Watching grain grow:
We have a lot of field trials going on this year. 4 proven varieties, 2 fields under contract with new ones, & 3 small experimental plots for unproven ones. Plus we are hosting WSU's Horse Heaven spring wheat variety trials & a weed control trial. I always say yes to hosting trials - controlled experiments carried out by experts on my own farm!
I put our own trials right next to my house, so I can see them every day. As usual, I've learned much from them. Also as usual, it's not all success. I don't know yields or quality yet, but they're mature enough to teach us a lot, so come take a walk with me and look at them:
1) Triticale looks phenomenal. Tall, super competitive & low maintenance. No seed treat, put it on some hard, poor ground & it's thrived. Everything I hate about feral rye, but now working for me instead of against me. Yes.
2) L - Sequoia Hard Red Winter (HRW) R - Keldin HRW. Keldin has been the variety to beat. I think Sequoia is going to beat it. It's my best looking wheat this year. Tall & uniform & matures later than Keldin, but not so late that the heat gets it.
3) L - Yecora Rojo R - Hollis. Aaaah, Hollis, you love Horse Heaven & Horse Heaven loves you... and no other Hard Red Spring (HRS) wheat it seems. Yecora has nice heads and form, probably decent yield... but it's just too short. It's going to be hard to get it in the combine. Hollis you get foot rot sometimes & lean & drive me crazy... but I always come back to you ❤
4) L - 9662 HRS, R - White Sonoran. These look ok side by side, but only because they're both shorties. 9662 has no excuse, it's supposed to be the next Hollis. But unless it's packing a 5 bushel surprise to overcome royalties and no saved seed, game over.
5) White Sonoran. This one was the moonshot variety for us. It's an heirloom variety, and no dwarfing genes, so it should be 5 ft tall - it's not. But it should have been seeded at half the normal rate per acre, & it's definitely overpopulated. I'll do it again right. There's potential here.
