“I don’t eat meat—only fish.”
Fish are living, breathing, sentient beings, just like cows, pigs, and chickens. The only difference is that they reside in a different environment, but this does not mean they are lesser than us or than land-dwelling animals.
There are estimated 34,000 species of fish, which makes them the most diverse group of vertebrates on the planet. And whilst they may not feel pain in the same manner as other animals, when a fish is pulled from water, it will gasp for air and flail around desperately. This is a sign of a being in great distress, which is no wonder when they have a hook piercing their skin and cannot breathe.
In some countries, fish farms now practice “humane” slaughter methods. Instead of suffocating fish in air, freezing them to death in ice water, or poisoning them with carbon dioxide, they use a quick blow to the head or a strong electrical current to knock them unconscious before piercing their brains or letting them bleed out.
Do ANY of those options really sound “humane”?
It’s been said many times over, but we will say it again: There is no humane way to kill a being who does not want to die. It’s really as simple as that.
If you’re pescatarian for ethical reasons, please take note of the above and consider your actions.
We will be vocal for ALL animals.
