"You get a strange feeling when you're about to leave a place, like you'll not only miss the people you love but you'll miss the person you are now at this time and this place, because you'll never be this way ever again." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ @66photoexplorers @66nord_voyages_polaires #66nord #arctic #norway #visitsvalbard #svalbard #spitzbergen #spitsbergen #bns_nature #landscapephotography #nature #nature_good #adventuretime #neverstopexploring #sheexplores #beautifulexplorers #travelphotography #worldbestgram #outdoorlife #thegreatoutdoors #beautifuldestinations #longyearbyen #wilderness #natgeo #stayandwander #bestofnorway

We now have two new weather stations on our website thanks to our intrepid #FieldOps crew! They spent last week in Nome, Gambell, and Savoonga, and installed weather sites in both villages on Saint Lawrence Island. Real-time weather data from these sites is now available on our website. Link is in our bio!

Madeleine Purver defended her master‘s thesis today titled, “Understanding the occurrence and fate of microplastics in the Arctic fjords of Svalbard”. The main aim of Madeleine´s research was to gain more understanding of the fate and occurrence of micro-plastics in the surface waters of Arctic fjords in western Svalbard, this also includes investigations into the role of long-range atmospheric transport in the movement of micro-plastics to the Arctic. Samples were collected in five fjords on the island of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Three of the fjords have little traffic and visitors, the other two fjords have human settlements. Samples were taken from the mouth of the fjords as well as associated rivers using a manta net and a high-capacity pump system. Results indicate that all fjords sampled, inhabited or not, contained micro-plastics (avrg. 0.57 MP/m3), with polyethylene being the most common polymer in all fjords and 63% of all particles being fibres. The river Oxaasdalen contained the highest concentration of micro plastics of all sites, indicting the need for further research into long-range atmospheric transport. This study adds valuable new insight to rapidly growing literature indicating that man-made contaminants such as micro-plastics can be found in relatively high abundance in some of the worlds most remote regions. The thesis advisor is Dr. Pernilla Carlsson, scientist at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research and instructor at the Coastal and Marine Management master’s program. . . . . #uwestfjords #akvaplanniva #svalbard #uwestfjordsthesis2019 #womenwhoscience #womeninscience #microplastics #pollution #arcticscience #icelandstudyabroad #studyabroad #studyoverseas #arctic #arcticregion #spitsbergen #polyethylene #atmosphere #marinemanagement #masterstudy #mastersthesis #Ísafjörður #háskólalíf #háskólinn #háskóli #marinepollution #plasticpollution #microplastic

• • "He who lets the sea lull him into a sense of security is in very grave danger." — Hammond Ines 🌊 • I’m very excited about today’s @night_worms Challenge prompt- Horrors at Sea 🌬 • Some of you may already know but for the ones that don’t..... I have an OBSESSION with seafaring stories. I especially love the ones that are disastrous. Lost at sea, stranded on an island or a large pack of ice. I love the made up, fictional stories and nonfiction, based on true events, stories even more!!! 💧 • The story that lead me on this path of nautical obsession is the true story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his disastrous Antarctic Expedition of 1914-1917. The book I read was Endurance by Alfred Lansing and it had me feeling all kinds of emotions. It’s one of the best, no, it’s THE BEST non fiction book I’ve ever read. 🙌 • My obsession only continues and has even expanded. It started with Seafaring stories and has branched off to other adventurous stories of survival: Living and surviving in the wilderness. Surviving natural disasters and other near death experiences.... Fiction or non. I want to read them all. 👏 • ***QOTD- Do you have any recommendations on books of Survival? Have you ever experienced anything that had you scared for your life? 🤔 • #nightwormschallenge - Horror at sea 🌊 #maymoods19 - Guilty ⚓️ #bookreadhappyhour - what I was reading this time last year 📚 #grimdragon - Dropping Knowledge 🧠 • Thank You to those who wished me a Happy Mother’s Day. Reposted from @kenoz_ - Auroras from the center of Lake Tornetrask, completely frozen, it is incredible to see the reflections in the ice. This photo apart from those reflections that leave the ice of the green lake has on the left a shooting star and on the right the trace of an airplane, there you can clearly see the difference of which is which. . . . . #natgeo #natgeospace #yourshotphotographer #natgeoyourshot #nature #naturephotography #aurora #northernlights #northernlightsphotos #auroraborealis #skyporn #abisko #sweden #swedishlapland #lapland #arctic #photographerfocus #bbcearth #wild #nikon #nikonD850 #sigma #sigmaart #nikonistas #nightviewplanet #nightview #longexposure #longexpo #longexpoelite #auroranotify

. . . #lapland #arctic #wild #wildlife #wolf #nature #naturephotography #nikon #nikondD850 #nikonphotography #tamron #600mm #natgeo #natgeowild #yourshotphotographer #natgeoyourshot #lobo #wildmania #winter #nationalgeographic #natgeo #tundrawolf #lonelyplanet #bbcearth #fotografia #mountain #norge #norway #visitnorway

🌳DYK❓Tropical rainforests are called 'The Lungs of The Planet". They are the main source of the breathable oxygen from land source. They maintain the earth's temperature and trap millions of tonnes of carbondioxide annualy. And they are extremely crucial in fighting climate change. However, In 2018, we lost an area of tropical rainforest the size of Belgium.🌳💔💔 • • • [[Vc🎥: @worldeconomicforum ]] #rainforest #environment #wildlife #climate #deforestation #animals #wildlife #ecosystems #nature #globalwarming #climatechange #carbonfootprint #ecofriendly #arctic #climatechange #Climate #planetearth #youthstrike4climate #youthstrike #rainforests #NewDealForNature #rainforests #ClimateChangeIsReal #earth #changeclimatechange #deforestation #gogreen #saveearth #parisagreement #conservation #greennewdeal #biodiversity #savebiodiversity #saveanimals #savetrees

The frozen sea with its land-like appearance gives a false sense of security, even in sheltered bays. Beneath a thin snow layer perilously thin ice can be hidden from view. • In 2012 I headed to the east coast of #Greenland with a couple of graduating film students to make some short films. They went on to found the outdoor film company the Coldhouse Collective. Here are some of the still images I shot during our week there in the winter, on the sea ice, with the dog team of an old friend Georg Utuaq, and on a glacier. • #nofilter #travel #beautiful #adventure #instagood #picoftheday #arctic #instadaily #amazing #snow #winter #explore #wildme

Originally I had a total different idea for this but wasn’t happy with it. I changed everything except the upper body posture. Unfortunately I can’t find the ketch anymore to show you. 🤭
