"SpringTails" Watered some plants and the local Cheer team showed up to jump around and share their support. Springtails are tiny wingless hexopods (non-insects). Primarily detritivores, Springtails have entognathous (internal) mouthparts which they use to feed on dead roots, mold, fungi and algae. They're currently chowing down on the previous mom's roots from the chop and drop while battling with the ferocious Stratiolaelaps scimitus (beneficial soil mites). #livingsoil #organics #soilbiota #healthyrhizosphere #soilfoodweb #chopanddrop #detritivore #springtails #knf #naturalfarming #notill #koreannaturalfarming

Borage is a much loved bee forage plant and we like the edible flowers in our summer salads. It’s a prolific self sower but it’s very easy to remove if desired. I pull it and drop it as mulch to feed and protect the soil everywhere in the garden. In essence, allowing it to reseed at will means I’m passively growing garden mulch in situ with no need for hauling/heavy work! Plant borage as companion plants to tomatoes, strawberries and cabbage and take note: our strawberries were noticeably larger next to the borage 🍓 Big bonus? The deer don’t touch it . . . . #borage #companionplanting #chopanddrop #mulch #strawberries #worksmarternotharder #soilconditioner #compost #beeforage #permaculturegarden #organicgardening #ecologicalgarden #permaculture #edibleflowers #summersalad #deerproof

My borage is showing off 🌸 🐝 When I first started growing it, I wasn’t told that once you plant borage, you have borage everywhere for your entire life. I used the first one for chop and drop, which worked out really great in my squash bed but then I started seeing volunteers all over my tomato bed so I admitted defeat and replanted some in a grow bag...where they’re dropping flowers everywhere so that I can pull them up all over my yard for next year 🙃 The bees love them and their flowers make my ice cubes look pretty so I guess I don’t hate it 🤷🏼‍♀️ #borage #pollinatorgarden #beefriendly

"They tried to bury us but didn't know we were seeds." I planted comfrey rootings about a month and a half ago and never saw anything come up until just this week. This leaf just exploded out of the ground. It wasn't until I used a plant identifying app (plant net) that I saw this was precious comfrey! I thought it was another weed! I'm so excited to continue to develop my permaculture garden with the help of these (3) plants! I'll use it to make comfrey tea and the chop and drop green mulch. Finished tidying up the garden and finally attached my insect hotel to the wall! I was just about finished when an enormous thunderstorm rolled in and I had to go inside. I quickly checked my rain barrel when the weather turned and I think there's about 50 liters left!! 150 liters of rain water collected!!! I'm thrilled and absolutely happy: no more drinking water for my garden!! #insecthotel #patio #chopanddrop #nodiggarden #backyard #backyardgarden #veggiegarden #pottedplants #plantsinpots #moestuin #moestuinieren #bostuin #shadegarden #urbangarden #urbangardener #gardensofinstagram #instagarden #instagardener

Contrast: 1st video after and 2nd before...carving forests from bush, reduces fire risk by bringing down dead and overgrowth for the new layer for topsoil. It’s moisture holding, microorganism harboring, canopy creating, and provides new understory... We are rewriting the story. We know that by taking care of the trees already standing, we will bring more moisture from the air into the soil. People get caught up in planting things. What if we also took as much time and focus taking care of what’s here to thrive? How much food is already in the landscape? How do you use what you already have? . . . #silvaculture #chopanddrop #permaculture #landregeneration #re3generation @treepeople_org @polyfacefarm @wildwillowfarm @kisstheground @livingearthsystems #fireprevention #socalfires #calfire #stackingfunctions @stackingfunctions #tendingthewild #jamulfireprevention #jamul #sdfire

There is an old, old saying that goes something like this; “The best time to plant comfrey is 2-5 years ago. The second best time to plant comfrey is today”. We are pretty sure Confucius said that. Comfrey is a pretty incredible plant that collects valuable nutrients and minerals from below most plants reach and pulls them up into their leaves where those resources can be made available to other plants. Comfrey can be used to make a type of liquid fertilizer called comfrey tea. It can be composted or you can simply “chop and drop” the leaves where you want them and they will break down and feed your plants and soil. We dug up some of our plants that we brought from the old house and divided them into 12 new plants that will be used to chop and drop in our orchard. #comfrey #permaculture #chopanddrop #homestead #homesteading #soil #regenerativeagriculture #orchard #pepperlaneridge

Carve me a forest! These are trees, but look like bushes. I once asked my Sunday School teacher why the bushes don’t with us anymore. I got sent to the principal Marti’s office for being heretical. Marti seemed to love me anyway. And I learned that I don’t need burning bushes to speak with god. Fuck it, I’m gonna chop these down so they turn into trees and don’t burn! . . . Bird bath was dirty and needed to be cleaned. It was on my list. When I noticed it had been scraped/ half cleaned a few days later, I thanked Enrique for taking care of it. When he said he didn't clean it, he thought that I did, we were both... 🤔🤔 . Upon closer inspection we saw a bunch of tiny cleaner worms and were SO EXCITED that #wildmagic was happening on its own!! 😍😍 . Has anyone heard of this before? When the Comfrey goes flop, it’s time to chop and drop! . I could write volumes about Comfrey’s medicinal uses, but it’s all been said before. Search for it online: you’ll find it’s a controversial plant. What’s not subject of disagreement is its unparalleled ability to heal traumatic injuries. Comfrey is a bonesetters herb. I am not a bonesetter, but in the past twenty years I have used it three times to heal dislocated or broken toes with miraculous results each time. . I notice in my clinical practice how difficult it is to get people to poultice. I’m worried that poulticing is becoming extinct in our home kitchens, and that’s a shame says I. Comfrey is a poulticer’s herb. Its rough leaves mush up nice in a minute or two with a bit of boiling water in a mortar and pestle. Comfrey heals wounds so quickly it’s not recommended for dirty wounds or puncture wounds, lest Comfrey heals right over the debris or heals the surface before the depths. . See, I intended to talk about Comfrey in the garden, but still ended up talking about its use for the injured, that’s how powerful this plant is. . Comfrey is a plant to have in your backyard, to welcome into your family. It produces an abundance of elegant purpley bluebell flowers that bees and fairies frequent. Here in Baltimore I can easily get two harvests a season: I cut the plant back dramatically when the flowering stalks start to fade and droop, around this time of year, and then immediately the plant regenerates, no offense taken to the pruning, and a month or two later there’s a fresh harvest of leaves for medicine or more compost. . Some people grow a Comfrey plant by each and every garden bed, something I aspire to and am currently working on. When we chop the drooping flower stalks, we can drop the stalks whole in our gardens to compost in place. Comfrey is full of Earth nutrition - and our gardens (our communities) are only as good as our soil. I drop Comfrey stalks around my garden beds, piled up around trees and bushes, and added to the compost pile when I have enough (there’s rarely enough) *continued in comments*

Today was a busy day on the farm! Planted more #crimsonclover as a nitrogen fixer. Held off planting the #buckwheat till around June-July though. It's great when doing a #chopanddrop towards #flowering due to its #phosphorus content. Planted some flats of #sunflowers , #marigolds , #borage , #californiapoppy , #coriander , #dill , #fennel , #watermelon and #pumpkin ! Most of these are for the #IPM program which attract #pollinators , #ladybugs , #lacewings and #piratebugs. The watermelons and pumpkin are for me and any other #wildlife that wants a snack. Afterwards, I made about 5 gallons of #fishferment using two whole #salmon , #sugar , water and the #LacticAcidBacteriaSerum I made a couple days ago. It's going to be a stinky month, but after it's finished it should equal anywhere from 600 - 5000 gallons of food depending on how I decide to use it. Although one recipe recommends 2tbsp/gallon fed directly to the soil, I've learned to be overly cautious with ferments. I'll probably just start with the standard 1/2 a teaspoon per gallon and go from there. #probioticfarming #hemp #cannabis #hempfarm #beyondorganic #knf

A fine specimen of ‘Bocking 14’ comfrey- standing about 4ft (1.2m) high and wide. This is a sterile variety that won’t self seed everywhere. It is propagated by root cuttings. As well as being a useful plant to cut back and use to make plant feed, It is just as useful to leave to flower as it is a real hit with the bees! . . . #bocking14 #comfrey #beefood #perennials #beefriendly #plantsforbees #beneficialinsects #beegarden #gardening #permaculture #herbs #herbgarden #symphytum #quercusedibles

A little chop and drop of Murraya koenigii a.k.a. curry plant , sweet neem . This tree blocked almost 90% of the sunlight so had to chop it up a bit . The leaves and bark don't go to waste . I spent the morning chopping-and-dropping cover crops and I just need to finish spreading gypsum and mulching the beds so I can plant the tomatoes and chiles next week. I had to come in because there’s weather coming in and the thunder was getting close. A neighbor down the road passed away a couple of years ago. Last summer, I salvaged some white onions that were in the abandoned flower beds at the house. I let them go to seed so I can plant them next year. The onion starts I planted last fall are about ready for harvest...we’ll have to see how the garlic turns out.

⠀ Coconut palm. Can't wait until it grows! (and it's dozen or so buddies)⠀ ⠀ What's missing from this photo is the mulch. We practice 'chop & drop', a method that provides natural fertilizer to the plant & it's much easier than other methods. Undesirable plants or things that need pruning, just "chop and drop" the leaves around the plants. This not only provides nutrients for the soil, it maintains moisture, and protects the soil from either baking in the sun or being washed away by the rains. Cool, huh? Chévere, ¿no? ⠀ ⠀ .⠀ ~~~⠀ .⠀ ⠀ #bosquecomestible #foodforest #forestgarden #polyculture #regenerativeagriculture #coconut #coco #palmtree #palmera #coconutpalm #buildsoil #chopanddrop #community #comunidad #ecoaldea #ecovillage #ediblelandscaping #intentionalcommunity #leavetheleaves #mothernature #naturaleza #ökodorf #permaculturelife #soil #eco #Öko #permacultura #permaculture #Permakultur ⠀ ⠀

#comfrey is considered a #dynamicaccumulator with roots that can penetrate subsoils to great depths (up to 100’ in some conditions) to bring nutrients up to the surface. Using the sophisticated #chopanddrop #mulch method, I cut them back when they get too big or are impeding their neighbors.

Cover Crops are a permaculturists best friend! Cover crops are the best way to start building soil.. let them grow all the way out then chop and drop them in the place they came from leaving the roots full of nitrogen and the green material as a mulch layer to break down. This is a mix of Buckwheat, Sunflower, Cowpeas, Mung bean, Spring vetch, sorghum grass, sunn hemp, and Indian mustard. #covercrop #chopanddrop #growyourownmulch #buildsoil #livingsoil #livingfood #beyondorganic #closedloop #Harthealthyfarm

In nature, complementary species grow together and strengthen each other. We can imitate this natural synergy by planting plant guilds or polycultures. . #Repost @kununurra_community_garden • • • • • • In Permaculture, a guild is a grouping a plants, trees, animals, insects, and other components that work together to help ensure their health and productivity. Instead of planting gardens or orchards or fields or forests, Permaculture teaches us how to “build guilds”. This is a great thing to learn and fun to teach kids on a small scale. We can educate young people about living with 'community' by understanding guilds and that all plants or people have a part in the whole. 🌿🍓 #plantguilds #permaculture #communitygarden #chopanddrop #livingmulch #growingfruit #growingfood #growyourown #polyculture #everythingisconnected #obtainayield #fruittree #observeandinteract #nature #foodforest #plantatree
