Flashback Friday to cooler days in #Arizona when it’s nice to wear a hoodie. Today was the first day that I felt a slight chill as I started out to work this morning around 330am. Hopefully the trend continues and we get to the better 9 months of our calendars. #superstitionmountains

Saguaro Cacti are native to the sonoran desert. They can grow up to 40 feet tall and can live anywhere between 100-200 years old. There are even laws in Arizona (my home 😊🏜) that make it illegal to cut down a saguaro without permission. It can lead to hefty fines and in some cases, jail time!! #nowyouknow . . . #photography #photooftheday #naturephotography #nature #desert #desertphotography #photographer #explore #exploreaz #hike #hikeaz #girlswhohike #keepitwild #lovenature #inspiration #fridaymood #friyay #az #arizona #arizonahighways #travel

Recently on our day trip to northern Arizona I met Dwayne. He saw us talking photos from this overlook and came over to see what we were seeing. We struck up a conversation and I found out he is currently homeless and lives wherever he can find shelter in the surrounding area. I didn’t want to make light of his situation but I said “at least you have a beautiful backyard!”. He chuckled and with a smile on his face said “yeah, I’m blessed in that way”. The only thing he asked me for was to take his photo. I felt bad I didn’t have anything else to offer him at the time but I was thrilled to take his photo. I wish you well my friend, maybe we’ll see each other again soon! • #aaronfilms #displaced #homeless #wanderer #peoplefirst #portraitphotography #homelessportraits #northernarizona #mogollonrim #exploreaz #peoplestories #storytellers #instagramaz #arizona #arizonasky #arizona_hiking #arizona_landscapes #arizonahighways #arizonacollective #arizonaliving #arizonalandscape #arizonaphotographer #arizonaphotography #sonyalphaportrait #sonyalphaportraits #sonya7iii

What the most unique place that you’ve stayed in on your travels? For me it’s a concrete wigwam! This is the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona along Route 66! There are only a few of these motels left in the USA and 2 are on Route 66 (the 2nd is in San Bernardino CA). They were actually the inspiration for the Cozy Cone Motel in the Disney Pixar movie ‘Cars’! Believe it or not, inside are 2 double beds and a small bathroom...I’m 5”4 and could only just fit in the shower though as it’s attached to the sloping wall! It’s a fun experience though! ——— #route66 #route66roadtrip #historicroute66 #route66arizona #wigwammotel #wigwam #roadsideamerica #roadsideattraction #roadsideamericana #roadsideattractions #smalltownusa #roadtripusa #roadtrippers #arizona 🌵 #arizonahighways #arizonaadventures #igarizona #motels #visitusa #travelusa #adventureeverywhere #exploreeverywhere #travelinglife #uniquehotels #gltlove #adventurenthusiasts

Sacred and mystical places surround #sedona , like the caves photographed here by Shannon W. @sn_dub , our tiny homes are also designed with #architecture in mind to help visitors experience #awe by using the technique of compression and expansion often used by #franklloydwright - a small door/entryway followed by 12 mile expansive views of #oakcreekcanyon The Compression/Expansion Effect “The phenomenological combination of architectural compression and expansion is an architectural effect possibly first discovered and then exploited for ritual purposes intended to elicit or model a visionary experience by prehistoric man. It has been theorized that one reason that many of the cave paintings of stone age humans were found in caves that were very difficult to access was because they were ritual and sacred spaces. This architectural device has a profound effect on the human psyche and is designed to evoke appreciation, awe, or in some instances spiritual illumination.” Julie Reichert-Marton

A flashback to our June 1960 issue with a photograph by Josef Muench. The caption reads: “Photo taken on Bright Angel Trail not far below the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. As the Bright Angel Trail switchbacks down from Grand Canyon Village, the depths of the great gorge beckon beyond and a party of mule-back riders arc off on their great adventure in the world’s biggest canyon. Fred Harvey’s mule-train excursion into the Canyon and as far as Phantom Ranch is one of the popular attractions for visitors to Grand Canyon National Park. The faithful mules have been described as ‘mules with a college education.’” #grandcanyon #arizona #nationalpark #naturalwonder #muletrain @grandcanyonnps @nationalparkservice @npcapics @goparks @parksproject @leavenotracecenter @keepnaturewild @visit_arizona #arizonahighways #travel #magazine #flashbackfriday #1960 @grand_canyon_conservancy

#FlashbackFriday to fall colors from 2 years ago at Sedona’s Oak Creek Canyon. While Flagstaff tends to get some fall colors in late September/early October, this canyon tends to get fall colors around mid to late November. So plan your Arizona fall travels accordingly! . . . . . . . . . . . #sedona #fall #hiking #arizona #fallcolors #desert #clouds #landscape #nature #photography #instagramaz #divine_deserts #arizona_landscapes #ig_arizona #arizonahiking #visitarizona #landscapephotography #hikeaz #abc15 #explorearizona #capturearizona #oakcreekcanyon #conquerarizona #arizonahighways #arizonahighways #weroamarizona #sedonahikes #arizonaphotography #lifeisgoodarizona

Up up and away. There were so many point during this climb that I questioned if we were even in Arizona. Some of the better BC skiing I’ve had. Glad to share this experience on this sacred mountain with a few good folks @forrestshearer , @sacredstoke , @navajo_in_flight 📸 @gregbalkin

A throwback to September 1968, in honor of Darwin Van Campen, one of our hall-of-fame photographers — he would have been 84 on September 10. His interest in photography was kindled by a physics class at a West Phoenix high school, where he was assigned to create a pinhole camera. After graduating from Arizona State University, he went to the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. From there, he became one of our most prolific photographers. The caption for this image reads: “This Rugged Bonita Canyon, some 25 miles northeast of Safford in the Gila Mountains, is among the most beautiful areas in Graham County. Those who would enjoy its serene splendor first hand, however, must be prepared for a wet and rough trip, because the road fords lively, little Bonita Creek over 50 times in its journey to the canyon’s least accessible places. Bonita Creek (‘bonita’ in Spanish means pretty) flows into the Gila River.” #arizonahighways #travel #magazine #throwbackthursday #1968 #tbt

I’ve lived in Arizona for nearly 6 years now and these sunsets never get old. Every night I itch to get back out onto the trails to get to a peak and watch the sunset. And I’m okay if that never changes!
