Mindfulness Challange Day 1: "Practice deep breathing for 3 minutes" To deep breath: move / take your breath from the chest down to the stomache - inhale on a count to 3 - exhale on a count to 5. I’ve been doing a lot of practice with the heart in the last six months and it’s made a big difference to my ability to relax, to (finally) let things go, gain perspective and change my view about many things, including myself. It’s based in a metta meditation and it helps me to experience calm, kindness toward myself and helps to reframe difficult thoughts and feelings. Holidays can be a difficult time of year and so this meditation is a present that you can give to yourself: a way of being kind to yourself, wishing yourself well, and I’ll also give a couple of simple and super effective exercises to take with you so you can head toward the new year feeling calmer and positive. We’ll be including a visualisation but if you’re not a visual type, that’s absolutely fine-if you be present, if youcan feel what’s going on in your body, in fact even if you can sit and listen for thirty minutes or so, you can do this! I love backbends and front opening poses. It reverses the forward bending position we are constantly in.. like sitting in front of a computer, looking at our smartphones, driving, cooking, washing dishes, tying shoelace, kissing, making love 😁 • Seriously.. there are very very few things in our daily lives where we are in this kind of position. • And yoga is about balance. It’s a vegan eatery, offers GF options on almost everything and the staff and owner are all so welcoming. Today is International Human Rights Day. Birth rights are human rights. As the UK human rights in childbirth organisation Birthrights say in their leaflet on human rights in maternity care: "Human rights require public bodies to treat you with dignity and respect, consult you about decisions and respect your choices. Human rights law gives pregnant women the right to receive maternity care, to make their own choices about their care and to be given standards of care that respect their dignity." They go on to say "Failure to provide adequate maternity care, lack of respect for women’s dignity, invasions of privacy, procedures carried out without consent, failure to provide adequate pain relief without medical contraindication, giving pain relief where it is not requested, unnecessary or unexplained medical interventions, and lack of respect for women’s choices about where and how a birth takes place, may all violate human rights and can lead to women feeling degraded and dehumanised." Birthrights, together with the British Institute of Human Rights, have a really useful booklet for midwives which goes through a number of examples. There are other examples on their website. Birthrights have a helpline so if you are wondering about your rights or what you should do as a midwife, then give them a call. Find out more about Birthrights, read about their campaigns, download their leaflets. They also need volunteers and trainers. Rebecca Schiller, one of the founders of Birthrights, has a very useful book: Why human rights in childbirth matter. Birth rights are not just for the UK, but worldwide. We are quite lucky relative to other places that do not have the freedom to birth that we do. Here are some useful links of other birth rights organisations. BREATHING FOR ANXIETY 🌬 So I made this video a little while ago, but I wanted to share it again because I am SUPER passionate about finding techniques and ways to manage & reduce the amount of anxiety so many of us feel on a daily basis. 🌬 I myself have experienced anxiety, and it can be truly crippling & debilitating to your day to day life. When everything comes to a head and you experience a full anxiety attack you can feel so out of control and helpless to what your body is doing. 🌬 Most people I know have experienced anxiety at some point in their life, even from young ages such as 6 years old. 🌬 I am happy to say that I very rarely experience anxiety anymore and I do attribute this to the breathing techniques in my video, meditation, yoga & other forms of exercise. Getting the blood moving in the body and taking yourself out of the sympathetic nervous system is so important. 🌬 It is part of my mission to facilitate the space needed for people to work with what they are feeling and find some reprieve.
