So happy to be alive and well (: I’m taking a really awesome stress class this semester and we are currently learning the practice of meditation. I’ve always been aware of the benefits of it...what I didn’t realize was how HARD it can be. But ya girl is always up for a challenge 😉. Anyways, a major goal of mine for this next month is to meditate every single day even if it’s just for 5 minutes. My brain is constantly all over the place worrying about god knows what, and it truly is important to just let yourself breathe. Benefits of meditation include: - Reduced feelings of stress and anxiety - Self-regulation of thoughts and emotions - Improves sleep - Improves relationships - Changes brain physiology to slow aging ...and that is only a few of the many!! Pre-workout food and blood sugar: it’s truly unique to every person. About a year ago, I was working out on empty stomach and, within just a few minutes, I had all the symptoms of really low blood sugar. My fingers were tingling, my ears were ringing, and I saw stars everywhere. I was sweaty and nauseous, and just a few minutes later I completely passed out. It was a scary episode, but I learned a lot about my body and the importance of stable blood sugar. Fasted cardio works well for lots of people, but I need food to keep my blood sugar high enough to maintain the energy I need to work out. Now, I always have a piece of sprouted grain toast with almond butter, blueberries, and cinnamon before an early morning workout. Here’s the rationale behind it: •Grains give our bodies a boost of energy quickly because they are easily converted into glucose •Almond butter is a nice healthy fat to keep me fueled and full •Blueberries are a little sugar boost filled with antioxidants •Cinnamon actually stabilizes blood sugar I think it’s important to know how to fuel our own bodies and listen to the signs it gives us. I think I mentioned this before, but did you all know I have chickens? We have FOUR! Well, unless one turns out to be a rooster, we’re not positive yet haha. They have just started laying eggs and we’re getting between 3-4 a day! We’ve been making lots of quiches. These eggs are so much smaller than the store ones and so far we’ve had three different colors! Pink and green like in this picture and the last color is a little more beige. Ahhhh hiking in LA, nothing is better. What’s your favorite hiking trail?! For me, it’s definitely the Wonderview trail hike AKA the back way to the Hollywood sign. When I was living in Hollywood, I used to hike this trail on a weekly basis. In fact, it was on this very same hike that I came up with the idea to start my brand! Kinda cool how things come full circle. Being back on this trail years later really puts things into perspective for me. Like, look how far I’ve come - both personally and professionally!!! Breakfast for day 38! Super yummy fruit smoothie (strawberries, peaches, pineapple, and mango) with dates. Drank this super fast I couldn’t help myself 😝. Today was a great day tbh, I woke up at 4 am naturally and just decided to get a kickstart on the day. Did a lot of work and then had practice, then had an exam, lunch, second practice, lab, then now I am DONE. Haha done for the day and already did so much! I love that feeling 😊 I’m really beginning to embrace my day to day, and I hope you are trying to shape your day the way you want it to be for the most part. Here’s how it was done 😎👇🏼 . . . #WhatsInMyBowl 🥣➡️ Toasted @sietefoods Almond Flour Tortilla + Sliced Mini Peppers + Fried Quail Egg + Mashed Black Beans w/ Scallions & Lime Juice + Fried Plantains + @earthlychoice Brown Rice & Barley Medley . . ⓇⒾⒸⒺ: Boil 2 1/2c of water- add 1c @earthlychoice brown rice & barley medley, 3 sliced mushrooms, 1/2 diced red onion, & reduce heat, simmer for 35min. . This, my friends, is why for the first time in human history, there are more overweight people walking the earth than underweight. Why might this be? Well for one, our planted landmass in the United States is largely taken up by wheat, corn and soy production. We eat much of these subsidized crops, but also a lot of it is refined into oils and sugar that is then fed to cows (which also get a hefty subsidy.) . 5% of the planted landmass in the United States is dedicated to growing vegetables, which is perhaps one reason why they're relatively so expensive! 90% of Americans do not consume enough of them, according to the CDC, and may explain why the same proportion is deficient in at least one vitamin or mineral. . When you consider the research showing how one large daily salad (something I'm an advocate for and talk about in my book Genius Foods) might actually prevent brain aging, it becomes evident that society seems to want youthful, high performance brains to be a privilege of the upper class. Maybe that’s it’s way of maintaining the status quo. But I think we can change that. EGGS Aren’t these beauties pretty cool? My daughter recently asked to try both duck eggs and quail eggs when we were shopping for groceries and she noticed these on the shelf. She also said to me “You got lucky, having kids who are willing to try so many different foods”. And you know what? She is absolutely right. My kids are not picky eaters and they ARE willing to try different types of foods. They don’t always eat healthy and sometimes challenge my nutrition advice but that comes with their age I suppose 🤷‍♀️ and all a part of growing up😉 I’ll take it, I’m ok with it as long as they are willing to learn, the seeds are slowly planted 🌱 If they learn and adapt half of what I’m preaching, I know I have succeeded 💗 I hope the next generation has a better chance and learns from us, times are changing and the future of medicine is evolving. It often feels like progress is so slow but then something surprises you. Like noticing the change in an arm silhouette or the pronounced appearance of a cephalic vein through the skin. . . I constantly have to remind myself why I show up for my health. It’s not just about looking and feeling good in my skin, but about getting stronger, having more energy, being a good role model for my kids and taking care of my mental health. . . Exercise has become my time. My time to prioritise myself over others and carve out a way to love my body and all that it gives me each day. . . So, I trust the process, show up with the @sweat app, work out in the garage at 6:30am so I can still have breakfast with my family, and eat as healthfully as I can. That is how I care for myself. PART 3 is now up ✨ On starting a business & creating an inspired life. The series continues, NEW on the blog today 💓 . I still remember that first morning, waking up. Wait.. so I guess I can work all day long in my lulus and no one will ever know? I can go to a morning workout class? OMG... YES 🙋🏻‍♀️. THIS IS THE LIFE! Why didn’t I do this sooner? .
