Today, we’re celebrating our 250th birthday by teaming up with @RIBA to showcase 250 years of British architecture. Follow us during the next months for a closer look at buildings by every architect Royal Academician and select your favourites! . Doveridge Hall by Edward Stevens (1769-70) . Despite being demolished in 1938, Doveridge Hall is one of the few known independent projects in Edward Stevens’s short career. The building was considered a conventional example of the Palladian style with its rusticated basement and pedimented façade. Palladianism was considered the height of fashion during the early 18th century, but by the time Stevens built Doveridge Hall, the trend was shifting towards a more ornamental neoclassicism, championed by Robert Adam. Stevens’s career has been overshadowed by his employer William Chamber’s and very few of drawings survive from his time in Chamber’s office. In 1774, Stevens left England for Italy, but was taken ill and died the year after, at the age of 31. . Image: Neale (1818), p1, 184; Doveridge Hall, Derbyshire. Its backdrop is a re-creation of a Miami Beach bus stop with all its signage and advertisements missing. In its midst, on the bench, is a skeleton, lying on its back, inhabiting this artificial sphere of public space. A constant trickle of water lands on its head and forms a pool below. The skeleton figure is of no particular gender or age. It serves as a representation of anyone.

This week our first U.S. project, Monroe Blocks, breaks ground! From Augustus Woodward’s plan for Detroit following the 1805 fire (first image) to the 1840’s map (middle) showing a dense urban downtown, the current city plan (3rd and last image) shows a looser urban fabric dotted with empty plots. The Monroe Blocks development will re-establish a key missing piece of downtown Detroit. #urbanplanning #urbandevelopment #monroeblocks
