New garden plot! (well new to us.) We have inoculated the whole plot with IMO (Indigenous Micro Organism) that we made right here on the property and then layered mulch over it. We plan on planting a blend of nitrogen fixing and dynamic accumulating cover crop for the winter and then chopping and dropping it into tiny pieces throughout the season onto the soil. After all the soil prepping, we plan on growing a crop of three sisters (corn, pole beans, and squash). This is only one of the spots where we grow food. Soon I will share where the rest of of our fruits and veggies will grow!

I did a lot of chopping and dropping yesterday. I’ve been waiting for the Asian greens and rocket seed heads to dry and drop naturally but I caved in to the scrappy nature of their waterlogged seed heads and chopped them off. I just threw them like that onto the garden bed instead. I also chopped a lot of old spinach leaves and icky looking veggies that had done their time. They have been thrown right back into the beds. I’m going to make a lavender hydrosol today from the cuttings I took yesterday. I recently bought a still and I’m so in love with the beautiful floral liquids I’m making, they’re heavenly! 💗🌿 . . . . . . #brisbanegardener #brisbanegarden #gardenlove #gardening #herbgardening #herbgarden #potager #kitchengarden #edibleplants #ediblegarden #organic #organicgardening #eatwhatyougrow #growyourownproduce #growyourownfood #growyourown #vegetablegarden #veggiegarden #vegetablegardening #myplot #greenliving #permaculture #chopanddrop #sustainableliving #sustainability #gardenart

Perma culture gardening here. I had a portion of ground here that was bare but fertile and chopped @and dropped the heads of the dill flowers after they went to seed. No burying just dry sewed them on the dirt during the lunar moon cycle recommendation for planting dill. With all this rain I have sprouts! Chop and drop and skip removing your plants when the season ends. #protectthetopsoil #permaculture #chopanddrop #onestrawnation

Pigeon Pea. While back 'Seed Saver A' gave me some Pidgeon Pea seedlings that had self-sow in her patch. I was assured that they were a top notch plant for chop and drop tiny farmers such as myself so- me being me- I invited myself around to her garden to get some more. I have been more ambitious in terms of size- these guys are knee high- but given we have north European summer conditions ATM I figured it was a good time to take the risk. A nice serve of bamboo mulch and some seasol and we should be away.... #permaculture #chopanddrop #pidgeonpea #seedsavers #organic #regenerative #syntropicfarming

Day 10 of #Inktober - Prompt: flowing // Trifolium pratense . . Red clover is a legume, which means it helps fix nitrogen to the soil. Planting legumes as cover crops helps restore nitrogen to the soil after “heavy feeders” like tomatoes or peppers have been grown there. It can also be used as a green chop-and-drop mulch. Herbalists say that red clover is a blood thinner (the blossoms especially), but I did not find much research (in my cursory googling) to support that. The blossoms are slightly sweet and make a nice grassy tea. . . . . . . #PlantsToKnow #RedClover #TrifoliumPratense #legumes #ChopAndDrop #permaculture #greenmulch #herbaltea #clover #weeds #covercrop #Inktober2018

Fallen fruit from a freshly pruned carambola tree flanking a small cacao field. To some it may seem like utter waste of a deliciously sweet variety of this fruit - even when ‘green’. Perhaps. But what did not make it into the bellies of humans, will return to the belly of the earth and live on to nourish its mother tree, its Theo neighbours and every other organism that allows it to transition from fresh fruit to bare bones minerals and elements ....and start the building of delicious fruit all over again😍 #TheoSupporters #theocompanions #teamwork #transitionwell #energyexchanges #carambolas #chopanddrop #recycleme

Probably wondering, what happened? This is Chop and Drop! What do I mean? When trimming or at the end of a season for plants I remove them and drop them on the garden paths or in my garden. Why? This creates how it is done in nature. When the leaves, branches, twigs fall to the ground, this breaks down into the vital organic soil. As it is decomposing it's providing food for insects and worms love it too! This amazingly very rich soil is deep rich color and nutrients vital for gardens. Think of all the things people throw away! Keep this for your flowers and trees and your garden veggies! #vegan #organic #simplicitygardenbyrobbin #wonderly_fresh_ideas #chopanddrop #chopanddropmulch

#wheelbug Wheelbugs mating actually. I saw these two at the pink bungalow backyard forest last week. Come to find out they are pretty highly valued in an organic garden and kill pests like Japanese beetles. They also pack a pretty bad sting/bite but only if provoked. I did not provoke lol. Chickens are very interested in the new #lasagnagarden. We started with a layer of cardboard and shredded paper, branches and then green leaves, grass clippings, rabbit manure, straw, worm leachate, banana peels and some finished compost from the large mulch delivery this winter from the tree trimming crew. Building it just like a veggie lasagna with lots of carbon heavy materials alternated with nitrogen sources. Chopped and dropped a ton of green nitrogen from the garden. Hoping this bed will heat up and start composting so I can start winter greens as soon as it cools down. #makeyourownsoil #compostinplace #chopanddrop #blackgold #returnthesurplus #reapwhatyousow #growyourown #permaculture #farmyouryard

As a tea lover🌿☕, I prepared a special infusion as an offering to the mighty soil micro-organisms🐾. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Soil likes to be fed well, and showered💧 with medicinal healing tea once in a while... Like compost comfrey tea. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The soil is such an intrticate living ecosysten that supports plant life and many other living organisms. They also foster a home and environment for seedlings, so they can burst freely into the dark and vast grounds 🌙 and journey themselves to the light🌈. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀Beware, compost tea will get a bit stinky since its breaking down plant material and composting for about 2-4 weeks. ~~

Canna edulis, Queensland Arrowroot, Edible Canna, Achira, Achera, Dong Rieng, Ganyong, Sakhu Chin, Zembu, Maraca. A hardy, clump-forming and heavily producing perennial up to 2m tall, shooting from a large red-skinned, round rhizome (tuber) often larger than a clasped fist. Lush bright green leaves, 30-90cm long which unfurl on thick stalks. Red flowers, with some varieties orange/yellow. Similar in its appearance to its close relative, the ornamental Cannas. These nasturtiums are going wild! Throughout the summer I've been chop and dropping them to use as mulch around the garden annuals. I do wonder if they'll negatively affect the apple tree, either by putting too much stress on the branches (though I imagine apples weight quite a bit more) or by decreasing airflow which could increase the likelihood of one of the many diseases that apple trees can get. I will probably pull the nasturtiums off of the tree before the end of summer, which will also give the carrots, beets, kale and parsnips planted underneath enough space to fill out. #nasturium #chopanddrop #eatyouryard #growfood #lazygardener #pnwpermaculture #savorylandscaping #permaculture #ediblelandscaping

This gal loves the cherry tomatoes and black raspberries from the garden. So much. Unfortunately, I’ve been neglecting our home garden much of the summer. It’s been busy getting the 2nd rental up and running. I didn’t plant as much and then haven’t cared for it enough, but there are still some cherry tomatoes growing and a second crop of raspberries has arrived. And omg that is the biggest comfrey leaf I think I’ve seen. I had a volunteer cucumber plant, so I let it grow, but no cucumbers, just creepin around back there with the milkweed vine, taking things over. . . . . . #midwestartist #nebraska #skyfordays #overcastday #giftsofnature #backyardbliss #backyardbirds #busysummer #blackraspberry #wanderlust #summerishere #gratefultobealive #houselove #midcentury #foundforaged #instaartist #flashesofdelight #ihearbirds #yarden #raspberry #cherrytomato #chopanddrop #comfrey #wickingraisedbed #perennial #messygarden #volunteerplants #gardenneglect #weimaraner #weimlove

#buckwheat is one of my favorite #covercrops since it grows in just 6 weeks. You know it’s time to chop and drop when it’s in full bloom. I’m going to give it another week, but it’s looking pretty ready. I’ll leave the plant residues on the #soil surface, also them to dry in the sun, and then cover the surface with #hay before plugging in my #broccoli or #cabbage starts. The next plots with buckwheat will provide a winter home to #leeks and #onions. There are more starts on the way, but I’m trying something totally new. I’ll keep you posted if it works out. #fingerscrossed #chopanddrop #soilhealth #soilbuilding #organicgardening #organic #gardening #fallgarden

🌿 Amorpha fruticosa: Proving to be one of my favorite #permaculture plants and a beautiful addition to the landscape. Before I planted this on our land I’d never seen it in the wild, but this year a few times riverside it popped out! One time it was growing straight on a rock... and thriving! This luscious perennial shrub, Wild False Indigo, makes great pollinator habitat and acts as a nitrogen-fixing perennial perfect for “chop and drop” (cutting a plant’s foliage multiple times a year to use as mulch.) In its second year, it’s one of the most beautiful plants ⭐️hands down⭐️on the homestead. Through drought it has stayed as green as ever and even sends out new growth! I liken it to comfrey in this way. Thankful to ally with this wonderful native perennial! We bought them through our local forest nursery, Georgia O White, for incredibly cheap prices.

Sops need not apply to gardening in Sydney this summer. Just heard today we can expect no significant rain till February 2019 after a 2018 of just 228ml in the macarthur area so far. I have made the choice to save my trees by sacrificing fruit yield, for tree health with a hard prune today. The unglamourous side to this, is mess, and me being a sop (continuously apologising to the trees 😪) as I lop another branch off. The glamourous side is free tomato stakes and satisfaction that I’ll be able to give the trees the water, food and air they need, if they are this smaller size, during nasty summer number 2 (after a very dry winter). Bring it on!! #startwithwhy #orchardcare #imnotcryingitsjustwater #notears #saveyourtrees #dontworry #sacrificeforlove #handsandhustle #lovemygarden #droughtpreparation #wtfisgoingon #dontgiveup #vintagetrish #permaculturegarden #beyondorganic #nochemicals #chopanddrop #naturalgardening #permaculturehomegarden #urbanpermaculture
