I'm in San Diego this week photographing a school. I spent a whole day going into every nook and cranny, capturing the students and their culture, from pre-schoolers eating paint to seniors learning about covalent bonds. We ended the shoot on their rooftop photographing the football team practicing punt returns.
Throughout the day, I couldn’t help but compare their school with the one I went to (it doesn’t really compare at all). Whenever I say, “I went to public school,” it’s either an excuse for a mistake, or a pat on the shoulder for how well I ended up despite it all. It’s one of those mixed bags where there were moments I definitely could’ve done without, but I know I was given opportunities that many students don’t receive.
Standing there on that roof, I realized how lucky the students are to get the education they are getting. And whatever I had done to have the opportunity to fly out here and be able to tell their story, I'm sure there are teachers I should thank.
