BOOK REVIEW: Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson ... ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ... 5 stars
"Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done." A shocking, heartbreaking, must-read. The kind of book that makes you wonder if you should go become a lawyer.
In an account of his own career and the wider state of affairs in the US justice system, Stevenson details how literal children - 13 and 14 year olds - were routinely sentenced to life in prison in the US without parole, even in non-homicide cases. Or that entirely innocent people can be sentenced to life, or given the death penalty, especially if they're poor, black, or disabled. These people often have no legal or monetary resources to help them fight injustice. It makes you wonder have many innocent people have died in prison as a result of the American justice system. Although no system is perfect, there must surely be something better than this.
Heavy going, but worth the read, especially to make us aware of our own privilege, whether that's racial, financial, or educational (or all 3). Although the death penalty no longer exists in the UK, I'm left wondering how fucked our own justice system is. If anyone has any book recommendations in that regard, let me know. And thanks @daphmarts for the rec of this book! .
