ONE CHAPTER AHEAD
I was talking to someone yesterday who told me that she approached a PT at one of our local gyms to enquire about his services.
Immediately he started DOWN PLAYING his role, and actually told her she should do classes instead 🤦♂️ He down played it that much, he didn’t even talk her through his services/prices. She said he came across nervous.
Let’s be real here.
99 times out of 100, somebody is going to get 10x the results working 1-2-1 with a coach than doing a generic fitness class. (Note: He wasn’t suggesting small group training, he was recommending the typical Les Mills style classes). I’m not slating classes btw. Just that, if someone wants to fast track results - PT is likely one of the best ways of getting there.
He did this as he’s new to the industry, doesn’t have huge amounts of experience and so couldn’t confidently sell his service.
He’s likely comparing himself to other PT’s he shares the gym floor with, that have more experience.
What he needs to remember is that his target demographic isn’t other PT’s.
His target demographic was the female that approached him: Someone new to training, and isn’t confident in using gym equipment. She wanted a simple plan to follow and some sessions to ensure she’s doing things correctly.
He’s MORE than qualified to do so.
The truth is, to help somebody, we only have to be a chapter or two ahead of where they are right now.
Has he gone through the feelings of intimidation when first walking into a gym and being overwhelmed? Yes.
Does he know enough to teach her what she was after? Yes.
Are his own experiences going to help her reach her goals faster than if she were to do it alone? Probably.
By not selling to her, he’s actually done her a dis-service. As she’s unlikely to reach out to somebody on the gym floor again.
If you’re new to the industry and reading this. Whether you’re working on the gym floor or in an online capacity - put yourself out there!
That post you’ve been tempted to write? But worried other trainers will judge it? They’re not your target client. So get it posted!
Ultimately, if you’re ‘one chapter ahead’ of them - you can help them 👊
