I made my first batch of Fire Cider! I’ve been hearing about it’s magic ability to fight off sickness for years and with two little kids in the home, I need all the help I can get with that. . Pretty much all bloggers and IGers on the internet will tell you this elixir is spicy deliciousness... they are lying. 😂 It tastes like you have pulled your barstool right up to your local volcano and asked for a shot of lava. Seriously. 🔥🔥🔥 . It’s not spicy like hot peppers, my hubby describes it as “wasabi juice with an aftertaste of vinegar” (makes sense given the ingredients). The recipe most people seem to use is by Rosemary Gladstar (as seen in pic), but Fire Cider has been around much longer than her recipe. . After six weeks of it steeping my husband and I took undiluted shots of it to try it out. I do NOT recommend this, hahaha. We felt it burning its way down to our tummies for about 20 minutes after that. Kinda as if Satan was doing a luge event down our intestinal track. 🤣 Next time I think I’ll add it to tomato juice for a spicy V8 type beverage. Yes, there will be a next time because anything is better than being sick and a stay at home Mom to two littles, and I’m a firm believer that plants and food are the best medicine. . . . . . . . . #firecider #apothecary #foodmedicine #guthealthmatters #organicmedicine #vegetarianeats #herbalism #rosemarygladstar #herbalremedies #urbanhomestead #homesteadlife #plantmedicine #homemademedicine #plantwitch #homegrownmedicine #permaculture #holistichealing #thehappygardeninglife #beyondorganic #naturalhealthandwellness #growyourownfood #californiagarden #foodnotlawns #growyourownfood #herbgarden #sustainableliving #plantlady #urbanhomesteading #organicallygrowing

I started my first worm bin, ever, 5 days ago. I checked on it this morning and they’ve eaten through most of, it not all, the berries and grapes. The only thing really left are the coffee filters and banana peels. I turned the contents over and found lots of activity with black gold. I will be adding more fruit scraps tonight. I’m amazed that they broke down so much that quickly. I must also say that there isn’t much of a foul smell to the whole thing. It smells like earth.

As I’ve said before, I’ve never grown #microgreens. I made the rookie mistake of too much water. I don’t know how well you can see it but the mat has staining on it. There is a scent of mold to it. That’s that bad news. I’m going to toss it and start over with much less water. The good news (second picture) shows the roots emerging from the papery shell. It’s only been 2 days. Orach seems to be fine. It looks like it will work but I just need to use less water. @vegbed has been amazing with the feedback and has suggested the same thing. This is user error and the mats seem to be working out.

: One plant that is GUARANTEED to attract bees AND bumblebees is borage. Why did I emphasize on “and” because bees and bumble bees might not necessarily forage on the same plant depending on the length of bumblebee’s tongue. The length of a bumble bee's tongue is indicative of the types of flowers they forage on for nectar and pollen. Borage is one plant that BOTH specie LOVE. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #mygarden #mygardentoday #mygardenflowers #mygardens #mygardenlife #mygardendiary #garden #gardening #gardendesign #gardeningtips #gardenlife #garden_styles #gardeninspiration #gardenideas #gardenphotography #gardens #gardeninglife #gardeninspo #gardendecor #gardensofinstagram #instagarden #instagardening #gardeningtips #gardeningideas #gardeninglife #gardeningisfun #homegarden #gardeningtime #flowergarden #myflowers #californiagarden #californialife

Okay, I found some Fall color in my garden 🙆‍♀️. The pomegranate in the background is putting on a show. This is the view from my random collection of potted plants that I haven't transplanted yet---quite possibly because I'm out of room. We all have that secret stash right? 😜 . . Foreground 📷: verbascum. A beautiful cottage flower that will re-seed all around.

The term “horticultural therapy” gets thrown around a lot on IG but did you know it’s actually a legit therapeutic modality being practiced internationally with loads of research backing it up? It’s true! It’s more than just interacting with plants, which has therapeutic value too, but HT has specific therapeutic goals. And this past week I started the long journey to becoming a professional horticultural therapist (HTR)! I’m beyond excited to have finally found my path! . Some of my fav stories and research about HT: . One of the seminal research studies was in the 70’s by R. Ulrich who found that surgical patients that had a window w/ a view of greenery recovered faster and had less post-op complications. He did this research by looking at hospital records, nothing subjective like asking patients how they felt. Just looking at plants promoted faster healing! . The recidivism rate among offenders who had gone through an HT program was 10% compared to 70% in gen pop. (who had access to other therapies). . One patient who had plateaued in their physical rehab had such success in the garden that their occupational and physical therapists actually didn’t believe the HTR’s report. They thought it was impossible for the patient to be doing the things reported, so they set up a video recorder and...they were blown away. Patients have less barriers up and more motivation in a garden. It’s ENJOYABLE. . An inmate, a big, tough guy, was given a flower and broke down weeping. When it came to dissect it to learn plant parts he couldn’t do it. It was too precious a gift 💓 . A nonverbal child became verbal after 4 sessions in the garden. . An Alzheimer’s patient was transported back to loving memories with her father. . Juvenile offenders grew a sense of empathy for others by growing food and donating it to food banks. Their entire role in society changed: they were contributors, with skills to offer! . So many people talked about how gardening with an HTR gave them a sense of normalcy that they had never/rarely felt. This is HUGE for many populations— the severely mentally ill, disabled, children with intense trauma... . There’s so much more! TBC 💓🌱💓

Poinsettias were named after an American ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, who loved the flowers so much he brought them to the US where it became the XMAS flower. In ancient Mexico it was called Cuetlaxochitl (Leather Flower) and was used for red dye and to reduce fever....year round. 🌺🌺🎄🌺🌺🎄

Thinning is done on all pellets except for the top tray. That is the stellar Mix from @farmersash at @farmstand59. The main empty spaces is where the peas had been. Those were all transplanted out. I’m thinking of filling up the empty spaces with the 2 inch pots I got from @bootstrapfarmer. I’m not sure what I would plant but I’m sure I’ll find something. Im thinking more #kohlrabi or some #orach. Got any suggestions? Drop it in the comments below.

#microgreens here I come! I’ve never really tried to grow microgreens specifically. I’ve eaten them before because I had to thin seedlings and they were delicious. Let’s see how this orach does. I bought the #orach mix from @bakercreekseeds last year and grew them out. I saved tons of seeds. I started up a full tray of them this year to transplant but they never got thinned and ended up dying from lack or water. We shall see how this goes. In case you’re wondering, I’m using @vegbed bamboo mats. I’ve seen the results from @learntogrow and she’s got some gorgeous greens. The mats come in a 10 pack for around $20.

: One thing about Japanese Maples (especially the young one) you need to know is that they love moist soil. By saying that I don’t mean they like sitting in water, but they flourish in moist and well drained soil. So don’t hesitate to give them extra water especially during hot weather. ❤️ We transplanted this little Japanese Maple from the pot to the ground on March 2018. It LOVES it there.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dec 8 2018 - Sheet mulching the sunken bed. Our gardening and ecology knowhow is pretty low. My grandparents were farmers before they moved to North America and kept a garden at their home in Canada, so my dad has some knowledge from osmosis, but generally we are learning as we go. This whole thing is a big experiment to see if we can turn our yard into a healthy, sustainable environment. Today I finished sheet mulching the sunken beds using Toby Hemenway’s guide. The soil was already soaked from rain so I went ahead and opened it up a bit with a spading fork and then sprinkled a dusting of bone meal and blood meal for phosphorus and nitrogen. Then I placed cardboard sheets down for the light blocking layer to smother any seeds in the ground. Next came another dusting of blood meal, then about 5 or so inches of straw sprinkled with a bit of blood meal to keep the carbon/nitrogen ratio right (hopefully). Then about a 1 inch layer of compost we bought from the city (hopefully it was enough), and lastly another inch of straw for that top mulch layer.

A random assortment—do you have a favorite? Better yet, is there a succulent that you don’t care for at all? I’m not a sempervivum fan but I made an exception for the Gold Nuggets (pictured left middle). 🍂And see the Mardi Gras near the top? That’s growing on the same stem as the non-variegated aeonium next to it. 🍁Hope you have a wonderful Saturday! . . . #succulentsofinstagram #rsblooms #thesucculenthobbyist #succulentgarden #succulentlove #succulentobsession #californiagarden #succulentaddict #succulentarrangement #pottedsucculents #succulentlandscape #succulentlover #suculentas #succulentes #sukkulenten #suculentasycactus #succulentobsessed #succulentsonly #realsimple #sunsetmag #plantstagram #instasucculent #succulentsunday #succulentlife #succulenthoarder #instagarden #waterwise
