There be several pirate havens in the Caribbean, but none were as divisive as Nassau n' the Pirate Republic in the Bahamas! Their presence was strong enough that Pirates such as Blackbeard, Charles Vane n' Calico Jack were able to create thar own "Republic." Following a massive battle in the Spanish War of Succession, the island was left lightly populated. When the war ended n' English Privateers found themselves without employ, they saw an opportunity in Nassau to create a pirate stronghold to raid from with impunity.
Many famous pirates were from Nassau, most of them learned from two ole salts who were rivals: Benjamin Hornigold and Henry Jennings. It was said that Hornigold mentored Blackbeard, Sam Bellamy n' Stede Bonnet. Jennings allegedly taught Charles Vane, Calico Jack, Anne Bonnie n' Mary Read. Collectively the group became known as the Flying Gang. They all became notorious figures in #PirateHistory.
The Pirate Republic had its own form government n' policy. #Blackbeard himself was voted in as the Republic's "Magistrate" to enforce law and order. What this constituted on the island was unclear. However, Nassau served its purpose of bein' a haven for wildly successful #Buccaneers. The English government had to get involved to stop the Pirates of the Republic!
England sent Woodes Rogers to govern the island along with a fleet of warships to offer pirates a choice, give up their life of crime or face death. It took years of work but eventually the English subdued the pirates, n' #Nassau became a functioning English colony. #piratefashions #caribbean
