We were talking on- HOW TO START WRITING? Today I am going to focus on a specific aspect of this. The first thing you need to remember is whatever I am saying, or whatever anyone else says on this topic, is just an advice. It is not absolutely necessary for you to follow. There is no hard and fast rule that will magically make you excellent writer. Writing is a talent! It's an art which develops over time!
Do you ever feel like you should wait for inspiration to strike? Or simply keep writing on and on, even when you don't feel like? So what do you do? And what do you think is better?
For me, both are not a good choice. Of course inspiration is needed for writing, without inspiration you would be writing gibberish. But the tricky things about 'INSPIRATION' is: you never know when or where you were find it. Most writers find their inspiration in unusually objects and at unusual times. Considering that variability factor, you can sit around waiting for inspiration. It may take too long... The option is to write, no matter what! In that way, you make writing a job. If you keep pressuring yourself to write, you don't know what the outcome would be. But I can assure that it is going to be crappy. You cannot force writing. Because if you do, your story won't be a story. It would be just a string of words that follow one another. Just that! It would lack emotions, flow, depth. You don't want your story/poem to be shallow, do you?
So, for me, neither works.
What works is a mix of both. Inspiration is necessary to add that extra charm to your writing. Write when you are inspired but don't sit around waiting for it.
Develop a writing habit. Don't hassle yourself into writing. It shouldn't feel like a job. But build a habit. What I do is, I try to write about 500 words everyday. It needn't be about you story, necessarily. It can be about anything- a word, a scene, something that happened today, anything. The point is to get accustomed to writing. Because honestly, sitting for hours in front of the computer may seem like a torture.
