The #Waitomo Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre was our last #WorldArchitectureFestival finalist for #architectureworkshop. In Barcelona in 2011, we talked in our allocated 5 mins about the moving opening by Iwi and their pride in having a new building that guaranteed the future for their mokopuna. We thought we had a compelling narrative to go with our innovative #LVL structure for Tourism Holdings Ltd in 50/50 partnership with #Maori -one of the first treaty settlements. We watched Sohnetta present their reindeer viewing cabin (stuck in a car park) and focus on analogue and digital production. The slickly curated presentation with a moose pushing up to the glass got a few laughs. You never saw the whole building in context.....That day we learnt the importance of #Theatre especially with a varied bunch of judges with their own agendas. Apparently and unofficially we were second😎 (In the #WAF innovative structure part we were pipped at the post by Gehry’s wonky New York tower engineered by Arup - our own brilliant engineer was Alistair Cattanach #DTC ) #culture #knowyouraudience #concept #authentic #brand #pitching #architecture #nzia #pacific #gotheblackcaps

#architectureworkshop fly to Amsterdam for a 10 min presentation in December! Sort of a live architectural #theatre that is not really connected with the hard slog of realising a building and not nearly as thorough as a #jury of peers visiting the #site. The best part of #WAF is visiting the other presentations. I have noticed that often you can’t tell the difference between a #render and an actual photograph of a completed project and therein lies the achilles heel of this global festival especially as they now also include #futureprojects. The best award any #architect can win is a 25 year #enduringarchitecture award. #time is the real jury.
