If you’re a regular beach walker, there’s no doubt you’ve stumbled across the white-styrofoam-like cuttlefish bone.
Contrary to their name, cuttlefish are not fish but Cephalopods. A cousin of the 🐙 octopus, 🦑 squid & nautilus, there basic body is a head containing all main organs,& tentacles. Unlike the 🐙, cuttlefish have 10 limbs 🖐🖐,with 2 extra tentacles used when hunting.
The Queens of Camouflage 👑 hide, the cuttlefish is a clever creature (they have the equivalent of 3 neuron bundles/brains 🧠 🧠 🧠!). Specialised cells in their skin called chromatophores, similar to pixels on a TV screen containing; allowing cuttlefish to change thousands of colours & patterns 🌈 🏁 . Add to this the ability to change the shape of their skin,& these crafty cuttles do their best to stay a step ahead of their predators, including 🦈, large 🐟 & seals.
Next time you’re walking at the beach & find a cuttlebone; have a closer look. If you find round holes these could be seal or 🐬 teeth marks; sharper marks are 🐠 & 🦈. #cuttlefish #cephalopod #australiansealife #creaturefeatures #adaptations #marinelife #chameleon #camouflage #australianmarinelife #victoriancoast #adaptations #beachdetectives #surfcoast #marinenationalparks #torquaybeach #whatisthat #seaanimals #beachcombing #weirdandwonderful
