafted by you since years. its been 2 years since you left your body... The first day shoot of #Ranam and i shared my grief with @therealprithvi chetan in the U.S helpless not being able to be beside you on your last day. Yet i still feel your presence and i still have not digested this humongous loss. Your blessings have been immensely working wonders. I always remain at your feet. I will continue making you proud🌹👨‍⚕️🧒 #Godfather #bilateralcleftlipandpalate #cleftlipandpalate #cleft #maxilofacialsurgery #doctorandpatient

It’s a year today that I finished radiotherapy. I have spent the day fixing broken bones and doing some tricky trauma cases. So, the note I wrote to thank my team a year ago seems particularly poignant in the circumstances.. “thank you for fixing me up, so that I’m able to go back to fixing people up” #lifeaftercancer #radiotherapy #activetreatment #lifebeyond #cutpoisonburn #surgerychemoradio #rt #tnbc #triplenegativebreastcancer #breastcancer #doctor #patient #doctorandpatient #thisiswhatasurgeonlookslike #thisiswhatasurvivorlookslike #oneyearon

“Something’s Happened to the Doctor Patient Relationship” by Dr. E. Steven Lenger • “The doctor / patient relationship is one predicated on trust. In any relationship, a certain degree of trust is eroded when one feels that the other isn’t 100% present during a conversation. The doctor / patient relationship is no different and suffers when the inputting of EMR (electronic medical records) seems to take precedence over communicating directly to the patient. - Making eye contact, observing body language, and focused listening are crucial components to the history taking and even the physical exam. Picking up on the nuances communicated non-verbally is important in determining what is wrong even before ordering the myriad of tests necessary for a diagnosis. For example, when examining the abdomen for signs of pain, I would be sure to look at the patient’s face while asking questions, because sometimes a patient’s “no that doesn’t hurt” is contradicted by a change in facial expression. - Unfortunately, we have become a society umbilically attached to smartphones. Conversations suffer when one or more of the participants is only half listening, the other half reading a text message. This degradation of social interaction has carried over to the exam room.....” • Read the full article on our website at the link in the bio 🙏 . . . #creationsmagazine #doctorpatient #doctorpatientrelationship #doctorandpatient #vaccines #vaccinedamage #doctors #doctorsappointment #health #healthylifestyle #holistichealing #holistic #holisticwellness #holisticliving

My first ever bathroom mirror selfie. I’ve reached peak social media. 😂 - To say I’m a competitive person would be an understatement. I live and breathe competition. I love it. From tests when I was a student to racing cars or even a game of water pong 😉 , I love that competition pushes me to my limit. I’m not even mad if I lose. Winning an easy game is not nearly as satisfying as losing a really epic game of water pong with double overtime. It’s simply about reaching one’s full potential. Being pushed to the limit. - I’ve been in a competition with myself of sorts for years now. And if there’s one thing I don’t like, it’s when I’m not good at something. This is one of those things. Contrary to appearances, I have actually lifted a barbell in my life 💪🏼. In fact, I’ve been putting considerable time and effort into both #bodybuilding and #powerlifting ever since college. But here’s the thing, I’m really not that good at it. Despite counting calories, body fat calipers, dozens of spreadsheets, reading countless books on fitness, and following a variety of routines religiously, I feel like I’m never moving fast enough toward the results I seek. To be the best version of myself. - Everyone is dealt different cards. What may be easy for me may be difficult for you, and vice versa. But that doesn’t seal our fate. Perhaps the biggest reason for my continued frustration in my fitness endeavor is that after a few months of consistent lifting and caloric surplus, a Crohn’s flare can rapidly derail me. 10 pounds, 15 pounds, and all the strength gains accompanying the muscle, gone like that, and back to square one. - That doesn’t stop me though. Is it harder for me? Sure. But life’s not fair, and I’m lucky that maybe some other things have been easier for me. I’ll keep at it, tuning my diet, tuning my sleep, tuning everything I can, because the only one who determines when I’m done is me. - After my #remicade infusion, I was tired as hell per usual. So I napped and got my ass in the gym. What’s your excuse? - #riseandgrind #crohnsdisease #ulcerativecolitis #doctor #doctorsofinstagram #doctorandpatient #health #wellbeing #studymotivation

Had my annual physical yesterday. I’ve created a great working relationship with my doctor. We discussed test results. Reviewed medications. Discussed data from research. We were in agreement on all our topics. I thanked her st the end and she said “I didn’t do anything” I responded “ you’re encouragement means a lot”. I feel as if she’s on my team! #collageartists #mandalas #magazinecollage #magazinecollageart #magazinecollageartist #artandhealth #artandhealing #artandhealthcare #doctorpatient #doctorpatientrelationship #doctorandpatient #healthcareforall #healthcareprofessionals #healthcareprofessions #healthadvocate #healthadvocacy #healthcareadvocacy #narrativemedicine

#Repost @book.aisle #booksandnature • • • • • • We laughed together for a long time. When we had first met, her eyes were dull with pain-killing drugs and if she tried to talk, her face would contort with agonizing pain. I thought how radiantly beautiful she now looked. She stood up to leave and went to the door but then came back and kissed me. 'I hope I never see you again,' she said. Today is the 1 year anniversary of the day I finished chemotherapy. I very much dislike my hair a lot of the time - who knows what colour it is, or whether it’s curly or straight, or whether it really just wants to resemble a bad 80s quiff. But when I look back at the way it was this time last year, I am grateful for it being there at all! Chemo was not kind, and left me with a host of side effects I’m still dealing with now, not least the bone crushing tiredness and the stiff joints. But even though there were many times I thought I couldn’t, I did it, and here we are a year later, trying to do what I can to live as well as I can. For any doctors out there, we’ve really no idea most of the time what we put our patients through - this was far tougher than I ever imagined - and I’ve learned a great deal by being on the other side. #chemotherapy #oneyearon #oneyearpostchemo #postchemohair #lifeaftercancer #lifeafterbreastcancer #triplenegativebreastcancer #tnbc #breastcancer #doctor #patient #doctorandpatient #patientanddoctor #postcancerlife #cancerrecovery #keeplookingforward

🌻THE REALITY OF RECOVERY🌻 . 🌻It’s ok if all you did today was survive. . 🌻It can seem externally that everyone is living great lives. That people with illness, injuries and those who have experienced trauma are successful. . 🌻While you might be at home in bed unable to move. It’s very easy to fall into the comparison trap. But your story is unique to you, as is your experience. . 🌻It’s fine to have bad days - I now rephrase them rest & recovery days as they are just that. . 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻 It may seem to other people that I’m successful - so I must be ok right? Well yesterday I drove for a 4& 1/2 hr round trip in the car. This was massive for me to be able to do this. I paid the price for it the following day and spent most of it in bed exhausted and in pain. . However, this experience reminded me of how I used to be like that all the time, only far worse. I ‘functioned’ (by functioned I mean struggled) for nearly 2 years like that. I was much better today after my rest day yesterday. Which further reminded me of how I used to be and how I am now. . Ups and downs happen when you’re recovering, and will happen in no logical linear order. They are improvements and what appear to be disimprovements. . But what I learned from my minor dip into a rest day was how appreciative I am to be improving. I’m also learning to be proud of myself for how I managed to through college in constant pain and exhaustion. I barely survived most days. . I really appreciate feeling well they days that I do now as a result. It’s ok to have rest days in between too!! 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

🚑💉INTERNATIONAL ADDISON’S DAY - 29th MAY 2019 🚑💉 . 🚑 Today is International Addison’s day. It’s also President John F. Kennedy’s birthday, who lived with Addisons disease. . 🚑 Addison’s Disease is a rare endocrine condition, so it’s great to see efforts like this to increase awareness. It’s also a life threatening and potentially fatal condition. . 🚑 Addison’s Disease is a type of Adrenal Insufficiency- a condition in which a small triangle shaped organ which sits on top of your kidneys - doesn’t make enough/ normal amounts of steroid hormones - primarily cortisol. . 🚑There are different types of Adrenal Insufficiency: 1️⃣Primary Adrenal Insufficiency - This is due to a ‘primary’ problem with the adrenal glands themselves, failing to produce enough cortisol. Addison’s disease falls under this category, which is an autoimmune condition. Another condition called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia can also cause Primary AI, along with a tumor of the adrenal gland, TB, Sepsis in Meningitis and sometimes the cause is unknown (this is called idiopathic - medical speak for we have no explanation). This is a lifelong diagnosis. . 2️⃣Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency: is where a hormone (substance in the blood which sends signals to certain parts of the body to do a certain thing) fails to turn on a lightswitch effectively to get the adrenal gland to make cortisol. The problem is from a hormone called ACTH - which I refer to as the light switch of the adrenal gland - this hormone is made in a little gland in the brain called the Pituitary gland. There are many causes of this - some include: a tumor in the pituitary gland, use of steroids for other conditions eg for Crohn’s disease, asthma. Also suddenly stopping long term steroids which someone may be taking as mentioned previously. Another condition causing this is called Sheehan’s Syndrome - very rare condition. In some people this is lifelong condition, in others it may improve. Secondary is more common than primary. . 🚑 Both of these conditions can result in an Adrenal Crisis which is severe cortisol deficiency and is potentially fatal. . 🚑I’ll post more in my stories about these conditions!! Look there! 👀

Missed the spot with the veins in the back of my hand. There was blood all over the place, even the anaesthetist himself called it a dog’s breakfast. So the cannula had to go in my elbow crease, which is fine, but less comfortable for me. While the anaesthetist was trying again, my surgeon stuck his head in to the tiny bay and joked “got any veins?” And leaned against the doorway chewing a lolly while the anaesthetist accessed my veins, all the while the three of us exchanged stories about parenting boys. #onlyhuman #weareallhuman #doctorandpatient #surgeryday #preop #anaesthesia #breastreconstruction #breastcancerawareness #hospital #breastcancersurvivor #needles

Dipping my toes back into the world of work this week. Woke up feeling a bit brighter today thanks to yesterday’s Vit D. Met with a colleague at Northern Cancer Alliance who’s the MacMillan and Cancer UK GP lead for our region to chat through some of the projects they’re working on and how I might get involved. I hope and need good things to come from my rubbish diagnosis. I need to make it count and make a difference for others and improve cancer services. I have a patient, clinical and leadership voice that I hope can positively influence the outcomes for others diagnosed with cancer. Great to put some work clothes on too #clinicalleadership #doctorandpatient #cancer #appendixcancer #appendixcancerawareness #nhs #makeadifference

Starts from falling in love with this stethoscope , we choose a way ,right to say is endless...🤪 There are several criss and cross on the way which are meant to pass. So suffer now and live the rest of your life as a doctor 📚 because it is much more important to know what sort of a patient has a disease than what sort of a disease a patient has.” 🤷‍♀️ Motto: Work hard to save love and life 💞 #doctorsworld #stethoscope #Sufferings #doctorandpatient #loveandlife

🇬🇧: I just got this picture from my last week to the hospital to get my 4th round of rabies shot. These gentlemen helped me to get it done, Niko to the left is a super nice guy from the BJJ community that we have just chat online regarding my visit there and I also mentioned I need to get vaccinated and he just arranged everything regardless. Guy in the middle is the doctor...
