BREF ! Je vais faire le plein d’énergie avant mon retour. 🦁~ J’espère que vous avez apprécié mon périple. Je garde ces derniers jours pour moi 😌. #equateur #ecuador #sauvage #passeport #globetrotter #travel #eloideouf #roadtrip #trip #frenchtravel #wildlife #wildgeography #natgeo #canon #discover #nikon #lastpost #endofhollidays #inca #cyclopeanwalls #free

👇🏽 Mycenaean Architecture - Because of their warlike nature, it was important for them to build defensive structures. One of these types of structures was the citadel, a fortified city or part of a city. The Mycenaeans typically built their citadels on hilltops and contained most of the city inside of them, including the palace. The borders of the Mycenaeans' citadels were Cyclopean walls. Cyclopean walls were made from enormous stones and they were given that name because, according to legend, they were built by giants since the stones were so large. Inside of the walls of the citadels, the Mycenaeans built cisterns. Mycenae was located near the city of Corinth and, since it was built on a hilltop, the citadel was built in different levels. People would enter the citadel by way of a propylon, which was a large and elaborate gateway. The propylon of Mycenae is one of the most famous of the civilization and is called the Lion Gate because it's decorated with lion sculptures. #LionsGate #CyclopeanWalls #Cisterns #Mycenae

Cyclopean Walls of Itally Scattered throughout ancient Latium (the region in Italy where Rome was later founded) are the megalithic ruins of strangely built polygonal stone walls so stunningly unique, bizarre, and futuristic that historyans belive they were constructed by a prehistoric a now-extinct race of giants called Cyclopes. #mystery #lost #forbidden #walls #Itally #CyclopeanWalls #giants #cyclops #cyclopes #forgotten #fact #mysterious #ancient #CyclopeanWallsOfItally #bizarre

#mycenae #greece #history #legends #ellada #cyclopeanwalls

On the flat elevated #hill above the #Radimlja #stećak necropolis there are #remains of the #Illyrian structure of the #antique town of #Daorson. Daorson was the capital of a Hellenised Illyrian tribe called the Daorsi. The Daorsi lived in the valley of the Neretva River between 300 BC and 50 BC. Daorson was built around a central fort or #acropolis , surrounded by #cyclopeanwalls made of huge #stoneblocks (similar to those in Mycenae, in Greece). The #wall dates from the 4th century BC. The town of Daorson had the features of a #Hellenistic city. Its high degree of culture and civilization is evidenced by the fact it minted its own coins. The most valuable of the finds is a bronze helmet decorated with a series of Greek mythological figures, including Aphrodite, Nika, Heli, Dionysius, Muse, Pegasus. During the civil war between Caesar and Pompey both Daorson town and part of Daorsan tribe were destroyed by the Illyrian tribe Dalmatians, the alliances of Pompeians. The town of Daorson was discovered in 1891, and has never been fully investigated archaeologically. Today it is a #nationalmonument of #BosniaandHerzegovina. #history #archeology #povijest #historija #istorija #arheologija #heritage #culturalheritage #naslijeđe #BiH #BosnaiHercegovina #visitBiH #visitbosniaandherzegovina #visitherzegovina

Visiting ancient Mycenae this morning and marveling at the fact that it predates the Colosseum in Rome by over 1000 years. The first thing you encounter is the imposing Lion’s Gate, intimidating travelers since about 1250 BC.  We found the tombs of Clytemnestra and Aegisthus along with the Treasury of Atrius, which after last night’s performance, we would like to think is the tomb of Agamemnon.  Either way, wandering around this 2000 year-old citadel is enough to make you believe that the Cyclops were real. The only thing missing is Dr. Jennifer Udell, who might set us straight on a few things😊 #ancientgreece #mycenae #cyclopeanwalls #lionsgate #agamemnon #oresteia #dysfunctionalfamilies #curses #pilgrimage

The Lion Gate is the entrance to the citadel of Mycenae. This gate represents a combination of ashlar masonry and Cyclopean construction. The combination of these two architectural methods allow for the regular laying of large stones (that only the Cyclopes could move!). The opening of the gate utilizes a combination of a post and lintel system. Above the lintel lies the relieving triangle, featuring two lions flanking a column. Despite the lion carving weighing two tons, it still takes the pressure off of the lintel block below it. Absolutely incredible Bronze Age construction! . . . . #mycenae #μυκηνες #greece #greece 🇬🇷 #greekarchaeology #greekarchitecture #ancientarchitecture #ancienthistory #cyclopeanwalls #archaeology #archaeologist #exploregreece #exploretheglobe #exploretheworld #wanderlust #travelbag #travelgram #travelblogger #travelblog #travelpicsdaily #greecestagram #noedit #nofilter #travelphotography #ελλαδα #feelgreece #bronzeage

DAY 4 — THE CYCLOPEAN WALLS WERE EVERYTHING I COULD HAVE HOPED FOR AND MORE. Since the beginning of my classics education, I’ve been obsessed with Mycenae. Built almost 4000 years ago, no one truly knows how the Mycenaeans were able to create such stable walls out of such large stones. How did they get them up the mountain? How did they stack them? How were they so stable that they exist even today? It’s a mystery. The ancient Greeks in the times of Socrates couldn’t even figure it out, claiming that only the Cyclops could have built such impressive fortifications. One of the most impressive sights I saw was the Tomb of Agamemnon, or the Treadury of Atreus (depending on who you ask. It’s a massive Tholos built under a hill, and it was spectacular. It’s truly difficult to understand the scope of their masonry without being there yourself, but I hope these pictures help. This was hands down my biggest bucket list place to visit while in greece, and I was everything but disappointed. . 1. Past the entrance to the Lion Gate, a small area where a guard would have sat 2. Tholos of Agamemnon 3. Mycenae rich in gold👑 the magesic lion gate and a humble little back door💛 We were the earliest visitors that day and were wandering between stones and fig trees, following lizards and grasshoppers, when I spotted that lovely back door - a little adventure within an adventure. With or without gold, life surely was not easy there thousands years ago: houses were small, sun was harsh, people took sieges, battles and early death as an ordinary part of life. But at least Agamemnon had the best ever view from his window: green hills going up and down, innumerable fields of his grapes and corn soaking up the sun🌾 #latepost #greece #mycenae #ancient #ruins #gates #liongate #stone #cyclopean #cyclopeanwalls #civilization #travelling #itmakesmehappy #lovelovelove

The Tomb of Agamemnon, aka, the treasury of Atreus, Mycenae, 1250 b.c. The stones used to build it were so large that later ancient Greeks assumed that the Mycenean structures were made by giants, hence the term cyclopean masonry. The lintel stone above Sadie is the world's largest at 120 tons. #cyclopeanwalls #mycenae #beehivetomb #reallyfuckingold
