Yesterday I was at an elementary school addressing a student that was giving his teacher a hard time. As I’m speaking with him, I learned he wants to play basketball and be a Chaney Cowboy. I told him, not listening in school is not the Cowboy Way.
The student then proceeded to ask me, What does it take to be a Cowboy/What does it take to be a basketball player at Chaney?
#1 - ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, all Cowboys must maintain a 2.5 GPA, NOT the state minimum of 1.0.
#2 - RESPECT, for yourself, your teachers, coaches, teammates, parents. (Not in any specific order)
#3 - COMMITMENT, to yourself, the team, the process... putting in the off season workouts. Showing up and putting the work in.
#4 - ACCOUNTABILITY, be accountable for you, make no excuses. Own up to your mistakes, and learn from them.
#5 - PRIDE, be proud to be a Cowboy, take pride in yourself and know, on and off the Court, in and out of the classroom you represent the Cowboys. What you do, your actions, good or bad will reflect on what it means to be a Chaney Cowboy.
#6 - SELFLESSNESS, help those that need it, in your classroom, in your community, on the Court. Ask, what can I do to help?
#7 - COACHABLE, Listen and Learn
#8 - EFFORT AND ATTITUDE, keep a positive attitude and outlook. Show up everyday ready to work. IT TAKES ZERO TALENT TO HUSTLE.
#9 - CONFIDENT, Be confident, not arrogant. Confidence comes from preparation. Preparation is knowing you did the work to get better. The more work you put in on a task, the more confident you will be
#10 - SPORTSMANSHIP, Is when an individual walks off the Court and you can’t tell if they have won or lost, because he carries himself with PRIDE either way
These #10 variables provide a firm foundation in doing things the COWBOY WAY and being a part of the Chaney Boys Basketball Team.
