Last weekend I had an opportunity to join huge beach clean up event. 150 people came to help to clean the beach on the small touristic island Koh Sak, near Pattaya city. We came there by boat about 1h so it’s really very close to the city especially in Ocean scales. So this island, despite the fact that it’s kinda uninhabited - hundred or thousand of tourists come only for a few hours everyday that’s it - they brings with them a lot of plastic which became trash and stay on the island for next 200-300 years. And more trash are washed up on the beaches there by the sea, from city and even other countries. The research team from Mahidol University found over 2000 pieces of trash per 1 square meter here! So this tiny island really full of trash. I was shocked how much bottles, caps, all kind of foams, fishing nets and plastic straws or another particles of trash you can find there.
We were separated by groups and each group was collected specific type of trash. I was collecting foam. And it’s crazy how many small foam pieces I found. Foam so bad for environment especially because can’t really be recycled, and it’s there- by the beautiful beach with turquoise sea, everywhere on each centimeter. We used it and trashed it but then, no one care what will happen next? If we will not start to collect it will destroy the World that we know.
