A.E. Holland School⠀
Wichita Falls, Texas⠀
For a fair amount of time somewhere in the midst of, yet fast approaching my complete removal from, the state-mandated confines of the woefully inept educational system so favored in the bare-naked south during the late 80's, this burgeoning misanthrope and arbiter of delinquency of the juvenile type was consigned to the care of the A.E. Holland School for “re-education” in 1988.
Built in 1921 under the original moniker of Barwise, the school proudly served the children of white Wichitans until attempts were made toward integration of the school in 1956. As was typical of the time, the school vehemently resisted opening its doors to black children and, when eventually forced to do so by court order, the school was quickly closed siting “budget constraints”. However, within mere months, the school board miraculously found the funds which enabled them to reopen the school as an “alternative” school for “troubled” students which was re-christened the A.E. Holland School. Now all children, previously unwelcome elsewhere regardless of race, creed or color, could sojourn daily to the shared halls of the southern educational system where, lacking real educational opportunity, they would receive equal measures of state sanctioned control.
