Saint Laurence's Gate is a barbican which was built in the 13th century as part of the walled fortifications of the medieval town of Drogheda in Ireland. It is a barbican or defended fore-work which stood directly outside the original gate of which no surface trace survives. It has been described as one of the finest of its kind, and is designated as a national monument. The original names for Laurence Street and Saint Laurence Gate were Great East Street and Great East Gate, respectively. In the 14th century, the street and gate were renamed because they led to the hospital of Saint Laurence, which stood close to the Cord church. #drogheda #discoverireland #ireland #instaireland #irish #instagram #instadaily #instacool #instapic #picoftheday #photooftheday #instagramhub #instagrammers #irelandsancienteast #photographer #photographyislife #photographylovers #sky #skylovers #monument #iphone #shotoniphone #life #positivevibes #memories #medieval #barbican #wanderlust #likeforlike #nofilter

📍Cahir Castle, County Tipperary One of our favourite aspects of travelling around Ireland is seeing just how much the historic beginnings of towns and villages continue to play such an important part on the landscape of the modern town. Cahir is very much an excellent example of this . Ireland is full of picturesque castles and we'd be the first to admit that it's easy to fall into a 'seen one, seen them all' mindset as you make your way around the country. Each has its own charms and fascinating history but it can be a great idea to prioritise some select castles to ensure you're not 'castled out' by the end of your trip. Keeping that in mind, Cahir Castle should be near the top of your list. Located in County Tipperary, Cahir makes a great day trip destination alongside the nearby Rock of Cashel. Cahir's wonderfully intact features and the standard of the tour ensure that this is a gem among Irish castles that shouldn't be missed . . #ireland   #irelandsancienteast #irish   #tipperary #ireland_gram #castle   #travel #visitireland #ancienthistory   #instaireland #discoverireland #tourireland #igtravel #streetscape #tourismireland #bucketlist #yourwayireland #wanderlust #loveireland #instatravel #vacation #travelgram #irelandtravel #irishcentral #roadtrip #travelbug #wanderireland

Doing my best James Larkin pose at the Giant’s Causeway. The rock formation was made when the giant Fionn mac Cumhaill threw a loada stones into the sea so he could get over to Scotland to have it out with the giant Benandonner, who’d been givin him grief. But turns out that was a shite idea because the Scottish giant was waaaaay bigger than Fionn. So he had to leg it back to Ireland. Benandonner followed him and only for his wife, Fionn woulda been toast. She disguised Fionn as a baby and when the big Scottish fella saw the baby, he thought to himself: “If the baby is that size, I don’t fancy meeting his da.” So off he went back to Scotland. Some scientists say the Causeway was actually formed by burning and cooling lava flows. But sure, we’ll never know the real story. 📸 by @loulizzie3 . .. ... .. . #discoverireland #Igersireland #instatravel #Northernireland #giantscauseway #mythology
