With the schedule I maintain as a father of two teenagers, husband, and full-time teacher, nature photography frequently has to wait. I’m fine with that because the times I do manage to get out help to provide balance in my life.
When I have a choice of day with one being cruddy weather and the other being sunny skies, I opt for crud. Lots of reasons, actually, but first among them is the potential great color. Other benefits include less bugs, less people, more interesting skies, less contrast, less blown out highlights, a potentially long photo shoot, and the technical challenge of staying warm and dry.
These Autumn covered hills are a good example of what you can run into. That day was intermittent downpours with light but steady rain in between. The Sun always comes out on the way home, which it politely did. But only after I was thoroughly soaked. This was shot at around 200 mm at f9 for about 1/16s. On magnification the crispness falls of dramatically because it was shot through several hundred yards of rainfall. I did the best I could in the conditions so it is what it is. Its hard to ask the camera to see more than what your eyes can see. Or to break the laws of physics, light scatters when moving through rain. Little fine detail was visible, but the shapes and textures and gradations of light and color came through. I am good with that, after all its what attracted me to the scene to begin with.
Get out an explore even when the weather is working against you. By all means be safe, but embrace the crud and you may be better for it!
