Had an interesting conversation with someone earlier in the week about photography and the state of the industry. We disagreed on a lot of things. My fundamental point was that photography is less of an industry in and of itself right now and more than ever, it doesn’t seem to be a standalone product that most people would do well with if they are just starting out.
For me, it’s more of a complementary addition to the things I already do. “Multimedia” is the term I refer to most. For example, I have licensed this image many times but I’ve never actually sold it and I never will. It’s not even a fantastic image. It’s just *my* image. I enjoy helping people and I’m happy to see my work in many other places (preferably not stolen), most of which will never see the light of IG.
Of course it would be entirely possible to make a good living out of doing that, but then I’d miss out on all of the other wonderful experiences life has to offer. Hey, if it works for you, run with it. If not, always remember that you are the sum of your experiences. If you’re struggling, it might be better to leverage some of your other experiences, combining them with your love of imagery. Richer. Fuller. Life.
What say you? Tell it like it is.
