This humble bungalow sits along what was once the Main Street of the town of Whittier, North Carolina. Constructed by Ulrich Gibbs around 1920, the small, charming Craftsman-Style front gable bungalow sits along Whittier Depot Street, adjacent to the old site of the town’s commercial district on the Swain County side of the river. The house is one of two built by members of the Gibbs family in the center of town, as they were instrumental in the town’s early growth and development. Today, this is one of the most intact historic homes in town, and is surrounded by several other, older houses that date to the town’s heyday during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. One of my Favorite events to put together is our Valentine’s packages! The weather can always be iffy in WNC in February, but we always have some great couples that just get out there and do it! We added a couples paddling package this year and can’t wait to do that again! A big thanks to the couples that participated, the guides of @headwaters_outfitters that made it happen, and our community partners that put together the food! @magpiebrevard and @butter.and.blooms #adventures #headwatersoutfitters #blueridgemountains #flyfishing #canoeing #lakejocassee #laketoxaway #visitwaterfalls

This is the only intact remaining old retail building on the Swain County side of Whittier, North Carolina, and was built by the Moody family in the late 19th Century. The wood-frame house and store sits in what was once the middle of the town’s commercial district, directly across the street from the site of the town’s former Railroad depot. One of the few mixed-use structures in the town, the building served as both a house and a store for the Moody Family, and sat next to several wooden storefronts at the center of town. Following the decline of the town due to the Great Depression and the gradual displacement of the remaining businesses to the opposite side of the river in Jackson County along US Highway 19, the store was closed and the space renovated to become part of the residential portion of the house, which it remains today. Though the town has declined from its peak and is nothing like it once was, people still live in Whittier, and it still maintains some local institutions, including two churches, a post office, and a small community center. This Gothic Revival-Style stone building is home to the Whittier Missionary Baptist, and was constructed during the 1920s or 1930s to replace an earlier wood-frame church that stood at the center of the town’s business district on the Swain County side of the Tuckaseigee River. The church, one of the more notable buildings in town, had a cinderblock addition added to the rear in the mid-20th Century, and sits prominently at the end of the bridge that connects the two halves of the town. It’s Moola Monday! 🌾 I have soOo appreciated this community’s support with the start of our farm animal sanctuary. You have made a huge impact in just a few short months and it’s really inspiring us to dream big.✨ Today’s Moola Monday focus is to raise funds for Poppy’s outdoor enclosure.🏠She’s still too small to join the herd so she needs her own safe space. A portion of this enclosure will have a “house”, which is found on our amazon wish list (link in profile) that she can start with, which I can later use for small animal quarantine. I plan on rescuing her a friend, since she’s very lonely after Dandy died.🐐Any leftover funds will go towards that + a vet visit.🧡 PayPal is shophomegrown at gmail.com and Venmo is WildheartNC 🧡 Love + gratitude, @b.wild 👩🏼‍🌾

#MeditationMonday Meditation does not have to look a certain way. Meditation is a way to training the mind. . . Try this 5 minute meditation: 1. Find a comfortable position for the body. Perhaps lie comfortably on your back, or sit up on a cushion. 2. Let your eyes relax, and if it is comfortable, close your eyes. 3. Let your breath flow naturally, do not try to control your breath. 4. Continue to let your attention stay focused on your breath. Watch the body inhale and exhale. Watch your belly, ribs and chest move with your breath. 5. Every time you mind wanders, simply bring it back to your breath. . . . . Notice how you feel throughout the rest of your day and repeat if needed! You got this! . #mindfulness #wellness #mediation #health #instameditation #getoutside #mountainmoments #takeahike #mountains #yogainnature #blueridgemountains #blueridgeavl #visitasheivlle #onlyinasheville #breathe

Photo Credit: @wildwoodblessing These two trees always catch my attention. I imagine them as soulmates, growing old together, each comprising space between them to spread their branches, allowing the other to thrive and grow equally strong. If there had been no compromise, one likely would have lived only to bear years of harsh winter winds alone and even worse, alone to witness the most glorious sunrises over the Blue Ridge Mountains. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #godscreation #godsartwork #artofvisuals #sunrise_and_sunsets #homenc #visitnc #tnc #wnc #explorenc #exploreboone #booneview #blueridgemountains #naturephotography #nature #sunsetphotography #amateurphotography #hiking #hikingadventures #trails #ig_northcarolina #trailsyall #sunset_sunrise_beautiful #sunrise #ncout doors #southernstateco #naturenc #ncoutdoorculture #romanticasheville #treehugger #trees

Located near the center of the old business district in Whittier, North Carolina’s Swain County side of the river is the old Whittier Hotel, built during the 1880s when the town was in its infancy to serve travelers and visitors to the town, whom stopped at the railroad depot just across the street. The old hotel is the most historically significant structure left in the town, but has been left abandoned for years, with plans to renovate the building falling through multiple times. Though it appears structurally sound for the most part, owing to the longevity of the tin roof, the building has become rather dilapidated, and does need some sort of intervention. The building is one of a few remnants of the old business district that grew up around the Whittier depot during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century in the town’s heyday, when a strong economy based around a lumber mill made the town a vibrant commercial center. However, the collapse of the lumber industry during the Great Depression in the 1930s hit the town hard, and it disincorporated in 1933. Today, the town is but a shell of its former self, with the old hotel, converted to residential use during the downturn before being eventually left vacant, yet another husk of this once-vibrant, diminished, and faded pseudo-ghost town. This building, located along Whittier Depot Street at it’s intersection with Tarhelia Heights, is the former American Congregational Church and School, which used to serve the then-thriving town of Whittier, North Carolina. Located on the Swain County side of the Tuckaseigee River, the building anchors one end of the town’s original business district, which centered around a railroad depot on the Murphy Branch of the Western North Carolina Railroad, with its original steeple visible in the black and white photo at the end of this photo set. The building, constructed in the late 19th Century, originally had a steeple and was a vibrant center of activity, but, as the town waned in its fortunes, the congregation that called the building home dissolved, and the building became a private residence, with the steeple removed and a screened porch added to the front of the building. Sometime in the past couple of decades, the building became vacant, and today, it shows signs of deterioration externally, and vandalism on the interior, combined with a large amount of furnishings, personal belongings, and trash left behind either by the previous occupants or vandals. Unfortunately, though there is demand for mountain living, a lot of old buildings like this one are being left to the wayside as they are less desirable to new residents than a cabin on the steep side of a mountain, and the building, which has been unoccupied for some time, continues to decay and sit vacant, a sign of the reversal in fortunes the town experienced and one of many abandoned buildings in the town that are slowly fading, just like the memory that there ever was a thriving town here at all. 🌙 I reached out Through the stillness And planted the seed of hope That I had found buried within my soul, And now I spend my moments in movement Cultivating that seed So that one day As I wade through stillness once again I may stumble upon a field Overflowing with hope And continue on, Lips laced, With a knowing smile. #writtenbyliz . . So yesterday we met up with Drew and family for a mid-afternoon lunch at a local brewery in Nelson County, VA, and then followed them up to Wintergreen Resort on the Blue Ridge where a surprise event awaited the grandchildren. As the freezing rain began falling, and thick mist gathered, the intrepid family donned their snow gear (1) and joined the crowds for a tubing trip down the mountain (2, 3). Since we could not even see them from where we were on the lodge deck, we left for home expecting a cozy evening on Naked Mountain. But the rain intensified and even though it was 37 degrees, lightning flashed everywhere. We arrived to a darkened house: no power and no internet. Fortunately, power came back on after 2 hrs and the wonderful crew at SCS Internet Services fixed the lightning struck antennae here on NM this morning. One benefit of the horrendous weather... the morning sun set the ice-coated trees on NM afire (4). We checked in with the family... it was a wet, and for some, terrifying experience, but all is well! #familyfun #nakedmountainNAP #blueridgemountains

A victim of changing times and a new freeway interchange for US Highway 74, this old service station sits abandoned between Church Street and an off-ramp in the former town of Whittier, North Carolina. Constructed in the mid-20th Century, the station evidently started out as a Texaco, as indicated by the shape of the sign frame nearby, which later became a Phillips 66 before closing. Owned by HJ Davis, the garage served travelers along US Highway 19A between Bryson City and Dillsboro, and was one of many businesses on the Jackson County side of Whittier that sprung up around the highway, leaving the old commercial district on the Swain County side to decay and fade. The garage itself met a similar fate when, during the 1970s or 1980s, the portion of the road it faced was converted into an on-ramp and off-ramp for the new bypass Highway that passed by the town, limiting visibility and access to the business. Today, this is one of many abandoned buildings that reflect the fortunes of the once-thriving town in the 20th Century, one of decay, decline, and neglect. Whittier, NC, US

Seriously, I had to pull over at an overlook because I couldn’t see the yellow lines on the road, so to pass time until the fog thinned I decided to walk along a path to check out the Viaduct. I sat in this spot for quite awhile because I couldn’t even see the trees in this shot. Finally I was able to get a quick shot and jog back to my car to get some distance in while the fog wasn’t so thick. Fog can be a hassle to drive in, but it creates such a moodiness, it’s worth it. • • • • • • • • • • • • #godscreation #godsartwork #artofvisuals #homenc #visitnc #tnc #wnc #explorenc #exploreboone #booneview #blueridgeparkway #blueridgemountains #northcarolina #naturephotography #nature #amateurphotography #hiking #hikingadventures #trails #optoutside #foggy #blueridgemoments #southernstatecollective #naturenc #nc #outdoorculture #romanticasheville #itsamazingoutthere #ncoutdoors #moody

Sunsets are cool and all, but this time I was more excited about the person skydiving next to the gas giant at sunset. Unfortunately, I took the shot too late and the skydiver ended up blending with the dark mountains, and became difficult to see.
