Fitness isn't about running a long distance or completing an hours training session. Fitness is the ability to be on the move constantly, completing lots of daily tasks, and then, at the end of the day, when you're all tired out, to go again,to have the energy stores to be able to react to another physically demanding situation. A lot of people think that they need to "workout" for an hour a day to remain healthy, but this is simply not true. Whilst it is beneficial to workout for an hour or do half hour hiit training, you can't just leave it there, you can't just spend the rest of the day sitting down binging on Netflix, humans are designed to move constantly and if we don't, the negative effects if this make your hour of running or weight lifting pretty much pointless. Therefore I have decided that on Saturdays, which has become our visiting day, I'll just run between the stops as none are more than 5k away, this will give me around an hours rest time before going again. Today I ran my very first Cross Country 5k! I have done 5ks, I have done OCRs, I have never done Cross country before! I actually really enjoyed the difficulty of the run, and I placed 4th in my age group ( my age group overall is the most competitive regardless of the sport 🙃)with my run time of 28 minutes through pouring rain! I was happy to be invited by a newer friend of mine @marleyjoytype1 , and enjoy not only a fun and different race, but a wonder chat with coffee and a breakfast 🍳 bagel 🥯 at Mill 72!(Highly recommend their Caramel Macchiato!) ☕️ I’m beyond happy about this outcome and new friendships made, because it really made me appreciate the progress overall made in different trainings I have partaken in. I’m very proud of this because it was a lot of really pushing myself, especially in the sense of I was full blown just running today, no obstacles today! ✨💥

NUTRITION As some of you know I am currently studying to become a nutritional advisor. One of the areas I am very interested in is nutrition and sports performance. Yesterday I went on this run and completed a respectable time and distance considering I didn't set out for pace. However, the night before, England played football and I went to the pub, now I didn't get wasted but I enjoyed a few pints. Follow that with cheesy chips from a takeaway at half 10 and then 5 and a half hours sleep and you haven't created the ideal scenario. However, by the time I went for my run the alcohol should have left my system and the chips should have been digested. I still felt like death the whole way round, I couldn't get my breathing right, my pace was all over the place and I was really struggling. At one point, I had to walk 100 meters of the run up a particularly step hill because I just couldn't get my body to function correctly. I suppose what I'm getting at is that although sometimes we can eat and drink poorly and think by the time we need to do something useful we will be ok, however, it isn't always the case, the last things you consume become your fuel and that can be the day after. Conclusion - no more week drinking for me, I will drink once a month before my recovery day if it's a special occasion. POSTURE No I haven't got a foot fetish!! So what do feet have to do with posture ? When someone says posture normally people envisage somebody with a rounded back or constant slump, head too far forward. With this in mind, people will begin to work back muscles and core in am attempt to straighten their spine. However, whilst this is good and will help........ Looking at the feet can be the best place to start. Modern lifestyles have people wearing trainers and shoes that constrict the proper growth of the feet and begin to deform the foot's natural shape. Furthermore, the high heels (including mens trainers) don't allow for our ankles and associated tendons to express their full range of motion, hence the muscles become tighter and weaker. Trainers especially promote incorrect walking pattern due to the way your lower body has to compensate. Over time this constant misuse can lead to poor ankle mobility, weakness and tightness in the calves. The bigger problem is that when this happens, the body begins to compensate by changing walking and running gait and shifting the alignment of the body when moving. This can cause knee issues which are never a good thing !! Further up the chain the head of the pelvis can be pulled forward creating an over extension in the lower back, HELLO BACK PAIN. So from poor feet being encased in bad footwear, you can manifest a whole host of posture issues and injuries. The solution, I don't expect everyone to go dumping all high heels and trainers. What I'm suggesting is that when possible walk bare foot. The whole time while you are at home or in the garden and pea tice resting squat. Begin with accumulating 5 minutes a day by setting a timer on your phone. If you want to go all out, go look at @vivobarefoot or @vibram and spend your days barefoot. Recovery run day. Did some hard leg work yesterday plus teaching yoga so the legs were not up for a hard run today. Rather than have a day off and do nothing, I decided to go on a recovery run which is at a slower pace than your normal run. However, just because the pace is slower, don't think that you aren't getting as much benefit as when you run fast. You will spend longer In the fat burning zone as your body uses fat stores for fuel. You will also increase your base mileage by training your slow twitch muscles which are responsible for endurance. Barefoot running vs normal running trainers Brief background - wearing purely barefoot shoes or being completely barefoot for around 6 months Running barefoot or barefoot shoes for around 4 weeks twice a week consistently I have picked up a little overuse injury in my calf whilst adapting to a new running style necessary with barefoot. So this evening I put back on the trainers as a way to try and take some of the running forces generated through the body. Below is what I found CONS My trainers are now too tight and don't fit properly. I thought this was just a claim people made but my feet have grown a little length ways but more so width ways I felt no Connection to the ground and actually felt unstable, especially across the uneven surface of a field It was far too easy to slip into bad posture with head forward and heel strikes I didn't feel my muscles were engaging as much as it was very easy to get into the trudging pattern a lot of runners can fall into PROS didn't have to worry so much about cow shit or stepping on something sharp Run felt easier on the muscles CONCLUSION Keep going barefoot because the benefits to posture and correct natural running style are obvious ! Another barefoot running post. After my last update of hitting the 5k barrier whilst barefoot I went out today with confidence my newly used muscles could handle a greater intensity. Managed to shave 4 mins of my last time and will look to improve again next time I'm out as my body adapts to a new running style. Today's barefoot trot took me mainly through fields. I wanted to go for endurance today rather than speed so slowed my pace down a little to try and accumulate time. 33 mins later I hit the magical 5km Mark totally barefoot. This takes my training to the next level as I know physically I can do the distance whilst barefoot. Few weeks at this distance and then I'll up the distance even more. It was an entertaining sight to behold as our students at EtonHouse Vanda displayed creativity and brilliant motor skills when they were tasked to imitate the movements of animals. FINALLY got to take part in the #bewl15 race 2019 after deferring last year due to injury. The weather conditions were perfect, the company was wonderfully purple, the marshals out on the course were FANTASTIC, plenty of water, jelly babies, wet sponges and most of all brilliant fun energy 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 see you next year for sure!!!
