Resting In Peace
The body of a man who died of Ebola is exhibited to the family, before being taken away to be buried. Ebola Teatment Centre of Butembo, Democratic Republic of Congo.
One of the main challenge to contain and treat Ebola is the mistrust from the local population. Because the virus is so deadly, a significant part of the population think Ebola was brought by the international community to kill them. These beliefs make some infected people to flee when they know they are sick, because they fear health workers will kill them instead of curing them in the treatment center. Eventually this person will die, because there is no way to survive without treatment.
At the treatment center's morgue, the body is exhibited through a plastic sheet. Because the family can't get close to the corpse, so they don't get infected.
Photographing and showing death is never pleasant, but sometimes it is necessary to be able to tell the daily tragedy that is affecting some people.
Ebola is a tragedy affecting more and more people and it is far from being stopped in DR Congo.
