Cover crop finally got planted today. Wish we got it done about a month ago but sometimes in farming you just have to do what you can, when you can. And with a big rain coming our way, at least I know they’ll get watered in well. These Dutch White Clover seeds are Nitro coated. This means a high-level of live rhizobium that will produce lots of nitrogen-producing nodules, which in turn, will create stronger, healthier plants. Also put in some fava beans for their nitrogen fixing. ***Tip of the day; fava beans fix over 2 times the amount of nitrogen than ANY other plant.*** This is all part of the “no-till” method which I have always thought makes the most sense for sustainable farming. Feed the soil and let it feed your plants. #sustainablefarming #sustainableagriculture #cannabisfarming #ganjafarma #clover #nitrocoated #covercrop #fertilizer #allgoodthings #healthy #soil #soilking #supersoil #richinsoil #feedyoursoil #feedyoursoul

Back in the days. I’ve gained, lost and learned so much since then and thankful for it all. It’s brought me to where I am now and now I have a much clearer vision. Let us remember that we are blessed to work with plant/earth medicine and to not let our egos be our guide. Find what you love and pursue it. It’s usually not the easiest yet in my opinion it is the most rewarding. I trust in ancestral guidance and at those times when I’m lacking that trust, they have a way to show up and remind me that I am supported. In the soil, the leaves, the branches, the tree trunks, the birds, bees, water, wind, fire and in the vibrations that I feel throughout my body. Cannabis in particular has helped me in more ways than I can count and it’s my heart full response to do all I can to help others commune with this plant spirit. Not just cannabis but all plant medicine, which is not always about what we put in or on our bodies but also what we put into/draw from the earth and all her inhabitants, seen and unseen. One of the greatest things one can do for self and others is to grow food/medicine. I’m not an expert on anything. I’m a student of life who wants to share what I learn, as that is constant, and relay the cosmic messages that I receive. Like the taproot of a plant, may we tap into our divine potential and... Why are volcanic and glacial soils so valuable for agriculture? 🌋 ⁣ ⁣ The simple answer is MINERALS. ⁣ ⁣ Most agricultural soils are slowly - or quickly - depleted of their fertility through destructive practices or leaching due to high precipitation. 😬⁣ ⁣ Imagine soil fertility as a bucket with a pin-prick leak. 🧐⁣ ⁣ Volcanoes spew the full spectrum of minerals that restore soil fertility for decades to centuries. (As long as erosion doesn't take place). The bucket is re-filled to the brim with balanced mineral nutrition. ⁣ ⁣ The same goes for glacial soils! Glaciers grind rock into dust as they move, leaving tremendous amounts of minerals in their wake. ⁣ ⁣ This is why glacial rock dust is a fantastic soil amendment! ⁣ ⁣ Wine growers know that the boldest wines come from these soil types. The most productive orchards and the tastiest vegetables are the same. 😋🍷🥗⁣ ⁣ @lacascinatopics

🍃🍂🌱Cover crops are a beneficial and often necessary part of the seasonal garden to both protect and enhance garden soil. Cover cropping solves the problem of leaving garden soil bare during the winter when wind and rain and frost heaving erode top soil and leach out nutrients. The use of cover crops creates garden soil that is fertile with the best structure to grow healthy plants. #vitalorganicsnorthwest #covercrop #knowledgeisflower #soilfoodweb #eugene #oregon #fertilize #organic #growyourfood

The choice between spending a rainy day in a classroom or planting some cover crop to get watered in by nature doesn’t really seem like much of a choice to me at all ☺️🙌🌧🌱. 💩 Here I am in my happy place, with blessed rain pouring down from the sky, compost under my fingernails, and the gracious, thirsty earth beneath me. 💩 Happy World Soil Day! 📷: @zazahoosh

World Soil Day! All about the cover crop! . . Lawn Island Farms - did an amazing job with this cover crop setup! 👨‍🌾💚 we also helped broad fork the soil just a tad 😉 . Utilizing natural practices ensures that people have safe and nutritious food for active and healthy life, without endangering essential ecosystems. Utilizing cover crops have immediate impacts on soil microbial community structure and function. Moreover, keeping soil covered over the winter; protects it from erosion and helps support all the beneficial life associated with it. It also gives weeds less opportunity to establish, meaning cleaner beds for sowing or planting in spring! What am I doing in a 110-acre hazelnut orchard? I had the privilege of working on soil and crop nutrition with this farm in the Willamette Valley. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I took over 10 soil samples from 10 different zones across the orchard, seeking explanations for variations in production. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All 10 tests were almost IDENTICAL, giving no explanation for production differences. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But at least now the farmer knows to only take one soil sample across the entire orchard in the future! (And I know not to spend a day taking 10.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The similarity in results also gave me a lot of confidence in the accuracy of soil testing in terms of sample to sample variation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The results led to cover crop and trace mineral foliar recommendations with the goal of increasing harvest weight and nutrient density. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #oregonhazelnuts #organictransition #soilhealth #soilmatters #soilbuilding #regenerativeagriculture #biologicalfarming #notillsoil #organicmatter #soilcarbon #remineralize #covercrop #planthealth #plantnutrition #soildoctor #soiltesting

Oh joy! We got our organic cover crop seeds in the mail and have already begun casting them around our garden and surrounding yard, just in time for the rain! In this picture, starting at 12:00 and going clockwise we have: 1) Purple Vetch 2) Soil Builder premium mix 3) Red Clover 4) Biomaster Peas 5) Cayuse Oats Thanks @pvfsgroworganic for offering the wonderful selection! Why plant a cover crop? Lots of reasons. The growth will be a live, healthy forage for our goats, poultry and resident critters. The mix adds biodiversity to our garden, attracting beneficial insects and all that feed on the bugs. The cover crops improve soil health, help water penetration and reduce erosion. There are lots of additional reasons to plant a cover crop, but they center around fertility, and offer beauty as a bonus. Do you grow a cover crop? Do tell! #RanchoReiso #garden #gardening #vegetablegarden #growfood #urbangarden #hortaculture #agriculture #biodynamic #organic #covercrop #covercrops #seeds #seed #fertility #soilstructure #soilfoodweb #soil #soilhealth #growsoil

Companion plants taking over! I use a low growing mix which has Dutch White and Palestine Stawberry clover seeds that are "nitrocoated". That just means they are inoculated with the proper bacteria for nitrogen fixing right out of the gate.

December 5 is World Soil Day – a day to celebrate the importance of soil. This year's campaign, Be the Solution to Soil Pollution, aims to raise awareness and call people to action to #StopSoilPollution. Soil health affects plant health, human wellbeing, and even the future of our planet. Because of this interconnectedness, sustainable soil management practices are essential. Here at the farm, our goal is to minimize our dependance on outside agricultural inputs like fertilizers, which can cause nutrient imbalances in the soil. This year we experimented with using different cover crops to “fertilize” the soil, as a potential alternative to agricultural inputs.

A live and learn moment with the cover crop. Despite spreading a mix of grasses, forbs, legumes, and beans, the only ones still there and germinating are the beans. Why? Because the birds ate the other things. Classic new farming mistake. I had hoped that by broadcasting seed just hours before big rain storms that that would put the birds off. Unfortunately, it looks like no. What's left are the beans, which are sprouting, sheep manure, hay residue, and some of the short annuals that sprout this time of year. At least I'm making good on the request from the prior owners to feed the birds. #liveandlearn #newbie #rookie #soil #covercrop #getitgrazier

Today is #worldsoilday. You may have noticed that we are pretty sappy for #soil. Our farm builds soil through crop rotation, plant diversity, limiting tillage, and planting cover crops—like this field of #buckwheat. If you haven’t already, we hope that everyone takes a moment today to consider this life-giving being beneath our feet. There’s a whole world down there and it needs our help. And we need it. How do you promote soil health? #thesoilwillsaveus #soilhealth #soilfoodweb #carbonfarming #covercrop #farmerscoveriowa

HAPPY World Soil Day 2018. The International Union of Soil Scientists (Guessing their Xmas parties are very dirty) in 2002 designated December 5, “World Soil Day”. Raising awareness of the Soil, “as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human well being”. I am constantly thinking about my impacts on the soil I Farm. Cover Crops are an important ingredient to achieving healthy soil. Pictured; Winter Rye(bottom center), and Buckwheat (bottom left, upper/bottom right). Cover crops, as seen in these pictures, attract beneficial insects/bugs and farmers. What’s the soil like on your property, flower beds, garden beds like? If you are starting with soil brands that mentions “miracles” leading to growth, consider a different approach. #worldsoilday2018 #worldsoilday #covercrop #soilhealth #soil #localfood #buckwheatcovercrop #winterrye #soilmatters #soilhealthmatters #welcerfarms #farmsohard

Happy #worldsoilday Here's a picture from our fields, where we've planted a cover crop of Rye mixed with Phacelia, which has these beautiful flowers. They prevent water run-off and fix nitrogen in to the soil, and we’ll plough this in to the fields in January before we plant next year’s crop, including many of our flowers for drying. 🌿🌞
