I spent the morning taking measurements and checking the moisture content of the spalted pecan and oak slabs I somewhat recently acquired. Both species are down to about 15% in the center, 11% just below the surface. One issue is that the shop has been quite humid lately, so the drying process is slowed down a bit. I could probably technically use them now and have little to no issues due to their thickness, but I’ll give them a while longer.
The afternoon: started with final sanding on the walnut chips box — put one coat of poly on yesterday that was meant to be the last, but it had a couple runs, so going for one more, which I will apply tonight. I then milled up some wenge for a 10 x 20 x 4 custom hinged lidded box, and some cherry for a 14 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 5 3/8 custom lidless box. The cherry will have a book matched bottom panel. Wenge will have grain and color matched lid and bottom panel.
Will finish milling tomorrow, and get as far into the builds as time allows. Will also try to start on the final walnut hexagon serving tray — that will start off with the making of custom walnut plywood using a 1/4” Baltic birch ply core with 1/8” of walnut on each side.
Hoping that a custom I’m in communication about will come through— it would be my largest project to date and would be a great boost to my shop.
